No Happy Celebration Of Cinco De Mayo For Martinez
Posted: May 8th 2008 By: CMBurnham
When Ray Martinez broke into the wrestling business in 2003, one of the people who helped him was current ComPro Champion Romero Contreras. Ray was a ring announcer and commissioner for TPW and Romero was soon to be one of TPW's biggest stars. That relationship lasted for about 2 years. Then Ray left for SRPW and Romero continued on in TPW. In late 2007, Ray invaded ComPro and brought a completely new side to himself for the fans to see. Gone was the easy-going, friendly ring announcer and in his place was a vile, loudmouth, racist bigot who wanted nothing more than for all non-Mexican wrestlers to be removed from the roster. And the first person he got in the face of upon his return was...Romero Contreras.
The problem here, of course, is that Romero is Mexican. He may not look like it, but he is. Even Ray will acknowledge that Romero is of Mexican decent, but he considers Romero to be too "whitewashed" to have any right to claim his heritage. So Romero became part of the target for Ray's faction, La M.
La M has seen better times for itself. They were on top of the tag team division until they lost the belts to current ComPro Tag Team Champions New Canada. In the process, they also lost a member, as El Choppo suffered a severe back injury and was unable to return to ComPro for the forseeable future. This put Ray in a bad position: either find a replacement or take the position himself. And his first choice was the latter, a mistake on his part as he, Jesus Rodriguez & Anthony Jackson were on the losing end of a massive 6-man tag team battle against Contreras, Brian Lakewood & Edison High School coach Wade Weller during a benefit show for the Edison Wrestling Club. This was Ray's only in-ring venture this year and, being unsuccessful, Ray took it upon himself to seek out a replacement for Choppo so he could focus on being outside.
That replacement came in the form of a man known as El Castigador. Very little is known about this masked man, especially since he has yet to step in the ring. But he made his presence known this week during Jesus' match against Cold Blooded Chris. Normally, this would have been a 2-on-1 match (for practical purposes), but with the addition of Castigador, it became 3-on-1 and C. B. C. could not match those odds. Rodriguez picked up a vitally important win and Martinez saw an opportunity to promote his agenda with a little post-match promo.
Last week, Martinez decided to blame Romero Contreras for the tag team title loss (a match that Romero was special referee during). This week, Ray wanted to give a history lesson to the fans, so he informed them about the origins of the Cinco de Mayo celebration, all the while calling them derogatory names. During this speech, Romero came out and began to distribute pictures of Martinez. At least, that's what they appeared to be at first glance. Closer inspection revealed that they were actually pictures of other people (in one case, former Presidential candidate John Kerry) with Ray's face crudely copied and pasted on top. Writing on these pages declared that "Ray is White", something Ray has adamantly denied since coming to ComPro. Romero went all around the ring distributing these pictures, while Martinez taunted him and goaded him into the ring. As the "Ray is White" chants grew louder and louder, Romero decided to enter the ring and confront the "XXX-ican", but Romero's entrance equalled La M's exit as all members vacated the ring. Romero then showed how little respect he had for Martinez by taking a helium-filled baloon of the Mexican flag and using it as a piece of toilet paper! These actions drove Ray and his compatriots nuts and he left the arena vowing to humiliate Romero in some way.
What might Martinez have up his sleeve? Nothing is known about the in-ring abilities of El Castigador. When will he wrestle? And, since Ray was able to fill the absence of El Choppo so quickly, might there be other future members of La M waiting in the back to be revealed? So far, Romero has been able to fight this war alone and while he has had success against 3-man factions by himself in the past (such as the Hall of Famers), things might be different this time. Now that he's champion, Romero must remember that he has a constant target on his back and anyone who wants that belt need only find a way to make an alliance with La M to have a huge amount of backup behind them.b
