Cody Rhodes Addresses The Sting-To-AEW Rumors

Cody Rhodes Addresses The Sting-To-AEW Rumors

Posted: May 26th 2020 By: Alex Hoegler - TheSportster.com

Rumors about Sting heading to the rival AEW promotion began two weeks ago following some social media activity between him and Cody.

Sting had some nice things to say to Lance Archer, prompting Cody to respond with a mysterious message.

And when Mattel announced that they were removing Sting action figures from their Legends 7 series, Cody responded with another tweet that only fueled the Sting-to-AEW speculation.

Cody became the inaugural AEW TNT Champion at Saturday's Double or Nothing pay-per-view after defeating Archer in the tournament final. During the match, Cody paid tribute to Sting by performing his signature "Stinger Splash" maneuver.

Following the event, Cody was interviewed by Sports Illustrated, where he addressed the use of the Stinger Splash as well as the Sting rumors.

"You can read into every step I take, every breath I breathe, and every glance of my eye," Cody said. "Look all the way back to All In. This is something that was willed into existence. My life is willing (expletive) into existence. If I was a little boy and got to do a Stinger Splash and that’s where it ends, great."

What about the Sting-to-AEW rumors?

"I don't know what his schedule is like or where he's at in this world, but nothing would please me more than to stand in a ring across from Sting," Cody said. "There has been no contact, but that's my way of reaching out."

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported last week that there is something in regards to the Sting rumors. For what it's worth, the 2016 WWE Hall of Fame inductee and former WCW World Champion is no longer under contract with the company.

Sting suffered a serious neck injury in his last match, a WWE World Heavyweight Championship clash with Seth Rollins at Night of Champions 2015. Sting officially announced his retirement at the 2016 WWE Hall of Fame ceremony, but there have been rumors about him coming back for another match.

Last year, Sting said at Starrcast that he'd come back for "the right price." He has also voiced his desire about having a showdown of some sort with The Undertaker, but as time passes, that dream continues to fade away.

Don't Be Surprised If This Happens

If Sting and AEW have mutual interest, they're obviously going to keep it as quiet as possible. Fans knew that the likes of Matt Hardy, Brodie Lee and Jon Moxley would end up in AEW, even though the wrestlers and company managed to keep it a secret. Sting, of course, isn't going to drop any serious hints about heading to AEW. So fans of The Vigilante have good reason to be optimistic about him possibly joining the new promotion. It just seems like a perfect fit.
