Dark Side of the Ring review: ‘Paul Orndorff: Saving Mr. Wonderful’
Posted: Aug 13th 2026 By: Jeff Moss
The latest episode of Dark Side of the Ring focuses on ‘Mr. Wonderful’ Paul Orndorff, a superstar of the 1980’s and instrumental figure in the success of WrestleMania and the WWF/E.
Regarded as a genuine tough guy in wrestling, Orndorff came from the humblest of beginnings and learned to channel his anger into his in-ring performance. His cocky, self-absorbed gimmick led to him being one of the top heels of the 1980’s.
Orndorff struggled with the immense workload of wrestling and self-medicated, but by most accounts was one of the best guys in the locker room and determined to be a success. His son, Travis tells most of Orndorff’s story and unlike a lot of Dark Side episodes, it’s not as tragic as it might seem at first glance.
The Players:
Travis Orndorff – Son of Paul Orndorff
B. Brian Blair – Friend and colleague of Paul Orndorff
Jim Cornette – Wrestling manager and historian
Arn Anderson – Wrestler, Enforcer and friend of Paul Orndorff
Gerald Briscoe – Wrestler and friend of Paul Orndorff
“Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff – Appears through archival interviews
The Physique, The Talent, The Draw
The episode traces Orndorff’s transition from living in poverty “in a fixed up chicken coop” to a standout college football star at the University of Tampa. Orndorff’s big break in wrestling arrived when he joined WWF/E in the early 1980s, instantly establishing himself as an elite main-event talent.
Blessed with a sculpted physique, incredible conditioning, and a devastating piledriver finisher, he earned the nickname “Mr. Wonderful.” His combination of physical intensity and legitimate athletic credibility quickly made him a cornerstone of the company’s aggressive expansion into mainstream pop culture.
The defining peak of Orndorff’s career came during the inaugural WrestleMania in 1985, where he teamed with Roddy Piper to face Hulk Hogan and Mr. T in the main event. The episode highlights how the success of WrestleMania hinged in part on Orndorff’s role as a heat-generating antagonist.
Following a subsequent betrayal of Hogan, their feud drew record-breaking sellout crowds at arenas across the country, including an astounding 60,000-plus fans at the Toronto Exhibition Stadium.
Things Start Catching Up
Despite achieving financial success and fame, the immense physical toll of Orndorff’s high-impact style began to catch up with him during the height of his feud with Hogan. Orndorff suffered a severe neck injury during a weightlifting session, resulting in nerve damage that caused his right arm to visibly atrophy. Fearing he would lose his top-tier spot and massive paychecks, he dangerously delayed necessary surgery and relied on sheer willpower and intense pain management to keep performing.
Orndorff self-medicated like a lot of his colleagues, but he didn’t seem to let it get away from him too badly. However, the decision to push through debilitating pain had permanent consequences on his body and long-term health. The severe muscle loss in his right arm forced him into an early temporary retirement from the WWF in the late 1980s. Though he later returned to the ring for WCW in the 1990s, his physical limitations were obvious, and he increasingly struggled to accept that his body was giving out on him.
Life After Wrestling
After finally hanging up his boots for good, Orndorff tried his hands at a few different businesses, including owning a bowling alley. He was also scammed out of his life savings by one of his closest business partners.
Orndorff later transitioned into a role as a trainer at the WCW Power Plant, attempting to instill his ferocious work ethic into the next generation. However, adjusting to life away from the spotlight proved to be a difficult transition for a man whose identity was entirely bound to his physical perfection. He struggled deeply with the loss of the crowd’s roar and the reality of his post-wrestling life.
In his later years, the physical damage from decades of ring trauma accumulated into severe health crises, including a battle with cancer and progressive dementia linked to repetitive head trauma. The episode explores how likely chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) symptoms began to erode his memory, mood, and sharp cognitive function. His family recalls the heartbreak of watching a once-indomitable, powerhouse athlete gradually lose his independence to a disease he could not fight off.
Paul Orndorff passed away in July 2021 at the age of 71, leaving behind a legacy defined by both extraordinary achievements and immense personal sacrifice. The episode emphasizes that while his “Mr. Wonderful” persona was built on supreme confidence, his real-life story was marked by the tragic cost of sacrificing one’s body for the wrestling business. Former colleagues reflect on his fierce passion for the craft and the tragic reality that the sport rarely offers soft landings for its greatest warriors.
Final Thoughts
This is an episode on Dark Side of The Ring that is definitely worth watching. Not just because it’s about a huge star of wrestling’s biggest boom period, but because it’s at heart a story about a man who did everything he could to succeed for his family.
Oftentimes, these Dark Side of The Ring episodes reveal that the stars we know and loved dealt with personal demons that the general public wasn’t aware of. Orndorff’s story is a little different in that his real demons seem to be his own perception of perfection and drive to reach it, highlighted by his insistence that he work through his nerve damage.
It’s also worth noting that Travis Orndorff has nothing but positive things to say about his father, before and after wrestling. Often, we learn that wrestlers are not great family men in spite of any desire they might have to be so. The wrestling world just swallows them up. Orndorff genuinely worked for his family and Travis very much appreciates that.
Ultimately, this episode ends up being something of a tribute instead of a tabloid tragedy. Orndorff was one of the most captivating performers of wrestling’s golden era and the episode shares his triumphs alongside his painful final years, ensuring that Paul Orndorff is remembered not just as a character, but as a complex man who gave everything to his art.
