NEWS
Former WWE Women’s Champion Mickie James made her return on "Monday Night RAW" this past Monday after more than a year on the sidelines. James was interviewed by Sarah Schreiber and told her that she has returned to be the leader of the locker room but is also thinking about the gold. Her interview was interrupted by Lana and Natalya, who made fun of James for not even having a TikTok. James told Natalya that she’s been riding her family’s coattails for a long time. Mickie has been out of action since June of last year when she tore her ACL during a live event. She underwent successful surgery a month later and during her time out, she did commentary for 'WWE Main Event".

Randy Orton made a massive statement on RAW and turned on two-time WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair. After Orton successfully defeated Kevin Owens in the main event of RAW, Orton ran down Flair first but then said that he's still competing because he learned a lot from "The Nature Boy". Orton recounted a story of how he got in trouble in Illinois once when he was 22 years old and Ric was the only person who helped him out. But despite all this, Orton told Flair that he does not respect him anymore and doesn't love him anymore, calling him a liability. He mentioned how he is the son Flair wished he wanted and called him a "junkie" who is past his time. Responding to Orton, Flair said that he admits he likes being in the spotlight and at 71 years of age, he still gets to appear on RAW and old friends like Hulk Hogan call him to see what it feels like to still have that spotlight on him after all these years. Flair said he wanted to be by Orton's side when he breaks his record of 16 title wins and called Orton the best performer in professional wrestling. Orton then took the mic away from Flair and hugged him but then gave the HOFer a low blow. After he delivered the low blow, Orton held Flair and eased him on the mat. Orton then set up Flair for the punt but the kick to the head was never shown as the lights went out, presumably to really be careful with Flair. The lights came back up to show Flair completely knocked out from the punt. WWE uploaded a video on their YouTube transcribing what Randy Orton said to Ric Flair after he low blowed him on RAW. You can see the video by clicking here.

Among the matches added to WWE’s YouTube this past week was John Cena vs. A. J. Styles from "SummerSlam 2016".

Expect A. J. Styles to put up the Intercontinental Championship against Jeff Hardy at "SummerSlam".

Former TNA/Impact Wrestling wrestler Abyss, who now works as a producer for WWE, made a cameo appearance on SmackDown Friday night as part of a segment with A. J. Styles. Abyss appeared as Joseph Park, an alter ego that he also used in TNA. He played someone who Styles hired to develop the Phenomenal Intercontinental Statistic System. The system listed that there were no worthy challengers for Styles. Jeff Hardy interrupted Styles, setting up Styles vs. Hardy for the Intercontinental Title on SmackDown next week.

The court case of Jeff Jarrett vs. Anthem Sports & Entertainment case was recently thrown out. The judge of the case has asked both parties to enter into talks to reach a settlement rather than start a new trial from scratch.

The Tampa Bay Times recently interviewed Jeannine Mjoseth (AKA Mad Maxine) about her new self-published book The Chronicles of Mad Maxine. She had plenty to say about The Fabulous Moolah in an interview about her new book. “Don’t call her a madame. It sounds too elegant. She was a pimp,” she said. The full interview can be found here.

Oklafan congratulates Clint Poe on his engagement to his fiancée Jessica last week.

Dillon Hines provided a Facebook update on the health of his father, Bobby Fulton of The Fantastics: “He had a surgery today in which they found webbing and bones in his throat. This is from the radiation. They are trying to get it where he’ll be able to eat again so that he may get healthy. Continued prayers please!”

Natalya and her family posted a video celebrating the anniversary of the passing of Jim ‘The Anvil’ Niedhart. You can see the video by clicking here.

Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of James Harris, who wrestled under multiple names, but was best known in this state as first Sugar Bear Harris and then nationally as Kamala. He passed away on August 9th at the age of 7-0. He had just tested positive for COVID-19 a few days prior to his passing. Harris was born in Mississippi and had a rough upbringing. His father was killed when he was 4 and he worked as a sharecropper to help support his family. Eventually he drifted into a life of crime and dropped out of high school in 9th grade. It was strongly suggested that he leave town, so he moved, first to Florida and then to Michigan where he met Bobo Brazil, who would guide him to his initial training. Debuting in 1978 as Sugar Bear Harris, he spent most of his early career in the Southern part of the US, also working as Ugly Bear Harris and “Big” Jim Harris. The earliest record for an Oklahoma appearance occurs under that name as he defeated Stan Lane and Billy Starr in a Handicap Match on September 3, 1979. He would capture his first title, the TSW United States Tag Team Titles, with Oki Shikina (managed by Percy Pringle, III) in October of 1979, by winning a tournament, but would only hold them until November 5th, when they lost the belts to Jim Garvin and Herb Calvert. Harris then ventured into the Southeastern territory and made a trip overseas to Europe in 1981. There, he competed as the “Mississippi Mauler”, which foreshadowed several of the characteristics of Kamala. After suffering a broken ankle, Harris returned to Mississippi in 1982. He would make a visit to Memphis to see his friend Troy Graham and caught notice of Jerry Lawler, who offered him a job. Collectively, Lawler, Harris, and Jerry Jarrett created the Kamala character (initially spelled “Kimala”), drawing on ideas provided by The Great Mephisto. The look of Kamala was based on a Frank Frazetta painting and while working as Kimala, Harris wore robes and refused to speak English. He spent a year in Memphis, feuding with Lawler before moving to Mid-South, where he became part of Skandar Akbar’s contingent, Devastation, Inc. Though he never won any titles in MSW, he had high-profile feuds with Jim Duggan, Butch Reed, the Junkyard Dog, and Andre the Giant. About half a year after debuting in MSW, he was brought into WCCW, where he feuded with the Von Erichs. But because of his matches with Andre, Kamala made his debut in the WWF in 1984. In one of the most famous segments of the “Tuesday Night Titans” show, he appeared to bite the head off a live chicken. He would continue to feud with Andre as well as challenge Hulk Hogan for the WWF World Title before leaving the WWF in late 1984. From there, he went to the AWA and feuded with Sgt. Slaughter. He also challenged AWA World Champion Rick Martel for his title multiple times. But most of the period from 1984 - 1986 was spent outside of the US in Japan and Canada. He returned to the WWF in 1986, managed by The Wizard and renewed his feud with Hulk Hogan for the WWF World Title, which would mark the pinnacle of his career. He would never capture the title, though and would be put in a tag team with Sika before leaving the WWF, reportedly due to frustrations over pay. He went back to WCCW and reestablished his feud with the Von Erichs before making another tour of Japan and ultimately returning to Memphis, where he feuded with Jerry Lawler and beat him for the first of 4 USWA World Titles. After spending two years in Memphis, he made his way back to the WWF again, but again, issues of pay started to raise their head, especially after his "SummerSlam" match with The Undertaker. Nonetheless, he remained in the company, participating in the first televised Casket Match against The Undertaker at "Survivor Series" in 1992. In 1993, a storyline was concocted where Kamala began to suffer abuse at the hands of manager Harvey Whippleman and handler Kim Chee. This led to Reverend Slick leading him away from them and turning him face, attempting to “humanize” him by teaching him things like bowling. Kamala engaged in a feud with Bam Bam Bigelow and was supposed to face him at "WrestleMania IX", but that match was cut for time. He was also supposed to participate in the 1994 Royal Rumble, but was replaced (for unspecified reasons) by Virgil. Harris left the WWF for the final time in late 1993 and entered semi-retirement, though he did participate in some overseas tours. In 1995, he entered WCW as part of the Dungeon of Doom and again feuded with Hulk Hogan, but was gone before the end of the year. At this point, Kamala’s career began to wind down and was confined to mostly special appearances. He participated in the Gimmick Battle Royal at "WrestleMania X7" in 2001. He appeared as a guest at Jay Lethal and SoCal Val’s wedding in TNA in 2012. And his last match was tagging with The Weedman against The Haters at a Juggalo Championship Wrestling event in 2010. In 2011, Harris had to have his left leg amputated below the knee as a result of complications from high blood pressure and diabetes. The right leg followed in 2012. Harris would go on to write an autobiography in 2015 and compose over 100 songs, some of which were recorded by him on the album “Kamala Sings”. In total, Harris competed in 48 documented matched in Oklahoma, the last of which was a victory over 3rd Rail at SWCW on February 2nd, 2008.

As it's customary when someone associated with professional wrestling passes away, the wrestling world reacts on social media, and it was no different when Kamala passed away on August 9th. WWE, Impact Wrestling, and AEW all put out their own graphic announcing the death of the 70-year-old. Several of Kamala's former colleagues also wrote on Twitter remembering him. "Very sadden by the passing of Big Jim 'Kamala', like everyone else I would always ask if it was ok to take the leg drop for the finish as requested by the office," Hulk Hogan wrote. "Jim would always say 'let's just keep making that money', he was such a kind soul, RIP big brother." "A character that you created and a nice, nice man. Athletic Big Man," wrote Jim Ross, now the lead voice for AEW. Fellow AEW personality Taz wrote that he had the pleasure of meeting Kamala a couple of times and was always a "tremendously nice man." WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart said he was heartbroken to hear about the passing of Kamala. He said he met Kamala in 1981 in London and then caught up with him three years later in WWE. "Unlike his heel character, he was one of the friendliest, nicest, happy-go-lucky guys I ever knew in pro wrestling," Bret wrote, adding that he had the pleasure of working with him in 1992 when he was WWE champion. "He always had a big smile despite all his challenges, including the loss of both legs. Always a kind and happy gentle soul. I’ll miss him for always being so good to me. R.I.P. Big Jim Harris." NXT General Manager William Regal also mentioned how he first saw Kamala on TV when he was a kid in the United Kingdom and at live shows as The Mississippi Mauler. He described him as a lovely man. The Iron Sheik, in a typical all caps tweet, wrote, "GOD BLESS THE KAMALA HE ALWAYS PUT ON A SHOW FOR THE FANS GOOD BIG MAN WHO WORKED THE GIMMICK BETTER THEN MOST IT BREAK MY HEART." Missy Hyatt wrote that before she was involved in professional wrestling herself, she used to keep his pin up in her bartending locker in the early 80s. "One of the best old school gimmicks," Hyatt added. Another WWE Hall of Famer, Goldberg, also took note of Kamala's passing. He said that Kamala was the first wrestler he had the pleasure of seeing live. "I was a believer," Goldberg wrote, adding that he was saddened when he heard the news.

There has been a GoFundMe set up for funeral expenses and family help for the family of James "Kamala" Harrris. For more information you can check out the page by clicking here.

The WWE Network has added Kamala content from a number of different promotions including WWF, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, World Class and other promotions.
