The Scoop

NEWS
The billboard at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Friday night honored Sika Anoa’i.

For Google trends for the week, Saturday’s UFC 303 show was at 320,000 searches, which was more than anything else over the weekend. But that still would be a surprisingly low number for a major pay-per-view show. The only other thing that cracked the top 20 this week related to pro wrestling, MMA, or boxing was the death of Sika Anoa’i, which was #11 on Tuesday with 50,000 searches.

Greg Oliver of SLAM! Wrestling wrote a story entitled “Steiners’ story rushed through on A&E Biography”, which you can read by clicking here.

Oklafan congratulates The Oklahoma Strangler for surpassing 6 months as RDW Iron Man Champion. He defeated Tommy 2 Good, Adrian Vega, and Gun Metal Gray in a Fatal 4-Way Match for the vacant title on December 30, 2023 at an event in Tuttle.

Oklafan congratulates Cappuccino Jones for surpassing 6 months as CPW 918 Champion,. He defeated Red James for the title on January 5, 2024 at an event in Sand Springs.

Korttni Sadat announced on her Facebook that she has been diagnosed with cancer. Oklafan wishes her a speedy recovery.

Oklafan extends condolences to Ichiban [2nd] on the passing of his mother this past week.

Oklafan extends condolences to Wayne Black on the passing of his great-grandfather on July 1st.

Oklafan extends condolences to Mustafa bin Akbar on the passing of his mother on July 2nd.

Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of Louie Tillet, who passed away June 27th after a lengthy illness. He was 89 years old. Tillet was a smaller wrestler, only standing 5'9”. So he had to carefully pick territories that catered to junior heavyweights. After leaving Canada, he had success in Texas for a while until his inability to do promos convincingly forced him to leave. He came up to TSW in 1962 and had two runs here. The first one was arguably the most successful as he and Jan Madrid captured the NWA Southwest Tag Team Titles from Alex Perez & Gory Guerrero on March 29, 1962. Shortly after winning those, TSW rechristened them the TSW United States Tag Team Titles. Tillet & Madrid continued that reign until May 11, 1962 when they lost them to The Torres Brothers, Alberto & Ramon. Tillet stayed in TSW until early 1963, then returned to Texas for about 4 months before coming back to TSW in the summer, departing at the end of July to venture to the Pacific Northwest before once again coming back to Texas. In 1967, Tillet would unknowingly make the best decision for his career when he ventured to Florida and became the booker for Championship Wrestling from Florida. Together with Eddie Graham, he turned Florida into a hotbed of some of the most memorable angles and matches in pro wrestling. Amongst other things, he and Eddie brought in The Texas Outlaws, Dick Murdoch and Dusty Rhodes, from Detroit and saw great potential in Rhodes as a babyface. They also pushed Boris Malenko and Buddy Colt harder than anyone else had. Tillet also made a star of Jack Brisco, leading him to being NWA World Champion and was the first person to attach the word "Hulk" to Terry Bollea ("Hogan" would come later, thanks for Vince McMahon, Sr.). Tillet retired in 1982, but that didn't stop him from remaining busy. Outside of wrestling, Tillet was known as a great cook, buying 5 different restaurants and making them highly successful before selling them. He used the money from this to put his two daughters through university. At the time of this writing, Tillet was documented as competing on 29 Oklahoma wrestling cards. The earliest was January 22, 1962 in Tulsa for TSW where he lost to NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Danny Hodge. And the last was July 29, 1963, also in Tulsa for TSW, where he lost to Jerry Kozak in a 2-out-of-3 Falls Match.

Some of Louie Tillet’s contemporaries paid tribute to him on social media after his passing:

Jack Lord: “RIP, Louie Tillet. My trainer and mentor at the beginning of my career. He taught me the business side of our industry, as well as how to take care of myself in the ring. His guidance made all the difference in the success of my career. Rest easy, old friend.”

Les Thatcher: “So sad to hear that another dear friend & warrior has left us. Louie Tillet was a mentor, talented heel, creative booker, & one hell of a cook! I have faced him in the ring, wrestled for his booking and eaten at his table, & enjoyed his company! Go with God my friend & know that you will be remembered with Love & respect!“

Ron Fuller: “Another one's gone! Louie Tillet died on June 26, 2024 at 90 years old. He was an all around talent in the business. He booked for the Florida territory back in the early 1970's, and for me, in both Southeastern territories, Knoxville in 1976, and the Gulf Coast in 1979. He discovered Hulk Hogan in 1979 and used the great Samoan tag team of Afa and Sika. Sika just recently died himself. We are losing great ones, much to fast!”
