Max McGuirk Shares Memories of Dusty Rhodes
Posted: Jun 13th 2015 By: Max McGuirk
There are plenty of people that were much closer to Dusty Rhodes than I was. I grew up in the locker rooms with him and Sapphire as a young kid. He was a great friend to my mom. Always a light hearted guy trying to make you laugh.
When I had my opportunity in FCW he welcomed me with open arms. There wasn't a day that went by that he didn't ask how my mom was or had some story about my family. He always had my back and always pitched ideas to me. He was the guy that helped me pick a name that would honor my grandfather. I was just a small kid from Oklahoma and he treated me with respect and made me feel at home.
I will never forget promo days with Dusty on Wednesdays in the FCW arena. We all were captivated by his words and Charisma even in his 60's. Nobody could or ever will be able to cut a promo the way that Dream could. The one word that stands out when I think of Dusty is Teacher. He was an incredible educator for his industry. Very detailed and would work long hours with some guys to get them inline with his vision. Dusty Rhodes made many stars with the work he helped put into these characters and how he taught them to speak and act. The wresting world lost an important figure behind the scenes from his incredible ideas and mind for the business.
The last time I saw Dusty was on an independent show I was working in Miami Florida that was put on by one of his really close friends Alfred. Dusty came up and hugged me and we talked about still working on the independent shows. No I never made it past FCW, but that doesn't mean I was any less of a person and Dream never treated me any different. It was great to see him and his wife. He hung out in the back with my mom and his wife telling old stories about Sapphire. It was a fantastic day in Florida that day. Who knew that would be the last time I would ever see the American Dream. I was shocked and heart broken when I heard the news, I didn't want to believe it. I saw Dusty as someone that would never leave us. I will never forget your big smile, your laugh, and your enthusiasm for life. You've made an impact on so many lives and I am fortunate to have known you. Rest in Peace Dream. God Speed
