A Hardcore Mistake?
Posted: Apr 30th 2009 By: CMBurnham
Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Mick Foley, a beloved wreslter who has wrestled for many organizations over the years, including WCW, ECW, and WWE, has achieved great success, that many in the industry only dream of. After three "WWE Championships," one "Harcore Championship," and eight "World Tag Team Championships" in the WWE, Mick Foley gracefully retired from the ring in 2000, in what seemed at the time, to be the end of a great career. However, things aren't always as they seem. For the next course of eight years, Foley would make occasional appearances in the WWE, even wrestling from time to time. His role usually saw "The Hardcore Icon" putting over other WWE superstars. After a stint as a WWE commentator, Foley parted ways with the WWE midway through 2008, after disagreements with Vince McMahon, and signed with Total Non-Stop Action. With Foley at TNA's side,Mick brought a ton of wrestling knowledge, that could benefit the young promotion. At "Lockdown" this past April, Mick Foley, or rather, his alter-ego, "Cactus Jack," captured the "TNA World Championship," and at that very moment, it was clear for everyone to see........Mick Foley had become what so many before him had become, another wrestling legend refusing to progress with the times. The majority of wrestling fans today will not have a remembrance of Foley's great career. With the wrestling audience constantly changing, most fans from the "Attitude Era," and before that time period, are gone. Most fans will remember Foley, for his occasional appearances, and matches in the WWE, as mentioned earlier. With Foley losing more times than not, it's highly doubtful that todays wrestling fan will view Mick as a credible champion. With that being said, how bad does this look for TNA??? Here's a guy, who over the last ten years has done very little in the wrestling business, only to go to TNA, and then all of a sudden, is "World Champion" material. It seems to be a "Hardcore Mistake" on TNA's part, as even thinking about putting their main title on Foley is laughable at this point in his career. Looking at Foley nowadays, it's disappointing to see just what he has become. Instead of helping put over the young TNA talent, Foley is the centerpiece of TNA, as long as he has their "World Title." Foley's legacy is hurting each day, and the longer Foley stays on top, the worse it will become. It would have been best for Mick to have just retired from the wrestling business after leaving the WWE last year, instead of embarrassing himself, and his legacy, parading around as a so called "World Champion." Like it, or not, Foley is the epitomy of what Chris Jericho talks about, when it comes to legends in the wrestling business. Not all wrestling legends refuse to let go of their glory days, but can anyone deny that Foley is trying to relive yesteryear??? TNAcontinues to fumble, keeping their "World Title" on wrestlers such as Foley. A change is needed in order to compete with the WWE, or one day, guys like Angle, Sting, and Foley will retire, and TNA will have very little to fall back on. Their ratings will slip, and the company will ultimately fail. Foley can still be beneficial to TNA, specifically in creating stars, but as of this writing, Foley is detrimental to the company, and is another example of just how, the mighty have fallen.
