Romero Sends AWOL Packing; Looks For Jackson At Night Of Champions

Romero Sends AWOL Packing; Looks For Jackson At Night Of Champions

Posted: Feb 26th 2008 By: CMBurnham

The unexpected betrayal of AWOL while serving as special referee during a ComPro Title match between Champion Anthony Jackson and FCW Tag Team Champion Romero Contreras completely can be declared a complete failure. Romero was more than happy to take a minor beating on the way to forcing AWOL out of ComPro, possibly forever.

AWOL's partnership in the Hall of Famers had yielded some short term success for the last member of the Casualties of War. He had gained some tag team success with Jackson and was certainly the most physically imposing member of the faction. It seemed as if he would be the roadblock that anyone would have to get through in order to get to Jackson and the ComPro Title. Jackson's antics didn't change any. He still made frequent sneak attacks, especially against Romero. And the humiliation he suffered at being pinned by Romero when he disguised himself as SI-X was still stinging this past Saturday.

ComPro commissioner Kitty announced that ComPro Tag Team Champion Jesus Rodriguez would be competing against Romero in the opening match of the card. Romero toyed briefly with the member of La M before putting him away. Then, the Hall of Famers attacked and Kitty had had enough. She demanded that there would be consequences and she was the one to put them in place. As a result of the attack, combined with the betrayal from several weeks ago, Kitty ordered a No DQ/Loser Leaves Town match between Romero and AWOL. And to make sure that the match would be fair, she declared that if Jackson attempted to interfere in any way, he would be stripped of his ComPro Title. This news infuriated the champion, but Romero was more than happy to put his local career on the line in order to gain some revenge against AWOL.

When it came time for the match, both men came in with their power game ready. And AWOL certainly made the biggest impression during the match, suplexing Romero through the ringside table. The simple FACT that he could pick up the 300+ pound competitor is astonishing enough, but putting him through the table was the icing on the cake. Or so he thought. Because miraculously Romero recovered from that and rallied to gain the pin. After Romero locked AWOL up in the traingle choke and forced him to tap out, there was no mystery as to the outcome, as the entire crowd broke out in a chorus of "Na Na Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye!".

AWOL's career in Tulsa began in 1998 as a member of the Casulaties of War. He represented that faction through 3 federations. He then joined New Canada and won both singles and tag team gold. A motorcycle injury towards the end of 2007 put him out of action for the remainder of that year, but he returned a little over a month ago and most fans expected to see the muscleman from Ft. Bening GA rise to the top of ComPro again. That won't be the case. Although no time stipulation was announced when the match was made, Oklafan has been informed that AWOL will be ineligible to compete in ComPro for at least 1 year.

This is the second Loser-Leaves-Town match that Romero Contreras has won in his career. On March 26, 2004, he defeated Rick Styles to gain a bit of revenge for his Latin Apostles teammate Deuce Rodriguez, who earlier had lost a Loser-Leaves-Town match to Styles.

With AWOL out of the picture and victories over the Greatest Bolo and Rico Suave, it seems that nothing stands in the way of Romero winning the ComPro Title when he next faces Jackson in the ring. ComPro will present its 5th Night of Champions this Saturday. No opponent for Jackson has been announced as of press time, but with Kitty just as upset at Jackson and his associates as Romero was, it seems like Romero may get that last chance to grab the brass ring when March begins.
