Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of Killer Khan, who passed away December 29th due to a ruptured artery. He was 76 years old. Khan, whose real name was Masashi Ozawa, debuted in 1971 in Japan under his real name. He was given the Mongolian character and name “Killer Khan” by Karl Gotch upon returning to Japan after a tour of Canada. In 1980, he first entered the WWF and would challenge both Bob Backlund for the WWF World Title and Pedro Morales for the WWF Intercontinental Title. But it was a feud against Andre the Giant that would be what Khan was most remembered for. In May 1981, Khan delivered a knee drop off the top turnbuckle and it was reported that it broke Andre’s ankle. (In truth, Andre had broken the ankle himself getting out of bed one morning). Upon returning, Andre and Khan would have what many deemed the Feud of the Year in 1981. By 1982, Khan had left the WWF and made his way to MSW. On July 5, 1982, he defeated The Junkyard Dog for the vacant MSW Louisiana Title, but only held it about 6 weeks, losing it to Mike Sharpe, Jr. on August 18, 1982. He rebounded quickly from that and defeated Mr. Olympia for the MSW Mississippi Title on August 27, 1982, but again, only held that title for about a month, dropping it back to Olympia on September 28, 1982. Khan would spend most of 1982 - 1984 between MSWA and WCCW. In WCCW, he was introduced as an ally of The Fabulous Freebirds (Terry Gordy, Michael Hayes, & Buddy Roberts), specifically teaching Gordy the Oriental Spike. But Khan would eventually turn on Gordy, aligning himself with Skandor Akbar, as he had been in MSW, and began feuding with Gordy. Along the way, he substituted for Kelly Kiniski on May 7, 1984 in a WCCW Television Title defense and WCCW management declared him the champion. But like his other titles, the reign did not last long. He lost the belt to Kevin Von Erich by DQ on May 21, 1984, but Von Erich refused to accept the belt that way, and it was held up pending a rematch the following week. That match on May 28, 1984 resulted in a Double DQ and both men were then barred from competing for the vacant belt. Khan would eventually return to the WWF in 1987 for a brief run, but retired that year and returned to Japan where he managed a series of bars until his death. Khan will be remembered as a terrifying force in whatever territory he was in, especially given his size and character. At the time of this writing, Khan appeared on 11 documented Oklahoma cards. His earliest appearance was June 13, 1982 for MSW in Oklahoma City, where he lost to Ernie Ladd. And his last appearance was June 5, 1987 for WWF in Oklahoma City. His opponent was Ted DiBiase. But the result of the match is unknown.

WWE posted about the passing of Killer Khan: “WWE is saddened to learn that Masashi Ozawa, known to sports-entertainment fans as Killer Khan, passed away at age 76. The Japanese-born competitor was an imposing figure in the ring and highlighted his career with memorable rivalries against Legends such as Bob Backlund, Pedro Morales, Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan and more. After a brief return to WWE in 1987 with Mr. Fuji as his manager, Killer Khan would retire from sports-entertainment. Following his career in the ring, Ozawa owned a restaurant in Tokyo. WWE extends its condolences to Ozawa’s family, friends and fans.”

Michael Hayes also wrote about Khan's passing: “So sorry to hear of the passing of Killer Khan. What a great guy!! His epic battles with Terry Gordy in WCCW will live forever!!! Condolences, prayers for his family, friends and fans.”
