WWE Jim Ross's Best Bouts: The Undertaker Vs Mankind, The Rock, More
Posted: Aug 2nd 2013 By: CMBurnham
WWE is filled with legendary figures, but there are precious few who have the pedigree of Jim Ross.
Good Ol' J. R. has been in the game since 1974 and made his debut with the company by commentating at WrestleMania IX in 1993.
So, when we at Digital Spy recently interviewed Ross we also quizzed him on the most memorable bouts in his tenure.
"I guess probably the most memorable match of the modern era is the 1998 Hell in a Cell match with The Undertaker and Mick Foley. That's the one that is quoted the most. Many of the American sports websites lift my call of that match and put it to the video of an NBA slam dunk or a big collision in an American Football game, things of that nature. It's replicated a lot in today's society, so that's probably one of the most memorable ones.
'Stone Cold' Steve Austin vs The Rock
"When you look at the fact that I've been broadcasting since the mid-'70s and the hundreds and hundreds of matches that I've had the privilege of calling, it's very, very challenging - impossible quite frankly to select one. The Attitude Era was dotted with great match-ups. I had the privilege of calling three Steve Austin vs The Rock WrestleMania main events. Those were very, very memorable."
"It's hard to pick one out of the boat that is your all-time favorite. They're all at different times in my life, different times in my career. Styles are different. Presentations are different. It's a tough one to answer, but it's a good problem to have... I had the opportunity to call Shawn Michaels matches before his back injury and then, more importantly, upon his return. His first match with Triple H is a very memorable match."
Sting vs Ric Flair WCW World Heavyweight Championship (1990)
"I can go all the way back to my days working for WCW. The Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat rivalries were epic. The matches involving a young Sting and Flair were very significant in the culture of our business at that time."
Terry Funk vs Ric Flair - Clash of the Champions
"Terry Funk, who was in his 40s coming into WCW and him having his rivalry with Ric Flair - those were memorable matches. There's so many of them that those are just a handful of many that come to mind.
"One of the things that I really look forward to in my spoken word tour is the bulk of the events are going to have the Q&A section, where the fans can ask questions in a very intimate setting. I think that we'll probably flesh out even more matches in that, because everybody's got a favorite.
"Everybody's got a favorite period of time, everybody's got a favorite match or favorite Superstar or whatever it may be that I'm going to be able to talk about. I'm sure that those roads will be well-traveled at this point in time."
