Dusty's Blog: Trip To Korea
Posted: Feb 26th 2010 By: mikeiles
A week in Korea. After I died in San Francisco. Not bad for a man my age.
This trip started off about as normal as any trip could. Pack, feed the dogs, get to the airport. Hope the police don?t tow my vehicle because I parked where I wasn?t supposed to, but the outlaw in me insisted I do something outside the lines.
Three hours to San Francisco. A three hour layover. Assorted phone calls and a refusal to pay $10 to access wi-fi in the airport. Load my busted up ass on a wide bodied jet, and end up sitting next to a wide bodied Korean bastid for 12 hours.
Off the plane, and the hour or so it takes to get through customs and passport control. THEN.. we ride an hour to our hotel. A nice hotel. A really nice $300 a night hotel that prides itself on it?s internet service and phone service. So much so, a day of wi-fi at the Seoul Marriott is $25 and a phone call is $5 each. Even if I have my All American ATT card at the ready. SOOOO, after I see a moron that has been corrupted by The View and The Oprah has flown a plane into a building across the street from my daughter in laws work in Austin, I headed to Osan AFB to do some paperwork.
After I was cleared for duty for my country, I snuck off to check in at home. By now, you can easily see I have been out of touch for the better part of 36 hours.
I couldn?t figure out what the first dozen or so emails meant. Latest ones at top were the ones explaining the earlier ones on the 3rd page. Those were the ones asking a dead man to reply.
Then when I GUESSED what was going on, I found Brett. My oldest. He filled me in on everything. I had suffered a massive heart attack and died in San Francisco. Only problem, I had no idea. As far as I knew, I was sitting in Osan Korea waiting on the rest of the crew to get their papers.
This would have been funny, except for my kids. Brett spent two days answering calls and emails. Ethan actually had a friend come to the door and offer to help with anything he needed. This is how Ethan found out about the story.
Nothing else on this trip could come close to this excitement. The crew behaved themselves, which is unusual for a group of 40 year old boys. None of the trips were very long. Crowds were good. And it was cold.
Went back into North Korea. Once the grandmaster webmaster gets the photos, I?ll have a few on here.
Guess that?s it for now. Back to the real world?????????
