Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of Silento Rodriguez, who passed away April 7, 2024 at the age of 90. At the time of this writing, no cause of death had been announced. Rodriguez, whose real name was David Rodriguez, is famous for being one of the first deaf/mute wrestlers to achieve prominence. He lost his hearing at the age of 3 after diving off a cliff with his father. According to the story he told, he hit his head so hard that his parents thought he had a brain injury because blood was pouring out of his ears. They only realized it was hearing loss after he stopped responding to them when they talked to him. Nonetheless, Rodriguez still pursued an amateur wrestling career and eventually made the transition to professional in 1951. He actually met his wife, who was a pro wrestling fan, when he was thrown out of the ring and fell on top of her, bruising her ankle. Rodriguez would go on to become a notable regional competitor, mostly in the southern United States. His inability to cut promos or call spots in the ring limited his career, but nonetheless he was respected for his athleticism by many of his peers and would compete regularly for 25 years. During his time in Oklahoma, Rodriguez competed on 79 documented Oklahoma wrestling events. The earliest was a TSW event on September 11, 1961 in Tulsa, where he wrestled Torbellino Blanco to a draw. The last was a TSW event on August 23, 1976 in Tulsa where he defeated Ted Heath.
Greg Oliver of SLAM! Wrestling wrote a story on Silento Rodriguez’s passing which you can read by clicking here.
