Edge Suffers Worst Week Of His Professional Career During Oklahoma Tour
Posted: Jul 5th 2008 By: CMBurnham
When Edge crossed the Oklahoma state line Monday, he was the WWE Smackdown World Champion, he was engaged to Smackdown General manager Vickie Guerrero and he felt like he was on top of the world.
Funny how 48 hours can changed everything.
Edge had managed to escape Dallas, TX and the Night of Champions PPV with his title intact, after facing the challenge of Batista. And when he and his "Edgeheads", Kurt Hawkins and Zach Ryder, interrupted Jim Ross' farewell address to the RAW crowd, the arrogance oozed off of him. Edge entered the ring, berated the Hall of Fame announcer and "encouraged" Ross to leave, accompanied by Hawkins and Ryder, while "The Rated R Superstar" addressed the Oklahoma City fans in the Ford Centre.
Edge pointed out to the fans that there were some things missing from RAW. They were missing a general manager (since William Regal had been forced to leave the WWE after losing a match to Mr. Kennedy.) They were missing the Undertaker (forced to retire after losing a match to Edge). And most importantly, they were missing a World Championship. With Triple H drafted to Smackdown and Edge keeping his title away from Batista, both titles were on the other show. Edge proclaimed that no RAW superstar was going to be allowed to challenge for his title. They could negotiate something with Triple H, but, unless it was a draft show and he was legally required to be there, Edge vowed never to appear on RAW again.
Amidst the boos from the crowd, Edge left the ring and went back up the ramp, but just then, Batista's music hit and "The Animal" emerged from the back. He chased Edge back to the ring area and for the next couple of minutes, what can only be described as the most one-sided assault in recent wrestling memory occurred, as Batista took all his aggression out on the champion. Using the announce table, the ring steps and anything else he could come across, Batista beat the champion, then threw him into the ring, delivered a powerful Batista Bomb and stood superior over the fallen Superstar.
With his frustration vented, Batista left the ring and the fans felt mixed emotions. They knew that Batista had gained a measure of revenge, but having been drafted to RAW, Batista would never get a shot at the title again. And even after the beating he suffered, Edge was still in possession of the belt. But then, to everyone's surprise, C. M. Punk's music hit and Punk, accompanied by a referee, came running to the ring. Punk handed his Money In The Bank briefcase over to the referee and Lillian Garcia announced to the crowd that Punk was cashing in his title opportunity. A World Title match was now in progress and, after the bell was rung, Punk hoisted the dazed Edge up for the G. T. S. After delivering the finisher, Punk covered Edge and 3 seconds later, RAW once again had a World Title.
Edge was seen much later during the RAW broadcast berating Hawkins and Ryder, asking where they had been and why they didn't help him. He put the total blame for his title loss on them.
That was bad enough, but it only got worse from there. When Edge arrived at Smackdown in Tulsa on Tuesday, he was still in a foul mood and it was as clear as the look on his face that noone should disturb him. Vickie Guerrero had punished Hawkins and Ryder by forcing them to compete against Jesse & Festus and after the "Edgeheads" lost the match, Edge made his appearance in the Tulsa Convention Centre, running down the ramp and spearing the trance-like Festus. While Hawkins & Ryder held Jesse, Edge assaulted Festus with a chair, knocking him unconscious.
Edge left the ring area and went back to Vickie Guerrero's office. He was still seething about the World title loss, but Vickie said it was OK because she had set up a match at the Great American Bash where Edge would challenge WWE Smackdown World Champion Triple H. She then made the comment that what happened on Monday was stupid because she never gave Edge permission to go to RAW. Edge flipped out at this comment, saying that after 16 years in the business, Vickie had no idea what he went through and the kind of torture he put his body through. Vickie reminded him that because of her association with the WWE, her spine was permanently damaged and she would require a wheelchair for the rest of her life.
Edge left and went out to talk to Hawkins and Ryder, but after a while, Vickie sent an assistant to get him. When he went to her office, the tension between the two was extremely thick and more hurtful exchanges were made, including Edge reminding her that she wouldn't even have a job if it weren't for him. She'd just be Teddy Long's lapdog. In his mind, that makes him the real General Manager of Smackdown. A shouting match followed and Vickie ordered Edge out of her office in disgust. Edge left angrily, but after a brief moment, turned and headed back to the office, looking like he might want to make amends. That wasn't possible, because Vickie had locked the door and refused to allow him in.
With nowhere else to turn, Edge headed to the ring to address the crowd. He said he had been the victim of two cowardly attacks, one by Batista and one by C. M. Punk. These cost him "his" title and that never should have happened. In his mind, it just wasn't fair. There was a little solace for him, as he believed he wouldn't be without gold for long, since he had the upcoming title match with Triple H.
Edge admitted to everyone present that this had been the worst week of his life and that he felt disrespect from the moment he walked into the arena that day. He had received no support from Hawkins & Ryder, who he had taken from nothing. They did nothing, the fans did nothing and most distressingly, his fiance Vickie Guerrero did nothing. He stood "a man alone", but that was OK by him. He knew some dirty secrets about Vickie and seemed about to share some of those until Vickie came out to the top of the ramp. She couldn't understand why he was doing all this. She knows he lost the title, but wondered if he had lost his mind as well. Falling silent, Edge exited the ring, walked up the ramp to his fiance and stated that he had one more public announcement before leaving. He then shocked everyone by telling Vickie the wedding was off. As Vickie threw a tantrum at the top of the ramp, Edge calmly went backstage.
The night wasn't quite over for the "Rated R Superstar". Vickie had already signed a bonus main event for the fans present at the taping. The Big Show and WWE Smackdown World Champion Triple H were set to take on Edge and ECW World Champion Mark Henry. Big Show and Triple H came out first to a torrent of cheers. Henry emerged to a loud chorus of boos. But when Edge appeared, he wasn't even dressed to compete. And he made no attempt to do anything more than stand on the ring apron while "The World's Strongest Man" did all the work for his team. Triple H and Big Show lost no opportunity in making fun of Edge, with Show calling him a crybaby and imitating him while Triple H wiped the "tears" from his eyes. After a few minutes of action, Henry went to make a tag to Edge, but Edge dropped down off the apron and walked to the back, not even caring. Triple H went on to deliver a Pedigree to the ECW Champion and score the win for his team.
Edge and several other associates were seen after the show at the Hooters in Tulsa and Edge seemed to be enjoying himself and the company of the waitresses. But no matter who he surrounded himself with there, he couldn't escape the FACT that he was going home alone. No belt. No fiance. And if he could have had one wish, it would have been that the events of June 30 and July 1 be completely erased from the history books.
