Jim Cornette will be back on Wrestling Observer Radio this coming Wednesday.
Things were pretty somber in Dallas Monday for Raw due to the death of Umaga. Most figure it'll be worse Tuesday because his closest friends are mostly on the Smackdown side. We were told a video package was being prepared. It may air on television, or maybe just on Internet. Shad Gaspard and Charlie Haas were both described as devastated.
A documentary movie called "Memphis Heat" was written about in Monday's Memphis Commercial Appeal. It's about the history of pro wrestling in Memphis in the 50s, 60s and 70s focusing on Jerry Lawler, Bill Dundee, Lance Russell, Sputnik Monroe, Jackie Fargo, Jimmy Hart and others. It's based on Ron Hall's publicity picture book "Sputnik, Masked Men & Midgets: The Early Days of Memphis Wrestling." For those of you who are older fans, the book is a fun collectors piece. The movie will be released next year.
Jim Cornette, who debuts tonight on ROH television, cut a promo on Vince McMahon and Vince Russo among others on the ROH web site at http://www.rohwrestling.com/news/article.aspx?id=3111
WWE was granted an extension until December 15 to respond to Jody Hamilton?s breach of contract lawsuit over Deep South Wrestling being cut as developmental back in 2006.
?Dr. Death? Steve Williams, who is currently battling cancer, got some good news this past week when a PET scan indicated that the cancer in his stoma was getting smaller. He said he had several more chemo treatments and is more determined than ever to beat the disease.
Jim Ross sent a case of his BBQ sauce to catering Monday in Dallas for RAW.
Tim Brooks announced at the NAWA show this past Saturday that he has been diagnosed with kidney cancer and doctors will not allow him to compete in the ring. He was scheduled to tag with his son Clayton and take on the Oklahoma/Mexico connection. Brooks announced that he was scheduled to have surgery at the beginning of February. Oklafan wishes him a full and speedy recovery.
Oklafan would to congratulate Draven Cross who surpassed one year as ComPro Heavyweight Champion on December 6th.
Oklafan would like to congratulate Associate Editor Mike Iles on his recent engagement to his girlfriend MaLisa on December 1st.
Oklafan was saddened to hear about the death of Eddie Fatu aka Umaga. Umaga debuted in 1995 and wrestled in Japan where he formed a tag team with Matt Anoa?I, better known as Rosey. In 2002, they came to the WWE, where they were known as 3 Minute Warning, based on their tendency to defeat their opponents in 3 minutes or less, and used as henchmen by Eric Bischoff. Jamal (Umaga) was released approximately one year later after a brawl at a nightclub and briefly went to NWA-TNA where he competed as Ekmo Fatu and frequently tagged with Sonny Siaki. He also spent most of 2005 in Japan, then returned to the WWE in 2006 as Umaga, together with manager Armando Alejandro Estrada. He won the WWE Intercontinental Title twice during his time there and had strong feuds with John Cena, Triple, Jeff Hardy & C. M. Punk. Perhaps his most famous accomplishment was being Vince McMahon?s choice to face Bobby Lashley (who was Donald Trump?s choice) in the ?Battle of the Billionaires? match at WrestleMania 23. Umaga lost and Vince had his head shaved as result. Umaga was released from the WWE on June 8, 2009 after failing a Wellness Policy test and refusing to enter rehab for the problem. Prior to his death, he had completed the ?Hulkamania? tour in Australia, where he frequently faced either Brutus Beefcake or Ken Anderson. Eddie Fatu has 2 documented appearances in Oklahoma. On December 21, 2002, 3 Minute Warning lost to Rob Van Dam & Kane in Oklahoma City in the opening match of a RAW broadcast and on July 1, 2008, Umaga defeated Funaki in Tulsa during a Smackdown TV Taping. Oklafan extends its condolensces to Umaga?s friends and family during this time.
