Jim Ross Interview Recap From KATT 100.5 In OKC

Posted: May 16th 2008 By: CMBurnham

The interviewers, one of whom is a big wrestling fan, were Rick and Brad. J. R. was promoting the live RAW event coming up in Oklahoma City in June. J. R. said the main event was going to be John Cena vs. HHH. He noted that those two don't like each other in real life. He explained that there are only so many spots at the top and they had a legit rivalry over that. Sounded more like friendly competition but he did say they weren't fans of each others. He noted that Shawn Micheals is "still the best out there" and said he was like a band that plays 10 songs really well rather than 20 songs OK, comparing him to younger talent.

He talked about how Micheals used to be "a turd" and that he "knows he's the best". But did say he was a better guy know. J. R. also noted that guys listening to the Katt (younger males) "hate Cena's ass". J. R. mentioned that that was the crowd that loves Jeff Hardy and even said Hardy had just come back from his "drug suspension". That surprised me because I don't know how many listeners actually knew that. Certainly not the interviewers. He brought up how successful Hardy's return to Raw was last Monday.

J. R. also discussed the rivalry between Santino Marella and Roddy Piper, saying they were going to do a series of segments with each other on Jimmy Kimmel live. Sounded like a throwback to Lawler and Kaufman and J. R. even said they take a little from the past.

Talk turned to Stone Cold Steve Austin. The hosts stated that no one is nearly as popular as "Stone Cold and the Rock" and J. R. said something like "I don't know anyone will ever reach that level of popularity". He said he'd like to see Austin do something big at Wrestlemania but indicated that Austin is not really impressed with the writing crews ideas for him and that he knows that character and it takes a lot to get him motivated to actually appear on the show. Rick and Brad were suggesting that Austin do announcing or have some sort of role and J. R. sounded like he only wanted something if it was going to work for him. J. R. talked about the ridiculous Austin numbers in Merch, noting he sold more than even Hulk Hogan which I think surprised the hosts of the show. He mentioned a quarterly merchandise check "north of 1 million" and that he made 13 million one year.

On the Rock, J. R. said he really is done and that Hollywood basically doesn't want Rock near wrestling, noting a cover of Men's Health which said "the Rock is dead". J. R. mentioned that Hollywood's view of wrestling fans is off base and that his movies should be promoted on Raw and Smackdown due to the audience it draws.

On Hulk Hogan, J. R. was asked how real the reality show was and said "not real, kind of like wrestling". Here it really became clear that J. R. doesn't like Hogan. He talked about how Hogan didn't want to be shown in a negative light but that they would occasionally film stuff where Hogan was legitimately "having a urination contest" with his wife. J. R. talked about how Hogan wearing his bandana in court was an indication that he was "in character". J. R. even made the comparison to his cowboy hat saying that McMahon thinks all oklahomans wear cowboy hats and drive covered wagons.

He talked about Hogan complaining about a $250,000 paycheck for Summerslam making the comment about his limo driver getting paid better. J. R. said he confronted Hogan on it and Hogan said "it's not the money, I have more money than God". J. R. noted he was going to need it after all the recent problems he's had. Finally, when talk turned to Brooke Hogan and her new show J. R. said "they need to muzzle that girl" saying she "wasn't the valedictorian of her class". J. R. clearly had some negative feelings on Hogan and seemed to think his encouraging his son to race cars was insane. Also indicated that he felt Brook having her own show was just trying to live off of Hogan's success but that if they let her go the show would be entertaining just because you never know what will come out of her mouth.

Lastly J. R. plugged his restaurant and blog. He said his blog is "uintentionally controversial".
