How Long Will Romero Remain In the Dark?

How Long Will Romero Remain In the Dark?

Posted: Sep 25th 2007 By: CMBurnham

One of FCW Tag Team Champion Romero Contreras' many nicknames is "The Dark Match Main Event". It's a name he earned while competing for NWA-U. Romero found himself in the opening match of each card and gained a cult following, as well as an undefeated streak in that position. He was just branching further up the card when NWA-U folded earlier this year.

With ComPro running weekly shows since the beginning of August, Romero once again decided to carve himself a niche and bring his "Dark Match Main Event" status to his home federation. He's faced unknowns such as SI-X and M. C. Hamburn as well as up-and-comers like El Super Colibri. He's even been victorious over veterans like the Canadian Luchadore, Rico Suave and former TPW Champion Michael York.

This past Saturday, Romero was met with a blast from the past. When he stared across the ring for his opponent, it was none other than SWCW Sooner Xtreme Champion Luc Lapointe. These 2 had not been in the same federation since 2002. Lapointe came to ComPro to prove that he deserved a spot on the roster like so many others and, while he didn't win his match, a case can be made that he dominated Romero for most of the contest. But, as always, Romero hoisted Lapointe up and delivered the Kool-Aid Krunch to keep his undefeated streak in opening matches intact.

Despite never wrestling outside the 1st match, Romero's victories have not gone unnoticed by the fans and chants of "Title Shot!" are being heard after his victories. The fans' request are also being heard by current ComPro Champion Anthony Jackson, who has stated on the ComPro message board that he thinks all of Romero's opponents have been "jabronis" and his victories do not make him worthy of a title match. But with a victory over a current champion in Oklahoma, even Jackson must now realise that Romero's increasing victories are going to bring them into the ring together eventually.

Until that time arrives, expect Romero to continue to rack up wins. But eventually, he will step out of the "Dark Match" and into the shining spotlight of the main event.
