The Scoop

NEWS
WWE had a surprise for longtime fans Sunday night, as Carlito made his return to the company by competing in the Royal Rumble. The surprise entrant didn’t win the big match, but like it has for people in the past, it has opened up new opportunities for him. PWInsider has reported Carlito is getting a tryout for a producer role. Carlito revealed to the WWE YouTube channel that he was blown away by the reception online to his return, and now it’s a chance that it could lead to great things for him. It’s worth noting that last year, MVP was put in a similar position and has now become one of the red brand’s top stars and arguable the MVP of 2020 for the show. It might just be a wonderful indication of things to come with the man who is cool.

Carlito, the former World Tag Team, United States, and Intercontinental Champion, wrestled on "WWE Monday Night RAW" just 24 hours after making a surprise return at the Royal Rumble. This was the first time in almost 10 years that Carlito wrestled on any WWE show. Ever since he left WWE, Carlito mainly wrestled for World Wrestling Council in Puerto Rico and independent promotions. On Raw, the 41 year -old teamed up with Jeff Hardy to take on the team of Elias & Jaxson Ryker. Hardy and Carlito got the win with Hardy pinning Elias. At the Rumble, Carlito, with his ever present apple, came in at #8 and was the fifth one eliminated from the match, lasting 8 minutes and 26 seconds. “Well…that took only 10+ years,” Carlito wrote on Twitter after his Rumble appearance. Carlito was advertised for the RAW Legends Night early last month but he never showed up at the event.

Rumor has it that Carlito could be signing with the WWE very soon and could be teaming with Riddle and Jeff Hardy as a faction on RAW.

Steve Austin, Bianca Belair, Carlito, Torrie Wilson, and Indianapolis Colts linebacker Darius Leonard were guests on Wednesday’s episode of "The Bump".

WWE might not call up every NXT Superstar to RAW or SmackDown, but some are destined to be seen on the main roster. Karrion Kross is one of them. The company has been watching carefully the work of the former NXT Champion and people have high expectations for him. On "Wrestling Observer Radio", Dave Meltzer talked about Kross’ situation and revealed he’s being “groomed” for a main roster run, while others may never leave NXT right now. “Karrion Kross is being groomed for the main roster. Roderick Strong, who can work rings around Karrion Kross, might never be on the main roster. It’s just how it is. They can’t wait to get Karrion Kross on the main roster. He has to get through whatever he’s getting through [in NXT] to get him there, but he’s on the fast track for that.” They did point out Kross’ injury last year slowed down the process, but he’s still being fast tracked to get a call up. There’s plenty of time between now and then it seems, but Kross is on his way to the main roster. We just have to see how he’s booked once he gets there.

Steve Austin's "Broken Skull Sessions" will welcome SmackDown Women's Champion Sasha Banks on the next episode that will air sometime this month. Banks has already taped the episode at Austin's place in Los Angeles and she becomes the second female on the show following Bayley who was last month's guest. Apart from a new episode of "Broken Skull Sessions", the WWE Network will also have new episodes of "WWE Untold", "The Day Of", and "WWE 24" this month. The APA, the popular tag team of Ron Simmons and JBL, will be the subject of "WWE Untold" while a look at the 2021 Royal Rumble will be featured on "The Day Of". Also, "WWE 24" will cover Big E, who has been split from The New Day to embark on a solo career. A new, untitled documentary on Goldberg is also on the way and the "WWE Icons" series this month will feature Beth Phoenix. Speaking of "WWE Icons", the documentary on Yokozuna is a fantastic look at the life of the former WWE Champion, giving fans a behind-the-scenes, never seen before glimpse on the man behind the gimmick.

The Bouncers (The Beer City Bruiser & Brawler Milonas) have re-signed with Ring of Honor.

One of the most legendary stories about Hulk Hogan dates back to 1983. The Iron Sheik has told this story on multiple occasions, that Verne Gagne offered Sheik $100,000 to shoot on Hogan to injure his legs while both were in the AWA. It’s been repeated by Sheik and others so often that it’s become part of the lore of Hulk Hogan and one of the main points in the real life heat between Hogan and Sheik. Well, it turns out that might not have any basis in reality. Greg Gagne, son of Verne, spoke to Sportskeeda’s "UnSKripted" podcast and debunked this story, calling it fabricated. Greg thinks Sheik has told the story so often that he believes it, but his father Verne never once put a bounty on Hulk Hogan’s knees. “No. Sheik made that thing up. A couple of months ago, my brother and I, he said, ‘You gotta watch this thing on YouTube.’ I never knew he said it. So when he [my brother] had told me, I said, ‘That was never said. Verne never did that.' Iron Sheik, he trained with us and Verne got him started, Verne supported him through the Olympics and everything. He was so naïve to the sport, he wasn’t catching on. My mom gave him the name The Iron Sheik, and then the Iranian thing was going on. Vince [McMahon] wanted somebody and Verne sent him up there [to WWE].” Sheik’s big gimmick these days stems to just how much he actually hates Hulk Hogan. It’s often shown in how much he tweets, and while there might be doubt in the validity of his story, he probably will just continue to call Hulk Hogan a jabroni and threaten to humble him.

The Bushwackers talked to Wrestling Inc about reuniting for one more run which you can watch by clicking here.

Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of “Hacksaw” Butch Reed, who passed away from heart complications on February 5th. He was 66 years old. Reed, whose real name was Bruce Reed and who competed early in his career under that name. He played college football and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M before transferring to the University of Central Missouri and also played professional football for the Kansas City Chiefs before training to be a pro wrestler. Debuting in 1978, he competed mostly in the St Louis, Florida, and Georgia territories, primarily as a tag team competitor. By 1983, he had made his way to MSW, where he engaged in one of the more defining feuds of his career against the Junkyard Dog. He also adopted the nickname “Hacksaw” at this point and engaged in a battle of the Hacksaws against “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan. On July 16, 1983, Reed defeated Junkyard Dog for the MSW North American Title. He appeared to lose it to Magnum T. A. on October 12, 1983, but there were extenuating circumstances. Reed had allowed the fans to pick between T. A., JYD, and Krusher Khruschev for his next title defense. The fans picked JYD, but Reed ignored them, saying JYD and Khruschev didn’t deserve to have a title match and defended against T. A instead. That same night, Reed teamed with Jim Neidhart to defeat Magnum T. A. & Jim Duggan for the MSW Mid-South Tag Team Titles. Reed would have the North American Title given back to him on October 24, 1983 when the MSW Board of Directors determined that the title match against T. A was not official. He only held the title two days, losing it to Junkyard Dog on October 26, 1983. He and Neidhart held the Tag Team Titles until December 25, 1983, when they lost a Steel Cage/Title - vs - Mask Match to Mr. Wrestling II and Magnum T. A. Neidhart and Reed then split and engaged in a brief feud. Reed remained a top heel in MSW until the unexpected departure of Junkyard Dog. Shortly after that, Reed’s partner, Buddy Landel, turned on him, turning Reed babyface. Reed would evetually defeat Dutch Mantel for the MSW Television Title and then on October 14, 1985 defeated Dick Murdoch for his last reign as North American Champion. He could not hold both titles, so he vacated the Television Title and remained North American Champion until January 1, 1986 when he lost that belt to Dick Slater. At this point, Reed left MSW and after a brief return to the Central States territory, he entered the WWF, changed his nickname to “The Natural”, dyed his hair blonde and was managed by Slick, who he had partnered with in Central States. Reed spent two years in the WWF, feuding with stars such as Tito Santana and Koko B. Ware, but it was a feud with Ricky Steamboat that remains the source of a persistent myth even today. According to the story, Reed was supposed to win the WWF Intercontinental Title, but no-showed the TV tapings where that was to occur and the belt instead went to the Honky Tonk Man. Initially, Reed said this was untrue and video from HTM’s title victory over Steamboat shows Reed there celebrating as well. But in a shoot interview in 2018, Reed recanted that and confirmed he did lose the opportunity to become IC Champion because he was burned out and no-showed the events. Reed would end up being hyped for a feud with Billy Graham, but Graham’s hip wouldn’t allow him to compete, so Reed went on to feud with Don Muraco. But his career never really rebounded. He was the first person to be eliminated from the inaugural Royal Rumble (by Jake Roberts) and was eliminated from the WWF World Title Tournament at Wrestle Mania IV in the first round. He ended his time in WWF in a feud with Randy Savage. After that, Reed went to WCW, initially competing as himself and reengaging his feud with Junkyard Dog. But after going nowhere there, he donned a mask and teamed with a masked Ron Simmons as Doom, being managed by Woman. While masked, their success was somewhat mixed, but after being forced to unmask, their stock began to soar. Now managed by Teddy Long, they defeated The Steiner Brothers (Rick Steiner & Scott Steiner) for the NWA World Tag Team Titles and engaged in feuds with the Steiners, The Freebirds (Michael Hayes & Jimmy Garvin), and Lex Luger & Sting. After losing the titles to The Freebirds, Doom split and Simmons and Reed feuded with each other. Reed left WCW for a time after that, then returned but again did not make many waves and was gone for good by 1992. At that point, he went to the USWA and defeated Junkyard Dog for the USWA World Title which he only held for a week. He then entered the GWF in the last days of its existence where he beat Rod Price for the vacant GWF North American Title. Reed would continue to compete on the independent circuit as it gave him the opportunity to participate in the rodeos in Kansas City, as he was also an accomplished bull rider. But in 2000, he started working for WLW and won their Heavyweight Title. After retiring in 2002, he returned in 2005 and competed for Jason Jones and Mid-States Wrestling, beating Michael Barry for the MStW Title. Reed would make several appearances for various Oklahoma independent companies such as IZW, MSWA, NWA-U, and SWCW. He had multiple appearances for MWA in Spavinaw, with his last officially documented match teaming with Angel [5th] and losing to MWA Tag Team Champions Bad Bromance (Justin Lee & Max McGuirk). In total, Reed has 51 documented matches in Oklahoma. The earliest was a win over Ron Bass at a TSW event in Oklahoma City on January 4, 1980 and the last was as a second to the Canadian Red Devil when he defeated Independent Wrestling International Champion Dustin Heritage for the title at a MStW event in Miami, OK on February 25, 2012.
