NEWS
Mickie James will be the first individual to have a singles match against Ronda Rousey in front of a big audience as the veteran superstar was picked to take on Rousey in her four dates in Europe. Rousey and James got involved in an angle that closed RAW last Monday after James continued to beat up an injured Natalya as part of the 10-Women Tag Team Match main event. For the second week in a row, Rousey came to the aid of Natalya, and after she got kicked from the back by James, Rousey stepped in between the ropes, took down the former champion and locked her in an armbar to cause the DQ. Ever since signing with WWE, Rousey has appeared on the majority of the RAW shows and will now be thrown in the ring alone for her first one-on-one matches. Rousey will be at the May 16th show in Geneva, Switzerland, the May 17th show in Vienna, Austria, the May 18th show in Turin, Italy, and the May 19th show in Paris, France.
Jim Ross called Ronda Rousey’s match at WrestleMania 34 the best in-ring debut he’s ever seen. You can see the video by clicking here.
With RAW in St. Louis, MO last Monday night, Harley Race was backstage at the show. Sunil Singh wrote about reconnecting with him: “An honor to reconnect w/ @8XNWAChampion. When we 1st started out in this business, we attended Harley’s camps in Eldon, Missouri, multiple times, hoping to get noticed by the big leagues. Learning under Harley’s guidance in our early years was truly a highlight of our careers.”
Steve Austin praised both Shinsuke Nakamura and A. J. Styles for their performances in Saudi Arabia: “Shinsuke so much better as a heel. AJ is off the charts good. #WGRR”
It looks like the previous plans for Jerry "The King" Lawler and Jim Ross to provide commentary for The Greatest Royal changed as WWE advertised the duo in a different role. The two WWE Hall of Famers joined fellow Hall of Famer Booker T on the Kickoff panel, a panel which was anchored by Byron Saxton since Renee Young was not traveling with the crew.. No women from WWE made the trip unfortunately. Lawler and Ross last did commentary at WrestleMania earlier this month, calling the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal which coincidentally was also part of the Kickoff show that day. The Greatest Royal Rumble was sold out and over 60,000 fans were in attendance for the show.
The WWE women were not be part of the Greatest Royal Rumble on April 27th but that does not mean that they're not getting their share of the money. During the latest episode of "Dinner With The King" podcast, Jerry "The King" Lawler said that the women are being compensated handsomely even though they were not allowed to perform on this show. Strict laws in the country does not allow women to do most things although WWE hopes to change that idea down the road for their future shows in Saudi Arabia. At this point it's not known how much the Kingdom paid WWE to perform at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium although rumors are that the sum is in the eight figures. WWE signed a 10-year deal with Saudi Arabia and will be hosting more shows there in the years to come. WWE has been harshly criticized for doing the show considering the many issues with human rights in the country but Triple H has defended the move saying this is just the first step towards change in Saudi Arabia.
Meddlesome Brewing Company, a brewery based in Memphis, TN has released a new beer called Jerry “the King” Lager, in honour of Jerry Lawler. Despite lending his name to the product, Lawler hasn't tasted the beer, citing his lifetime alcohol-free policy as the reason.
Konnan's return to Asistencia Asesoría y Administración came in a video shown at Friday night's TV tapings in Tijuana, Mexico where he was shown for a brief moment. There is a new outsider stable that did a run-in at the end of the show of Juventud Guerrera, Teddy Hart and Kevin Kross (who had left the promotion).
The big news over the weekend came from the Asistencia Asesoría y Administración event in Tijuana, Mexico as we not only saw undercard talent from The Crash work the opener but also saw the MAD faction invade AAA. They showed a video of Konnan leading up to the group’s arrival. This version of MAD featured Juventud Guerrera, Kevin Kross, and new member Teddy Hart. It doesn’t appear El Zorro will be part of this group as he’s mostly been focusing on starting up his new promotion KAOZ Lucha Libre. Sexy Star also wasn’t with them, but don’t be shocked if she returns to AAA. Konnan’s return has been long rumored going back to when he and The Crash parted ways, partly due to The Crash believing he was going back to AAA. The rumor of his return picked up about a month ago. There’s a belief that with Konnan returning that likely means some of the guys who left AAA could return. At least one person who left AAA said he’d go back “if they pay me” but only on a “pay-per-appearance” deal and he won’t sign a contract with AAA. Most would prefer that given a lot of the talent that has left AAA like Penta El Zero M, Rey Fenix, Garza Jr., etc. wrestle in various places and have found being independents a better move (and more freedom) should they need to be available for a bigger/better situation. Konnan returning to AAA should make their shows far more interesting.
Bill Goldberg did an interview with the "Two Man Power Trip of Wrestling" podcast, explaining how it was a difficult situation to go on last at the Hall of Fame with the show being so long and everyone needing to get their time in. You can listen to the interview by clicking here.
Ric Flair made an appearance last week on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon", joining Offset & Metro Boomin as they performed “Ric Flair Drip”.
There was a fight at last Sunday night's Cleveland vs. Indiana NBA playoff game between Lance Stephenson of the Pacers and Jeff Green of the Cavaliers. On "Inside the NBA", Charles Barkley watched the clip and said, "Ric Flair!" USA Today mentioned it was only missing a WWE ring and Vince McMahon.
Bobby Fulton has announced his retirement and said his final match will be May 26th at the World Class Big Time Wrestling event in Circleville, OH. It will be Fulton's retirement match and a celebration of 40 years in the business.
