Is it the last round-up for Old School?
Posted: Sep 4th 2009 By: mikeiles
The Old School Express are the most popular tag team in MWA. They are 3-time Southern Tag Team Champions. But the one title that keeps eluding them is the MWA Tag Team Titles. After losing to Tag Team Champions Texas, Inc. in Pryor on July 11th, they can't receive a title match for the MWA Tag Team Titles for 90 days. Or can they?
OSE rode into Spavinaw on August 7th knowing they could not vie for the Tag Team Titles. But they had something to say. They called out MWA Director of Operations Raymon Downey. Jason Jones began by saying an unknown masked man interfered in the Steel Cage Match in Pryor causing OSE to lose to Texas, Inc. Jones pleaded his case to Downey who agreed, but unfortunately said the contract was airtight and there was no way to lift the moratorium on their title matches. Then the strains of "Sirius" by the Alan Parsons Project filled the gymnasium and out strolled The Jet Setters.
Handsome Jack Legacy & Darling Dustin Heritage began mocking OSE over their loss in Pryor and bragging about how they earned a future title shot with their win over El Matadors at the same show. Downey then had an idea. Since Legacy was dressed for competition with no match scheduled, and Jones was dressed for competition with no match scheduled, he put them in a match facing each other. He also said no matter the outcome of their singles match, OSE would face The Jet Setters at the September 11th show and The Jet Setters guaranteed tag team title match would be on the line.
Legacy came to the ring with Heritage in tow, and Jones had Boulder in his corner as well. Both partners became involved in the match as well. The end came when Heritage hit Jones with the Legacy's Coastal Commonwealth National Wrestling Title and Legacy pinned Jones.
As mentioned, the outcome of the singles match is of little consequence. OSE still face The Jet Setters at the September 11th show with an MWA Tag Team Title Match on the line. As an added twist, The Jet Setters defeated OSE for the Southern Tag Team Titles at the Mid-States Wrestling show in Harrison, Arkansas on August 22nd in a Hair vs. Titles Match. The titles changed hands by DQ due to a pre-match stipulation and although The Jet Setters won, Legacy still had his head shaved by OSE. So who really holds the psychological edge going into their match on September 11th?
Other News & Notes from the August 7th show:
AWOL made his MWA debut taking on the young powerhouse Lars Manderson, who had MWA Heavyweight Champion "Mr. Saturday Night" Michael Barry in his corner. Manderson and AWOL were matched power for power, but in the end Manderson pulled out the victory.
Ever since the advent of the MAX-Division Title, MWA fans have been wowed by the exploits of the MAX-Division wrestlers. The first champion El Super Colibri survived the Ladder Match to capture the title then fended off Damien Morte in his first title defense. In August, he faced one of his closest friends and allies in "The Broken Arrow Bad Boy" Justin Lee. Both men pulled out all the stops but Lee won the title in the end. Colibri suffered a concussion but missed no ring time and Lee was seen limping out of the gym at the end of the night.
El Matadors defeated MWA Tag Team Champions Texas, Inc. by DQ. Yes, you read that right. But it was a bizarre ending to the match. In a surprise move by DOO Raymon Downey, Jake Boulder was named special guest referee of the match. The end came when Boulder's tag team partner Jason Jones came to the ring and pushed one of the Matadors which prompted Boulder to call for the bell and award El Matadors the win by DQ. OSE and Texas, Inc. then brawled in the ring.
Brandon Groom made his return to MWA and faced Shane Morbid. The two men know each other rather well and Groom was wanting to redeem himself to the MWA fans after losing to Michael Barry in his MWA debut in April. It was another power vs. power matchup but Groom defeated "Mr. Endurance" in the end.
The main event brought us MWA Heavyweight Champion "Mr. Saturday Night" Michael Barry defending the title against The Canadian Red Devil. Barry is one of the most successful wrestlers in Oklahoma and CRD is better than most wrestlers on the circuit. This match did not disappoint either, but after a Saturday Night Special, Barry disposed of his opponent from The Great White North.
Friday, September 11th is MWA's 1st anniversary event. As mentioned earlier, The Old School Express takes on Southern Tag Team Champions The Jet Setters with a guaranteed MWA Tag Team Title Match haning in the balance. Plus, a "Bash for the Cash" Battle Royal will be held with the winner receiving $5000. You will not want to miss this show.
