MWA Does Some Spring Cleaning
With the latest installment of MWA action, fans were treated to not only a fantastic spring-like day, but also some excellent MWA action. With a list of talent waiting for their opportunity to debut with the MWA, four more stars got their chance, in the forms of El Famoso, "All Night" Matt Riviera, "The Eliminator" Jim Fallon, and Lars Manderson.
El Famoso (w/ Big Stevie Caballero) v. "The Eliminator" Jim Fallon
Caballero's newest talent acquisition from south of the border had one thing on his mind coming into Friday's event...elimination, which is easier said than done against Jim Fallon. Although Fallon had more than enough ability to beat his enormous opponent, but with the added fire power of Stevie Caballero in his corner, El Famoso was able to make "The Eliminator" numero uno on what will probably be a long list of those left in the wake of El Nino-like power.
Winner: El Famoso (w/Big Stevie Caballero)
"All Night" Matt Riviera v. Max McGuirk
McGuirk made his MWA return in a big way against the debuting Matt Riviera. Riviera utilized his excellent mat skills to ground the exciting third-generation superstar. However, Max was able to rebound, much like his great, late grandfather, Leroy McGuirk, on a night when Riviera must have decided to only work until lunch, as he couldn't take it to McGuirk the full match.
Winner: Max McGuirk
In a post-match interview, McGuirk stated that he was somewhat upset that he had not received the title shot that he earned, as it was turned into the triple-threat bullrope match, which current MWA heavyweight champion, Blake Albright, won. Though he was not "taking anything away from Blake," he would just like to have his opportunity at the MWA's top prize.
"Darling" Dustin Heritage (Southern Tag-Team Champion) v. El Super Colibri
With the conspicuous absence of Heritage's Jetsetter running mate, "Handsome" Jack Legacy, Colibri may have came into this match with a false sense of confidence. Though the Jetsetters work excellently as a team, the old adage states "the unit is only as strong as its weakest part," which is hard to determine in the Jetsetters. Trying to continue his stream of victories over the past few months, Colibri tried to best the man billed as "215 lbs. of man pretty," but he was unable to achieve his goal, despite hitting Heritage with the 9-1-8.
Winner: "Darling" Dustin Heritage
Lars Manderson v. "Broken Arrow Bad Boy" Justin Lee
The young, powerful Lars Manderson, who was debuting in place of the M.I.A Disco King, wasn't prepared for the sensational superstar from the BA. Though Manderson was able to land several power moves on Lee, Justin's resiliency kept allowing him to persevere, slam after slam. Several times, Manderson was quite close to getting, what may have been, the biggest victory in his young career, but a few too many mistakes allowed Lee to nail him with the superkick and go home with the victory.
Winner: "Broken Arrow Bad Boy" Justin Lee
Texas, Inc. ("Terrific" Tim Rockwell & Bernard Funk w/Big Stevie Caballero) v. Old School Express ("Space Cowboy" Jason Jones & "Big Country" Jake Boulder)
After February's impromptu brawl, no one knew what to expect when these four combatants entered the ring. The only thing that was going to happen for sure was a fight. Texas, Inc. was able to keep a distinct advantage over the Old School Express, as Jones was often distracted by the cunning Caballero (close, personal friend of my writing arch enemy, C. M. Burnham). Texas, Inc. appeared to be close to winning as Funk positioned Boulder for a shot to the skull by Rockwell with the Megallerophone (Stevie's megaphone). However, Boulder was able to duck at the last second causing Rockwell to hit his partner and uncle, Bernard Funk, allowing Boulder to get the victory for the Express. However, the celebration would be cut short when El Famoso came to the ring and helped Texas, Inc. destroy their adversaries.
Winners: Old School Express ("Space Cowboy" Jason Jones & "Big Country" Jake Boulder)
MWA Heavyweight Title Match
"Mr. Saturday Night" Michael Barry v. Blake Albright
Before the match, Director of Operations, Raymon Downey, presented MWA Heavyweight Champion, Blake Albright, with the new championship belt. The old belt, for those that don't remember, was destroyed by Blake in February...of course, that was only because Michael Barry gave him the Saturday Night Special, which drove Albright's face into the belt, reducing it to a mere piece of memorabilia. After a short celebration, it was time for Albright to extract some revenge. Wasting no time for his introduction, Albright went after Barry with a fury that I, personally, hadn't seen. (For those wondering, extra backstage security was needed to keep these two from destroying each other before the match). Albright controlled most of the match, until "Darling" Dustin Heritage came to ringside and distracted the referee, allowing Barry to hit Albright with a chain-wrapped fist. The rest was elementary as Barry easily got the three count...BUT, MWA senior referee, Jeremy Evans, found the foreign object and reversed the decision, giving Albright the victory. An attack by Barry and Heritage ensued afterwards, then Mike Iles, the voice of MWA, announced that Barry will face Max McGuirk in April, per orders of the championship committee, to determine the #1 contender for the MWA Heavyweight title.
Winner: Blake Albright (still MWA Heavyweight Champion)
Things are getting more intense by the second between Texas, Inc. and the Old School Express. Max McGuirk has another opportunity to prove himself worthy of a title shot, but can he get past Mr. Saturday Night? Come and see, on April 3, 2009...same bat time, same bat channel. I know I'll be there.
