Romero Promises to Dethrone the King of Hardcore
Posted: Dec 21st 2007 By: CMBurnham
Since winning the 2007 Oklahoma Stampede and earning a shot at the ComPro Title, FCW Tag Team Champion Romero Contreras has had to endure one obstacle after another in his pursuit of that championship and its current owner Anthony Jackson. On December 15, Jackson found himself up against a wall. He had to defend his title against Contreras and that was the last thing he wanted to do, especially with his Hall of Famers stablemates banned from ringside.
Romero, having been the subject of many 3-on-1 attacks in the weeks leading up to the match, walked into the ring confident that he would leave the building as the champion. But Jackson was unwilling to simply enter and compete in a fair match. He spent most of the 20-minute conflict trying to leave the ring area and get counted out, knowing that would preserve his title. Eventually, referee Tommy 3 Count grew tired of these shenanigans and said that if Jackson didn't enter the ring and compete, he would count him out AND award the title to Contreras. This forced Jackson to enter the ring, where he quickly got himself disqualified with a low blow to Contreras. While Contreras automatically won the match, this denied him the title and ComPro commissioner Kitty knew this was the case. She entered the ring and announced that on December 29, she was ordering a rematch for the ComPro Title between Contreras and Jackson. But Jackson, who has a thorough understanding of the rules having served as the OPW commissioner several years ago, brought up the FACT that champions are only required to defend their titles once every 30 days and, since he had just completed a title defence, he had 30 days before he could be forced to do so again. Kitty reluctantly agreed that she did not have the ability to change the rules, but then said the match between Contreras and Jackson was still on! And while it wouldn't be for the title, it would be a match that Jackson was very familiary with: Fans Bring the Weapons!!
Contreras immediately became excited with this announcement and promised that he would use any weapon the fans brought and hit Jackson in the face with it. Jackson, on the other hand, with irate, protesting that this was unfair and retreating to the safety of the dressing room and Romero celebrated and continued to plot Jackson's demise on December 29.
While Romero will certainly have fan support entering this match, it's impossible to overlook the experience advantage that Jackson walks into this match with. Jackson competed in the first 3 Fans Bring the Weapons Matches documented in the state of Oklahoma and was victorious in all 3. He's defeated the likes of Butch Dalton, Dexter Hardaway and Great Bolo 2nd on those matches. Romero, on the other hand, is a complete newcomer to this form of match. But Romero does have the fans on his side, which puts him in the situation that Jackson was in for all of his victories in previous years. Obviously, it's not possible to use the weapons if the fans won't give them to you and given Jackson's relationship with the fans at this point, it seems unlikely that he will have any support or any foreign objects that he doesn't smuggle in himself.
So, while Contreras can't win the title on this night, he can make Jackson suffer and bleed copiously. And that is all it will take to make a great (if slightly belated) Christmas present for Romero and the ComPro fans.
