Albright Wins First Title

Sorry, my computer froze up, so here's the finished version. As I was saying, the MWA started the new year off on a positive note. Not only did the wrestlers put on a great show, but the crowd was again bigger than the previous show. With the Spavinaw School Gym nearly at capacity, history was made with the first-ever, triple threat bullrope match, along with some other great matches.

"Mr. Endurance" Sugar Shane Morbid v."Big Country" Jake Boulder

Morbid came out to a warmer reception than he has been used to in the past. This match continued the fued between the Old School Express and Morbid's former team, the Gentlemen Thugs. Both men fought hard, and it looked like Morbid might be able to get the victory when Boulder injured his knee. However, his former partner, Cast-Iron Cothern attacked him from behind, forcing the referee to disqualify Jake Boulder and give the victory to Shane Morbid. Afterwards, Cothern berated Morbid and announced that a new Gentlemen Thug would be announced later.

Winner by DQ: "Mr. Endurance" Sugar Shane Morbid

El Matador Uno v. Bernard Funk (w/"Big" Stevie Caballero)

The debuting El Matador Uno didn't get the best welcoming party in the business. The newly reunited Texas, Inc. came to the ring with one thing on their minds...trouble. Funk proved to be the tough opponent we've come to recognize, but his mean streak has been reborn since he rejoined his nephew, "Terrific" Tim Rockwell. El Matador Uno got the victory after the newly announced Director of Operations, Raymon Downey had the referee reverse the decision. Also, El Matador Uno got a spike piledriver for his efforts. However, Mr. Downey made sure that the Texas, Inc. party was short lived as he had Bernard Funk arrested and taken out of the building in an attempt to prohibit him from interfering in the main event.

Winner: El Matador Uno (referee reversed decision)

"Space Cowboy" Jason Jones v. Cast-Iron Cothern

On his way to the ring, Cothern revealed that the new Gentlemen Thug was none other than the "Arabian Sensation" X-Cal. Jones was not the least bit intimidated, though. He came to the ring and collided with Cothern in a manner that reminded me of two rhinos ramming each other. Although X-Cal was at ringside, Jones was able to get the victory.

Winner: "Space Cowboy" Jason Jones

Southern States Tag-Team Championship Match:
The Jet-Setters ("Handsome" Jack Legacy & "Darling" Dustin Heritage) v. Compound Varsity (Canadian Red Devil & "Broken Arrow Bad Boy" Justin Lee)

After the December MWA show, the Jet Setters traveled to the MWA's affiliate promotion, Mid-States Wrestling, in Harrison, AR and defeated the Old School Express to win the Southern States tag-team titles. Needless to say, it only added fuel to their brash and arrogant fire. Contrary to what was going through their minds, the Compound Varsity had the ability to defeat the champions. However, the Jet Setters were able to overcome the duo of Devil and Lee to retain their coveted titles.

Winners: The Jet-Setters ("Handsome" Jack Legacy & "Darling" Dustin Heritage)

El Super Colibri v. "Arabian Sensation" X-Cal

Anyone who saw their match in December knew this one was going to be another classic. X-Cal, who came to the ring looking like he was ready for a street fight, tried to turn the match into that very thing. As the match progressed, however, both men turned to what they know best...high flying. It looked as if X-Cal was going to get another victory over the luchadore from Coweta when he went for the shooting star press, but Colibri was able to move, hit the 9-1-8, nail the frog splash, and the victory. Afterwards, Cothern came to the ring and attacked Colibri, followed by Morbid, who was out for a little retribution. To settle the dispute, Mr. Downey announced that in February, Colibri and Morbid will face X-Cal and Cothern. The losers will be suspended from action for 90 days.

Winner: El Super Colibri

Triple Threat Bullrope match for the MWA Heavyweight Title:
Blake Albright v. Max McGuirk v. "Terrific" Tim Rockwell (w/"Big" Stevie Caballero)

The odds were stacked against Rockwell, as they are against any champion in a triple-threat match. He also came to the ring without the security of his uncle, Bernard Funk, who was arrested earlier in the evening. In addition, Caballero signed a contract, which I have in my possession, that stated that Rockwell would not get a rematch in the event of a loss. McGuirk and Albright were both ready to get their hands on the champion after being cheated out of the title at the December show. Albright was able to cash in his opportunity and become the new MWA Heavyweight champion, his first title in his young career. After words, I wanted to scream like good ol' J.R. after Stone Cold won a big match, except I wanted to say "Albright wins! Albright wins! Albright wins!" Now, the real challenge begins...keeping the title. It may be tough with the talented MWA roster.

Winner and new MWA Heavyweight Champion: Blake Albright

Well, those of you that were unable to attend missed a great show. A new champion was crowned, and the MWA kicked off the new year in grand style...well, that's my two cents worth anyway.

Until next time,
J.W. McGillicutty
