Genetic Perfection Reigns Supreme!

Michael Barry has come a long way in the last few weeks.

Not too long ago it appeared his wrestling career was over after being put through a table by the behemoth monster, Titan. He got an emotional send off by the TCW roster when he announced his retirement and even reconciled with his cousin and former tag team partner, Alan Steele. I was sad to see one of the most promising wrestlers I've seen in a long time being forced to hang up his boots due to injury but at least he appeared to be going out on a high note.

It seems, however, that the wrestling business wasn't through with Mr. Saturday Night. Boyd Bradford decided to pole a little fun at Steele and Genetic Perfection manager Rich Rude for showing a little compassion in sending off Barry. When Steele took exception, he got a beatdown by Bradford's Family and the beatdowns continued. This brought out Barry, who helped clean house and announce that he was back, to hell with what the doctors said.
The reformed Genetic Perfection got a shot at Cerebrus and Roosevelt's Tag Team championship and seemed poised to regain the belts they had worn for so long previously. Bradford Family member Kincaid interfered before they could win the match and another brutal beatdown occurred, this time on all three members of Gentic Perfection. Rude was hurt so bad he wasn't seen for weeks on TCW television.

The Bradford Family also prevented Barry and Steele from getting some revenge on Titan by interfering in their handicap match and allowing Titan to pick up the win. What we had here is one of the hottest feuds in wrestling. Boyd Bradford was sticking his nose in Barry and Steele's business at every turn and his charges had taken out their manager, possibly for good.

Then on the latest episode of TCW, Genetic Perfection had one more shot at the tag titles and a chance to get some revenge on the Hounds of Hell for the sneak attacks and constant interference in their business.

Things in the match were once again going Barry and Steele's way when, with the referee distracted, Boyd interfered in the match and hit Steele with Rich rude's briefcase, something he has been carrying around recently as a trophy.

Fortunately GP's manager wasn't going to let this happen and made his triumphant return to TCW, taking his briefcase back and breaking it--yes, breaking it--over Bradford's back. Steele went for the pinfall on Roosevelt and three seconds later we had new TCW tag team champions. Don't be too sad for Boyd though, he still has the Jr. championship in his Family and with Kincaid being the champion, he could have it for a very long time.

This is Genetic Perfection's second (I think) reign as champions. The first time they were heels and highly entertaining. I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do as a babyface team because when they split up, Barry became a face while Steele and Rude remained heels. The whole retirement angle is what turned Steele and Rude and reunited the three men.
In past blogs I've been very high on Michael Barry and thought he had a great run in singles competition when he was the TCW International champion. I am curious to see how he could do if he continued in singles competition but in no way am I discouraged that he is back in a tag team. For one thing, I love tag team wrestling. I think it is a dying art in wrestling and I welcome any opportunity to see talented wrestlers perform in a team. Secondly, Alan Steele is a talented wrestler in his own right and can more than hold his own in Genetic Perfection. I'm already looking forward to rematches with the Hounds of Hell and whatever other tag team TCW throws their way. Maybe Steve and Greg Anthony of the Empire will join forces and try to claim gold for their stable. For now I'm happy that two of my favorite wrestlers are sitting on top of the tag team division in this great little federation. Congratulations Michael and Alan, you deserve it! Especially since it appeared that Barry's career was over just a short while ago.

One of the things I like so much about TCW is when I tune into an episode I'm often treated to what I like to call a "Blast from the past." TCW likes to bring in legends and veterans of the wrestling world for one or two time appearances. In the past, notable names like Matt Hardy and Chris masters have shown up as well as legends like Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Jake 'the Snake" Roberts. it's just something they do that's really cool and I enjoy seeing the guys I was a fan of in the past still out there earning a paycheck and having fun.

On this weeks episode we got an appearance from Dan "the Beast" Severn. Severn is a former UFC champion and held the NWA World title for, like a decade back in the '90's. He was also in the WWF for a brief time as part of Jim Cornette's NWA stable. The group was short lived and I know Bob Holly doesn't remember being Bombastic very fondly but I enjoyed the group.

Severn took on Vordell Walker in the opening match and the man still has some moves. Walker gets the submission win but takes a brutal pounding from Severn before he does so. This brings out sigmon, who Walker has been feuding with in TCW to get a few shots in, but Vordell is able to fight him off. I have to say Vordell impressed the hell out of me here. I've seen him on several independent shows in my neck of the woods and liked his work but he went toe to toe with Dan Severn here. Severn may be a veteran of the wrestling world but, as he proved here, he can still dish out the punishment in the ring. Vordell took what he had to offer and was able to make him tap out in the end. Good stuff.

We also got to see the first appearance on TCW of Tim Storm since he won the TCW Championship a few weeks ago. I will freely admit that I was already a little biased against Storm even before he turned heel and joined the Empire. It's really no fault of Storm's that I feel this way. You see, I have a pet peeve about people loudly smacking gum in my ear. It just drives me nuts and everytime Storm is in the ring, he's smacking away on gum. Often he's even nice enough to show it to us and it just irks me. I won't deny the mans talent though, and admit he had a pretty good following as a fan favorite.

I was looking forward to what he could do as a heel and waiting for him to explain his motivations for joining the Empire. I knew it was because he wants to be champion so bad but I just knew he could get solid heat by giving us an old fashioned heel interview. What I got was so much better.

Storm defended his title against Americos, the man who the Empire feels is really Barrett Blade under a mask and have been going to great lengths to prove this. Storm brutalized him in a hard hitting match (smacking gum the entire time) and won when he used a spinebuster to crush Americos into the steel steps to the ring. The referee ruled Americos couldn't continue and declared Storm the winner.

That's when things got interesting.

Storm really showed his new mean streak here. First, he picked up Americos and threw him over his shoulder, as if he was going to help him from ringside. Then he just casually dropped him onto the floor. Then he helped Americos up only to slam him headfirst into the steel steps. He punctuated the beating by spitting his gum on Americos (something I wish he'd done at the beginning of the match) before leaving. This is a much different Tim Storm than the fans of TCW are used to seeing and with this new mean streak we just may be looking at a long reign from him as TCW champion.

I want to say one more thing about TCW before I close out this post. They have one of the best commentators in wrestling workling for them right now. Brian Thompson is a heel commentator much in the same veign as men like Bobby Heenan and Jesse Ventura. He sells the storylines perfectly and often has me laughing. During the Storm beatdown on Americos he had me laughing several times. Thompson and his commentating partner Matt Rhodes make the TCW show even more enjoyable every week, unlike TNA's Mike Tenay and Taz, who just grate on the nerves because they are so annoying. I can't emphasize enough how a good announcing team can add to the product, while a bad one can distract from it. TCW has one of the best.

All in all we had another solid episode this week. I'm happy for Genetic Perfection and hope they have a long title reign full of excellent matches. I'm also looking forward to Lance Hoyt and Scott Phoenix get their eventual rematches against Tim Storm and seeing what king of shenanigans the empire come up with to keep that belt around his waist.

I don't walk away from watching TCW feeling like I did after viewing an episode of Raw or Impact. with Raw I feel frustration because they are, quiet simply, not giving me what I want to see as a fan. I feel like they are trying to force stuff on me that I don't want, or denying things the majority of the wrestling world wants to see. With Impact I'm seeing rehashes of old WWE storylines or attempting to do the exact same thing the WWE are doing at the moment (Heel Dixie = Heel HHH). With TCW I either see a storyline continuing naturally or reaching a satisfying conclusion. I see at least two competitive and entertaining matches every week and usually get a dose of nostalgia when I see an old favorite. Out of these three television shows, which one would you be most inclined to watch and enjoy?
