Why Is Everybody Always Pickin' On Rico?

Why Is Everybody Always Pickin' On Rico?

Posted: Nov 5th 2008 By: CMBurnham

Rico Suave does not have "superstar" written on his forehead. His win/loss record is pathetic, with 35 losses this year and only 4 wins. His ring attire would embarass most backyard wrestlers. But each week, he comes out and does what he loves the best: he wrestles.

All Rico wants is a little respect. A few wins would be nice too. But the respect issue is the biggest thing to him. After all, this is the guy who worked very hard to overcome the label of "Mr. Poopypants" that was given to him by Rocco Valentino. The fans laughed and chanted then, but they've pretty much put that in the past now.

As detailed in a previous article. Rico has had his share of issues with his former Hall of Famers stablemate The Greatest Bolo. But Rico's problems didn't stop there. In addition to the masked menace from Guatemala, Rico also has to contend with the pairing of Michael York and Brett Taylor.

If anyone can understand the desire for respect that Rico has, it's York. But unlike Rico, who worked hard in the ring to try and earn the fans' respect, York turned his back on the fans and allied himself with ComPro newcomer Brett Taylor to try and take the easy way to the top. So far, it hasn't worked.

Rico & York's most recent issues began on October 18, when the duo paired off in a lengthy match. Both men used everything they knew to try and gain a win, but thanks to some well-timed interference, York was able to pull a victory out, surprising even himself a little.

The outside interference didn't sit well with Rico and he made his feelings known the very next week. As York was facing off against Kobra Kai, Rico came out and attacked Brett Taylor, who was at ringside with York. Rico ended up breaking Brett's crutch (for his injured ankle) over Brett's back and causing enough of a distraction for Kai to wrap up "The Enigmatic One" for the pin.

Obviously, York was seething for revenge and he had his opportunity as he faced Rico in a singles match this past Saturday. York came out to the ring as usual, but Rico limped his way out on the bent crutch that had belonged to Brett. This brought waves of laughter from the audience as Rico mocked York's new associate, then threw the crutch to the side and made his attack. The matchup was even for the first couple of minutes, but towards the end, York had obviouslly been hit in the head a couple of times as awareness of where he was and what he was doing was being interfered with. Rico once again scored the win after a couple of misexecuted moves from York. And then, just to make sure the message was sent, Rico threw his crutch into the ring, nearly hitting York in the head with ht.

The point had been made. Rico had beaten York and deserved some respect for that. York was so upset that he took the crutch and slammed it on the mat, causing part of it to shatter and rendering it completely useles. Now that he's addressed issues with the Greatest Bolo and York, perhaps it's time for Rico to move on to something more impressive. Or perhaps he could just hope for two wins in a row over the next couple of months. Whatever the outcome, Rico will be there, preparing to once agian slay the dragon of underachievement he's raised in ComPro
