Lawler to attend Andy Kaufman documentary premiere

Lawler to attend Andy Kaufman documentary premiere

Posted: Nov 2nd 2007 By: mikeiles

A few years before Andy Kaufman's death from lung cancer at 35 in 1984, the darkly edgy comic/performance artist leaped into pro wrestling, grappling with women in particular (he declared himself "Inter-Gender Wrestling Champion") and feuding with (male) wrestling star Jerry Lawler. On Tuesday, the American Cinematheque jumps into the ring with a Kaufman wrestling double bill. Lynne Margulies and Joe Orr's 1989 documentary "I'm From Hollywood" chronicles the escapades that many think hurt his career, while 1979's "Andy Kaufman Plays Carnegie Hall" shows his mind-boggling range, including Foreign Man, the lovable character that launched his career. Bonus: Lawler and the Aztec Mummy ("the world's oldest living wrestler") will attend. 7:30 p.m. Tue., Egyptian Theatre, $10, (323) 466-3456, AmericanCinematheque.com
