The Scoop

NEWS
WWE’s YouTube channel uploaded John Morrison vs. The Miz in a Falls Count Anywhere Match for the WWE Championship from the January 3, 2011 episode of "WWE Monday Night RAW".
In a major story broken last Friday by WrestlingInc.com and later confirmed by other industry insiders, WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon has notified talent that they will not be allowed to engage with third party services such as Cameo, Twitch, YouTube, and other side money-making businesses or risk getting terminated. The e-mail sent said that using their WWE-owned name and likeness in that way is "detrimental" to the company and "it is imperative that these activities be terminated within the next 30 days," which is October 2nd. "Continued violations will result in fines, suspension, or termination at WWE's discretion." Several WWE talent, including the likes of A. J. Styles, Roman Reigns, Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss, Bayley, Lana, Natalya, Paige, Ric Flair, and many others are all on Cameo or have very successful Twitch or YouTube channels and with a lot of downtime on their hands since they're not on the road anymore, it's a good way to keep engaging with fans while also earning money at the same time. All WWE talent are classified as independent contractors and now the company is forcing its talent to stop earning money outside from the promotion in what is considered a nasty move. WWE's official statement reads “Much like Disney and Warner Bros., WWE creates, promotes and invests in its intellectual property, i.e. the stage names of performers like The Fiend Bray Wyatt, Roman Reigns, Big E and Braun Strowman. It is the control and exploitation of these characters that allows WWE to drive revenue, which in turn enables the company to compensate performers at the highest levels in the sports entertainment industry. Notwithstanding the contractual language, it is imperative for the success of our company to protect our greatest assets and establish partnerships with third parties on a company wide basis, rather than at the individual level, which as a result will provide more value for all involved.”
A couple of former WWE employees reacted negatively much to no one's surprise to the news that Vince McMahon has instructed all the WWE Superstars to stop doing business on Cameo, YouTube, and Twitch by October 2nd. Mick Foley, who rarely says negative things about the company, said that the decision was a "crummy thing to do" as it prevents them from making a little extra money on the side. Kevin Nash also replied to Foley, who said that if you have to show up at a specific time and are restricted monetary gains in your personal time you should be classified as an employee and not as a 1099 independent contractor which all WWE - and AEW - stars fall under. "Ask for your health insurance coverage and profit sharing," Nash said. Foley wondered if he and fellow Hall of Famer Nash can "create a little good trouble" on behalf of the WWE Superstars of today and tomorrow by tackling this issue. "I love Vinnie Mac...but I think he’s wrong on this," Foley wrote. CM Punk, an often critic of WWE and its practices, had a rebel suggestion of his own. "Alright guys. Girls. Are they gonna fire everyone? Just keep doing you. Don’t worry," he wrote. Most of the top WWE Superstars all engage with third party services for a little extra income so his suggestion is probably not a bad one. Staying on the subject, one fan asked Punk if he will ever get a Cameo account. "Vince won’t let anyone do stuff," Punk replied. "Maybe it’s time for.....retribution!" he added, as he continues to mess with the fans. "Sooooooo guess now would be a good time to launch my Twitch and Cameo?" asked Renee Paquette, who recently departed WWE. Gail Kim, who works for Impact Wrestling, also weighed in, saying that as independent contracts, these superstars are getting every part of their life controlled by the company. One workaround that everyone seems to be going to do is change their Cameo, YouTube, and Twitch usernames to remove their WWE name and use their real name instead. "So a lot of us will be changing our Twitch usernames so it doesn't mention WWE in the slightest," ring announcer Mike Rome said. "Legally there is nothing they could do in this case." Paige also changed her Twitch username to reflect her real name rather than her WWE name, which the company owns. WWE has since said that they will be able to maintain YouTube and Twitch accounts provided that they do so in their real names, and they must inform WWE if they do so. They will not be able to use their WWE stage names for these accounts. There are still questions about whether they will be allowed to maintain Cameo accounts, but the belief is that they will not.
On his Twitch stream, A. J. Styles said WWE wants him and other performers to continue streaming, saying “From the contacts that I’ve had, the information I got is WWE does want us to interact with our fans, and that means streaming. They want this to happen. They want you to have a YouTube channel. There are things they want you to do and be able to do, and what we knew was a little vague at first.”
WWE released a reported 70 employees this past week. Most had been furloughed by the company back in April. Among those released were WWE Hall of Famer Gerald Brisco and Mike Rotunda. Brisco had been with the company for 36 years starting when he and his brother Jack Brisco sold their controlling stock shares in Georgia Championship Wrestling to Vince McMahon. Rotunda, the former Irwin R. Shyster, had been a road agent and producer for WWE since 2006. He is the father of current WWE Superstars Bray Wyatt and Bo Dallas, and the brother-in-law of WWE Hall of Famer Barry Windham.
The day after Gerald Brisco was released by WWE, he posted on Twitter "Been a busy day changes coming. I’ll be sharing the news next Wednesday".
Canadian Wrestling's Elite announced notes on its next tour. Right now their tour throughout Canada for October 17th through November 9th is on, but obviously there are many things out of their control. Vampiro has pulled out of the tour telling promoters he is shooting a movie internationally. They still don't know whether U.S. talent will be allowed in. Shane Douglas, Vincent, and Jimmy Jacobs are booked for the tour but they say they have enough talent to do the tour with all Canadian talent. Robin Lekime and Lory are also off the tour due to issues with traveling and quarantining from Europe. Norman Harass may be on the tour because his dates start later but it will be unlikely. Manitoba and Alberta dates are on. As far as Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Ontario, they don't allow indoor gatherings of more than 50 people in some places, 30 in others, and ten in others so without changes, those shows can't take place. But things can change.

Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of Tom Andrews, who competed under various names, but had a distinguished run as one of The Medics here in Oklahoma. He was 83 years old. Andrews, whose real last name was Andersen, joined the wrestling world after serving as a Marine. Trained by Guy Brunetti, he was an underneath guy until donning a mask and becoming The Claw. In that identity, he was part of an infamous incident where the actions of his manager, Beauregarde, almost got Portland Wrestling banned from television. Beauregarde went on TV and told everyone that he had told The Claw to wait in the bushes and put the Clawhold on the Easter Bunny, implying that he would squeeze until the Bunny was dead, so none of the kids would get their Easter candy. After the station was besieged by phone calls, Beauregarde had to adjust his statement, saying instead they would just cage him. Andrews, again as The Claw, was also part of an angle where he went on television to brag about the injuries he had inflicted on Alberto Torres during a match. Torres died just 3 days later (of completely unrelated issues), but Andrews felt incredibly guilty about the situation and almost quit the business at that point. Instead, he happened to luck into an opportunity to completely change his image. Billy Garrett had become upset about the payoffs he was receiving in Tennessee as 1/2 of The Medics, so he quit the team and was replaced by Andrews. The Medics were one of the most hated tag teams in Tennessee with Andrews as part of the team. In one of the most notorious actions taken by them, they knocked African-American wrestler Bearcat Brown out with ether, then painted him white. The next time they were on TV, their manager Ken Ramey declared that Brown was “so scared The Medics, he fainted and turned white.” Three legal actions were filed against them in one night alone as a result of that statement and the hatred was so hot that police had to confiscate bullets from the crowd members at shows The Medics were booked on. The Medics continued to terrorize Tennessee and the Central States area, then came back to TSW for their second run, this time managed by Skandar Akbar. On March 26, 1977, they defeated TSW United States Tag Team Champions Bob Sweetan & Tony Rocco for the titles. They held those belts for just under 3 months, losing them to Karl Kox & Jerry Oates on June 13, 1977 in Tulsa. Less than a month later, on July 6, 1977, they regained the titles from Kox & Oates. Their second reign was approximately 5 weeks and ended on August 16, 1977 when they lost to Porkchop Cash & Mike George. That pairing only held the belts for a week before dropping them back to The Medics on August 23rd, 1977 for their third and final reign as champions. One month later, on September 27, 1977, they lost the belts to Porkchop Cash & Dr. X and returned to Tennessee. Shortly after returning there, Billy Starr was unmasked during a feud between The Medics and Phil Hickerson & Dennis Condrey and The Medics’ time as a team was essentially over. Andrews needed to have surgery on his arm, but returned from that as The Intern (Sometimes billed as The Super Intern), adjusting his style by necessity. He was unmasked by Buck Robley and from that time on he competed as Tom Andrews. He even challenged Bob Backlund for the WWWF World Title under that name on January 4, 1980. After his retirement, he resided in Lawson, MO and had been known to be in failing health in recent years. As one of The Medics, Andrews competed in 8 documented cards in Oklahoma. The earliest was April 11, 1977 in Tulsa, where they defeated Terry Sawyer & Bob Sweetan. The last was September 12, 1977, where they lost a non-title match to Bill Watts & Karl Kox.
Greg Oliver of SLAM! Wrestling wrote a story about the passing of Tom Andrews, which you can read by clicking here.
