JR's Blog: JR Talks to Terry Funk About The Funker's Medical Issues in Philly
Posted: Sep 20th 2016 By: Jim Ross
Beautiful day here in Norman, Oklahoma and I thank you for stopping by our site. Busy week as Jim Cornette and will I tag team to do a RINGSIDE Show this Friday night in Baltimore at Jimmy's Famous Seafood and tickets are still available at www.missiontix.com including a handful of VIP Meet/Greet tickets. Love to see you there. Plus I will be appearing at the HUGE Legends Reunion this Saturday in Joppa, Maryland at the MCW Arena.
I hopped on the telephone today with my old friend, the legendary Funker, Terry Funk who was rumored to have been gravely ill this weekend after allegedly feeling poorly in Philly at a House of Hardcore event for Terry's pal Tommy Dreamer. Reports were that Terry was seriously stricken with some unknown ailment that some even speculated could be a heart issue and he was forced to leave the venue early.
Figured that the only way to get the facts was to go to the "Horses's Head" so I called West Texas and my old broadcast partner answered his phone with a shockingly meek, weak and sickly voice which shocked me. As soon as Terry heard my obviously concerned and shaken voice he started laughing and was right back into his beloved, Terry Funk voice that I often borrow for my Ross Report podcast.
"I've gotten probably 15 phone calls this morning from friends, many of who I haven't heard from in forever, and I just thought I'd start having some fun with this latest rumor. I've been able to lead many of the callers down a funny as hell road until I laughed so hard that I had to 'break character," said the WWE Hall of Famer, one of the greatest performers ever in the genre and a noted film star including such films as 'Roadhouse' and 'Paradise Alley.'
"I had abdominal hernia surgery just four days before I flew to Philly for Dreamer's promotion and I was supposed to lay low. I felt fine, ignored the doctor's advice and decided to make the trip and keep my booking. By the time I flew from Amarillo to Philly and then signed what seemed like a thousand autographs that day, when the show roiled around I was completely fatigued. It had been a helluva long day and, dammit Ross, I was tired! I had been up 48 hours straight. "
"I asked if I could leave early and they said that I could so I went back to the hotel and went to bed. I was dead ass tired and I had to get up early and fly back to Amarillo.," the 72 year old said.
"I'm still alive and I'm just fine," Funk loudly proclaimed in full voice.
"At least, I THINK that I'm fine," said The Funker as he mischievously closed our chat.
I'll have more of this conversation on this week's Ross Report podcast that drops Tuesday night at 9 pm ET with Ring of Honor Champion Adam Cole as my special guest.
