The original idea for Ric Flair's Wrestlemania run (as suggested by Steve Austin) would have included "The Nature Boy" wrestling on all three brands - Raw, Smackdown, and ECW.
At this point, Ric Flair is being considered for the main attraction for next year's WWE hall of fame. Mae Young's name has also surfaced as a possible inductee.
Ric Flair was #12 on Yahoo's buzz chart for top sports searches.
Ric Flair was mentioned in the New York Times Thursday, noting the star supporters of Mike Huckabee were Flair and Chuck Norris. The reference to Flair was snide saying, his name and saying , "Who I'm sure you all remember from his exciting triumph over Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat in the 1989 National Wrestling Alliance heavyweight title match.? Thursday's Charlotte Observer, in coverage of a Stevie Wonder concert in Charlotte on Tuesday night, noted Flair was there and dancing to Wonder's hits including doing his pro wrestling dance when he sang "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours."
On SportsCenter Friday, they were showing NASCAR Nextel Cup winner Jimmie Johnson's speech from the NASCAR awards where he mentioned his father and him. His father told him "to be the best, you have to beat the best." And afterwards one of the anchors said "If Jimmie Johnson's dad were Ric Flair he would say 'TO BE THE MAN, YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE MAN -- WOOO!".
Bill Goldberg recently stated in an interview that there is zero percent chance he would ever wrestle again.
There are currently no plans for Jeff Jarrett to return to television as a performer during the next few months.
There is no talk of TNA bringing back Junior Fatu. He didn't receive high marks for his backstage attitude.
The TNA booking team is still Jeff Jarrett, Vince Russo, and Dutch Mantel. Mike Tenay, Jeremy Borash, and Abyss sit in on the meetings and make suggestions.
Sting will be working the upcoming TNA Live Events in Mexico. If he doesn't resign with the company those could end up being his last dates with TNA. As of the weekend, there was no Sting update. Apparently he was telling people a few months ago that he wouldn't resign with TNA, but TNA still feels they can keep him in the fold.
Although not working for the company anymore, the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase will be having a book released under the WWE banner through their book deal with Simon & Schuster. Containing a total of 256 pages, this book titled 'Ted DiBiase' will be released in paperback format on June 10th of next year with a retail price of $16. Tom Caiazzo will be helping in writing this book. He worked on the Steve Williams book and also the upcoming Tito Santana books.
A match being considered for Wrestlemania 24 would pit women's champion Beth Phoenix against Candice Michelle.
During the Missouri-Oklahoma football game Saturday night, the game came back from a commercial and the camera showed Toby Keith and Jim Ross was sitting right next to him. Commentator Brett Mussburger said "There's Toby Keith in attendance". Then commentator Kirk Heiberstreet said "Isn't that wrassler announcer J. R. Ross?!?!" Also with about two mins left in the game, you could see Jim Ross standing maybe about 20 yards back of Bob Stoops, head coach of Oklahoma.
Several local wrestlers were making visits to shows this week. Dirty Harry Sanchez was spotted at the IZW show watching from the crowd. Sassy Merlot was backstage at the IZW show visiting friends and during intermission took pictures for Kenny Campbell, Dustin Heritage, and Michael Barry. After the show she was overheard speaking with IZW Commissioner Mike Iles about a possible comeback. Mitch W. Carter was seen visiting friends backstage at the ComPro show while Terry Montana was in the crowd watching the event.
80's wrestling star The Angel of Death was found dead in his hometown of Arlington, TX. The Angel of Death (Real name: Dave Sheldon) worked for many North American territories during the 1980s and early 1990s including Stampede Wrestling, World Class Championship Wrestling, and Bill Watts's Universal Wrestling Federation as the bodyguard of The Fabulous Freebirds. Sheldon was also part of the California-based Powerteam USA group, which included Sting, "Ultimate Warrior" Jim Hellwig and Mark Miller. He first started wrestling with Stampede Wrestling with Owen Hart, Brian Pillman, and Chris Benoit. He also spent time in WCW under a mask as 1/2 of the Russian Assassins as well as one of several of the imposter Black Scorpions. His only known title reign was on July 13, 1990, when he defeated Kerry Von Erich by forfeit for the USWA Texas Title. He would hold that title for a little over 4 months, losing it to Kevin Von Erich on Novemeber 23, 1990. In an odd bit of trivia, he was scheduled to be the next opponent for both Kerry Von Erich & Bruiser Brody prior to their deaths. Angel of Death has 3 documented Oklahoma appearances. On April 18, 1987, competing as Angel Mohammed while part of Skandar Akbar?s Devastation, Inc., he defeated Mike Reed at a UWF event in Muskogee. 3 months later, he was part of the last documented UWF event in Oklahoma City on July 11, 1987, where he teamed with Rick Steiner and Eddie Gilbert and lost to the trio of Dusty Rhodes, Chris Adams & Sting. Finally, on November 7, 1992, he fought Butch Reed to a Double DQ at a PZWA event in Tecumseh. Oklafan extends its sympathies to Sheldon?s family.
