Does Shane Morbid Possess the X Factor?
Posted: Nov 13th 2007 By: CMBurnham
On October 27, 2007, ComPro fans witnessed one of the most brutal matches in the federation's history as FCW Tag Team Champion Justin Lee challenged Shane Morbid for the ComPro Oklahoma X Division Title in a Broken Arrow Street Fight. Only one other Broken Arrow Street Fight had occurred in Oklahoma history, that one in TPW between Lee and Tim Rockwell (then known as Timmy J). As in the first match, Lee came out victorious and began his second reign as Oklahoma X Division Champion.
But while the match cost Morbid the title, it also unknowingly cost Justin as well. Justin was not at the show the following week and when he arrived this past Saturday, he was walking gingerly and not dressed to compete. After stepping in the ring, Justin informed the crowd that he had suffered some internal injuries in the area of his left arm and shoulder during that match. He said he never wanted to be known as the biggest guy in wrestling or the most technical, but simply as the guy who gave 100% in the ring every time. Unfortunately, with this serious infection that had taken over his left arm, doctors said it would be at least a month before he regained full use of that limb. He knows that there are champions in the state who defend their titles against "jokes" or "a bunch of guys in masks", but if he can't defend at 100%, then it's time to name a new champion. Justin then took the belt and handed it to ComPro commissioner Kitty, ending his 2nd Oklahoma X Division Title reign at 2 weeks. The fans were certainly not happy about this and erupted into a huge chant of "Keep the belt!", but Justin told them that if he did that, he'd be a hypocrite. Justin then took his leave of the ring area.
But the ring wasn't empty long as "Gentleman Thug" Shane Morbid arrived and began to brag about how he took out Justin Lee. He tipped his hat to himself and then demanded that Kitty hand the X Division Title back to him. Kitty asked that Shane "stop being stupid for about 5 seconds" and told Shane that he could enter into the tournament that she had put together for next week to crown a new Oklahoma X Division Champion.
ComPro recently posted the brackets for this tournament on their website and they pose some interesting pairings. For the first time ever, ComPro Tag Team Champions Sudden Impact will face off against each other. Also, the only 2 men with X Division Title experience will face off in the first round as Shane Morbid will be across the ring from former SRPW X Division Champion Bernard Funk. And 2 talents will make their in-ring debuts as Tim Rockwell will face off against Blake Albright, the younger brother of Brent Albright and cousin of Rocco Valentino and El Super Colibri will face the challenge of the Greatest Bolo.
On paper, it certainly appears that Morbid is a huge favourite in this match. He's held X Division gold in 3 different federations and if he can get past Bernard Funk, he'll be the most experienced wrestler in the tournament. But Morbid's focus may be divided. In recent weeks, he and Cold Blooded Chris have made their desire to challenge for the Tag Team titles understood and Morbid and Chris used the cover of a "Body Slam Challenge" to bring out the masked champions and attempt to weaken one of them in a 2-on-1 attack. Morbid ended up being the one who was injured as Sudden Impact applied a double Single-leg Boston Crab and stretched the hamstring of Morbid's right leg. He was still feeling the pain from this when he competed later in a Triple Threat match against Tim Rockwell and Luc Lapointe, a match that Rockwell won, even though at one point Morbid had him pinned for a 4-count. Morbid will have to ignore all the distractions around him if he expects to win 3 matches against increasingly more difficult opponents. But Morbid has shown he has the "X" factor before and it's possible he may bring that factor into play again during this tournament.
