Whatever Happened To: Edcar Thomas?

Today on the blog, Rob Faint looks at the underwhelming pro career of Edcar ‘Boo’ Thomas from the 1980’s. A wrestler who seemingly had the backing of some top wrestlers and promoter from the Mid South territory and then suddenly disappeared.
In the mid to late eighties the wrestling magazine the Wrestler had a column that introduced new talent to the fans. The July issue brings us Edcar “Boo” Thomas, a wrestler from the Mid-South region.
In 1985 Edcar, from Norman, OK, started out as an amateur wrestler and a 2-time Toughman competition winner. His college teammate, “Dr.Death” Steve Williams took him on as his protégé and he began wrestling in the Mid-South area. He defeated future superstars Shawn Michaels and Tom Prichard. He eventually moved to the Central States territory and fought Harley Race, Rufus R Jones, and Rocky Johnson. With his amateur background and toughman skills why didn’t Edcar make more of an impact?
In researching Edcar the common thread I found is that he failed to connect to the fans. Teaming with Dr. Death did not move the needle and soon he found himself moved down the card. I read (but could not verify) that during a match he was running the ropes during an important part of a match and fell to the floor. This and a few other mishaps put him in Bill Watts’ doghouse. He later moved to the Missouri/Kansas area for Harley Race. After only wrestling 63 matches he appeared to have left the business.
Many feel that while Edcar had great amateur skills they didn’t translate to the pros. He didn’t grasp all the nuances, nor could he connect with the crowd. Edcar now resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he has worked for years as a beer distributor.
