NEWS
For Goldberg’s last match on July 12th, it was like the old days of WCW for his entrance. Former WCW Director of Security Doug Dellinger knocked on Goldberg’s locker room door and Goldberg’s entourage for his final walk to the curtain included his son Gage, WWE Hall of Famer Dallas Page, former WCW star Ernest “The Cat” Miller, Chuck Zito, and Josh Barnett. Also in attendance for “Saturday Night’s Main Event” were WWE Hall of Famers The Steiner Brothers (Rick Steiner & Scott Steiner). WWE Hall of Famer Jesse “The Body” Ventura was also there but did not work the show on commentary.
For the weekend of July 11-13, Google searches in the U.S for Bill Goldberg reached over 50,000.
Appearing on “The Ariel Helwani Show”, Bill Goldberg wasn’t all too thrilled about his retirement match on Saturday Night’s Main Event but he was very appreciative that it happened. Goldberg said that he would have preferred if this was on a premium live event rather than a television show due to time and wasn’t happy that they cut him off 20 seconds after he got a microphone in his hand after the match. He revealed the idea of a retirement match started in November of last year but was not confirmed until after the start of the year, with the time, place, and opponent always being Gunther on a “Saturday Night’s Main Event” in Atlanta, GA. “To be given that opportunity on such a special show with the lineage of the show, to be able to go against the World Heavyweight Champion, to be able to go against Gunther, I mean, again, it was an honor and a privilege to be given that opportunity and I had to make the most of it,” Goldberg said. But Goldberg said that he has two more weeks before he can talk more openly about what happened. “I have 2 weeks before I can really spill the beans and make my feelings kind of known about the entire rundown, from the inception of the idea to its delivery,” he continued, adding that it was “a little less than to be desired,” but he was not in a position to complain because not many people get that opportunity.
Charles Robinson was chosen to referee the Goldberg vs. Gunther match on “Saturday Night’s Main Event” because he was the referee for the match in which Goldberg defeated Hollywood Hogan for the WCW World Title at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA on “WCW Monday Nitro” on July 6, 1998. Robinson suffered a cracked rib during the match after he was inadvertently speared by Goldberg. Robinson uploaded an x-ray scan of his chest in a post on Instagram, showing one cracked rib. “Thanks @goldberg95,” Robinson wrote. “Never fear…I am ALL MAN and I can’t be kept down!” Robinson also said that he will return to “SmackDown” next week in San Antonio, TX to continue his duties as a referee, although going down for a pinfall count might hurt a little bit more this time around.
AEW offered Goldberg a retirement run of matches. Fightful reported, “I knew for months that this was going to be Goldberg’s retirement match weekend. We had reported that. They really should have given him more time for a proper speech, but honestly, that wasn’t their priority. What they did care about was scheduling it on the same weekend as AEW’s biggest show. That was the focus—putting it head-to-head with AEW’s biggest show. And for what it’s worth, AEW had actually offered Goldberg a legitimate retirement run.”
Goldberg revealed that WWE offered his son Gage an NIL deal but he declined it on behalf of his son. He said “They tried to give him an NIL but when I found out how much they were going to give him, I put the brakes on that one. But they would be ignorant if they didn’t have an idea that it could be in his future.” Gage Goldberg is starting his Sophomore season as an Inside Linebacker wearing #55 for the University of Colorado. He is 6’ 0” and 210 pounds and played both football and baseball at Samuel V. Champion High School in Boerne, TX before enrolling at Colorado.
Among those in attendance at the “Evolution” premium live event in Atlanta, GA on July 13th were WWE Hall of Famers Jacqueline, Torrie Wilson, Alundra Blayze, Molly Holly, Ivory, and Mark Henry, former WWF Women’s Champion Leilani Kai, former WWE Women’s Champions Jazz and Melina, former WWE Divas Champion Maryse, and Vickie Guerrero.
Leilani Kai posted on Facebook “There aren’t words to describe what I felt that night at Evolution. I was sitting in the crowd when I looked up and realized-my very first official piece of merchandise was now available at WWE Shop. After 50 years in the business, is the very first time I’ve had official merchandise”. Click here to see the Leilani Kai shirt that is now available.
Recent additions to the WWE Vault include Mankind vs. Steve Austin vs. Triple H with Jesse Ventura as the special referee from “SummerSlam 1999”, a three-hour Rick Rude compilation, and a never before released match from the Poffo collection from March 24, 1985, where Randy Savage wrestled Jerry Lawler in Cape Girardeau, MO.
Michael Hayes remembered his Fabulous Freebirds partner Terry Gordy on the 24th anniversary of his death: “It’s hard to believe it’s been 24 years since Terry passed away! Think about you and miss you every day. Thank you Bam!!”
A tweet posted by TNA President Carlos Silva this week has led to speculation that he’s teasing an A. J. Styles appearance for the “Slammiversary” pay-per-view event on July 20th in Elmont, NY. In the tweet, Silva used the word “phenomenal” and capitalized it: “We’re moving the stage back to accommodate more fans. This event will be TNA’s greatest achievement and trust me it’s going to be PHENOMENAL. #Slammiversary #TNA @ThisIsTNA”. Later in the week, the company confirmed that Styles will appear at “Slammiversary”.
Sting and Wardlow were backstage at AEW’s “All In Texas” pay-per-view on July 12th in Arlington, TX.

Jeff Jarrett talked about WWE counterprogramming AEW’s “Forbidden Door” with NXT’s “Heatwave” on his podcast "My World with Jeff Jarrett" "’Forbidden Door’ is AEW, CMLL, and New Japan. I’m just...broad strokes. So it’s three promotions, and the card’s going to be off the charts. The O2 is going to be rocking. I’m just not real sure the bullets in the gun that NXT is going to have. But I’m going to say they’re going to have some… But why do that to #NXT?...Because there’s no doubt that ‘Forbidden Door’ will blow ‘Heatwave’ out of the water. And look, when you put a fast-food chicken restaurant, we’ve talked about this. There’s Raising Cane’s, there’s Slim Chickens, and Chick-fil-A in my hometown in Hendersonville going up right across the street, three side by side by side. We’re not selling chicken here, but I don’t know, Conrad. As the challenger brand, it feels like that TKO is giving us an opportunity to knock one clean out of the park again."
Under the L Productions has a documentary on Wisconsin based independent wrestler and promoter Dave Herro, as well as his son Kal Herro, Al Snow, and Braun Strowman. The film debuted in May and was a finalist for the “Remember the Future World Film Festival” in Canada, a selection for both the “Toronto International Hollywood Film Festival” and the “Left-off Global Network New York Film Festival”.
Bill & Justin Neeley are doing a book called Touchdowns and Turnbuckles about eight WWE Hall of Famers who played college football at West Texas State University (now West Texas A&M). The book covers Dory Funk, Jr., Terry Funk, Stan Hansen, Bruiser Brody, Dusty Rhodes, Merced Solis (Tito Santana), Tully Blanchard, and Ted DiBiase.
Gary Roosevelt Gram was recently crowned the inaugural Chest Chop Champion. He survived a tournament that consisted of Johnny Dynamite, Cannonball Matthews, and Johnny Lightning, among others.
Oklafan congratulates Jay Hazzard for surpassing 6 months as EPW Internet Television Champion. He defeated Anarchy [2nd] for the title on January 18, 2025 at an event in Oklahoma City.
