NEWS
Fuego del Sol has become quite the internet wrestling darling over the past few months. The independent wrestling star recently took part in a "Reddit: Ask Me Anything (AMA)" and described his favorite moments when appearing on AEW programming, touting Q. T. Marshall as his best match. “The match with Q. T. Marshall. Not for the moves but more for the story. Everything we did was technically sound but that didn’t matter as much as the whole build up. For months we built up a match that was never supposed to happen. It showcases my personality and Q. T.’s asshole side so much so that it is launch his program with Cody. We were planning to do the match at the factory because we thought AEW had no interest in booking it, until Tony heard about the plan and said it had to be on dark! It meant so much to me because people cared. I hadn’t won a match in AEW and theoretically they had no reason to but we made them. We filmed that match for dark at 2 AM after we had already taped 20 dark matches and Q. T. and I both had already wrestled once that night, the extras and wrestlers were all tired but when the match happened they woke up, the signed wrestlers all came out to watch, so many of my peers cared and then the match was really good. So I feel like it delivered in every way possible… except that I lost… rematch maybe? Regardless it’s my favorite because I don’t think I ever had the opportunity to tell a long term story in wrestling and I realized those were the stories I want to tell!”

The security guard that Samoa Joe locked the Koquina Clutch on last week's NXT was Bronson Rechsteiner, the son of Rick Steiner.

Jinder Mahal made an appearance on "El Brunch de WWE" to discuss a wide range of topics. During it, Mahal talked about the Punjabi Prison match, which he once worked with Randy Orton during his WWE Title reign. “It’s a very vicious, brutal match,” Mahal stated. “The Punjabi Prison [laughs], hopefully, I don’t have to do it too many times in my career because going into the Punjabi Prison, you know you’re not going to be the same person when you leave. That match takes everything out of you. Great Khali was the creator of the match and then when I was in the Punjabi Prison, Great Khali surprised everyone and made his return. You know, I wouldn’t mind having Drew in the Punjabi Prison. Nowhere for him to run, he can’t go get steel chairs, and he can’t play mind games and destroy my motorcycle. It’ll be me and him locked in a cage and I’ll show Drew that I’m the better WWE Superstar, I’m the better WWE Champion, and I’m going to become WWE Champion again.” Mahal also made it known that he would like to wrestle Drew McIntyre in the bout at "SummerSlam". “The way it’s headed, I think it’s headed that way. Drew, obviously — he assaulted my lawyer, my poor lawyer had nothing to do with anything. Gave him the Claymore Kick for no reason. So, if it’s up to me, I finish Drew in the Punjabi Prison at 'SummerSlam'. I can’t think of a better place,” Mahal said.

Fightful Select and Wrestling Inc. jointly have reported that Ric Flair asked for his release from the company and that WWE granted it. Sources within WWE indicated that there was frustration building on Flair’s end with certain booking decisions.

Ric Flair last night in a super short statement that was missing the customary "we wish him luck in his future endeavors" sentence. The statement simply read, "We have come to terms on the release of Ric Flair as of today, 8/03/2021," suggesting that things did not end on a good note between the two parties. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer hinted that Flair didn't ask to be let go, but was fired after he complained about the booking involving his daughter. The 16-time champion signed a new WWE deal last year and said that while it was not a contract for life, he wished that WWE would renew it every time. This came on the heels of Flair handing over his trademark of "The Man" to WWE, a fight which Flair took public. Upon learning of the release, Sting - who shares a long history with the Nature Boy - tweeted a GIF of Flair chopping him and writing "Woooo!"

Ric Flair asked and was granted his release by the WWE. WWE made it official today and announced Flair’s release. It is being reported that Flair had been growing frustrated with WWE’s creative direction for himself and his daughter Charlotte Flair. word is this is what ultimately led to him asking for his release. According to a report from TMZ, Flair’s WWE departure wasn’t a sudden thing. The outlet reports that the situation has been “in the works” and they both recently agreed to a mutual parting of ways. We’re told the split has been in the works…and both sides ultimately came to an agreement recently. So if this report is true, it means that the release was more of both sides coming to an agreement, more than just Flair asking for his release and it being granted.

Ric Flair spoke with People Magazine last week and said he and WWE just didn’t see eye-to-eye on certain business opportunities, which is why he asked for his release. As noted, it was revealed earlier this week that WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon granted The Nature Boy his release after venting frustration and requesting the departure. Flair had just inked a new deal in 2020. WWE confirmed the departure this morning, and Flair then issued a statement, thanking the company and wishing them continued success. In an update, Flair spoke with People today and said the departure was done on friendly terms. “We just didn’t see eye to eye on some business opportunities that I wanted to pursue, so I asked for my release,” Flair said. “There has been no animosity and everything has been on friendly terms.” Flair dismissed any reports that say he messaged Vince over being frustrated with how daughter Charlotte Flair is booked by the company, noting that they are “absolutely not true.” “It happens sometimes in business; you just don’t see eye to eye,” Flair said. “But how could I have any animosity towards the company who made me who I am? They literally made me who I am. “Some of my best friends in the world work at the company. How could I possibly be upset with the company where my daughter is currently the most decorated woman’s wrestler in history?” Flair added that he left WWE to continue with his other business interests, including his own line of wine, a comic book, and an un-named network. “It was a mutually agreed-upon decision and I will be moving forward to pursue other exciting endeavors such as my own line of wine, my own network, as well as comic books,” he said. “I had to make this decision personally for my business and my brand.” Flair confirmed to TMZ that it was his request to be released from WWE, and he’s grateful it was granted. TMZ also said the split had been in the works for some time, and just recently did the two sides come to an agreement.

In a statement issued via social media, Ric Flair said that he's able to respond to all questions from the press related to his release from WWE. "I want to make it really clear with everyone that I'm not upset with WWE at all," Flair wrote. "They solely are responsible for putting me in the position of life that I'm in right now, where I'm seen in the brightest light ever." Flair added that he and WWE have a different vision for his future and he wishes them nothing but continued success. "Thank you for everything! Nothing but respect," Flair concluded.

Ric Flair was said to be under a “tremendous” Ambassador contract with WWE before being released earlier this week. As noted, Flair recently contacted WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon directly, and requested his release. That release was then granted this week. You can click here and here for Flair’s post-release statements, and click here for WWE’s announcement. In an update, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that The Nature Boy was earning significantly more money on his recent WWE Ambassador contract than he made even in his best years as World Heavyweight Champion in WCW. Flair signed that last contract in 2020. For what it’s worth, it was revealed several years ago that Flair had made a total of $1,954,313 over a period that included 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. That breaks down to $513,968 in 1996; $488,412 in 1997; $780,259 in 1998; $20,365 in 1999; $151,308 in 2000. It also breaks down to $1,881,586 in payroll; $72,018 in licensing; $709 in merchandise. Flair confirmed in his post-release statements that the relationship with WWE remains positive. It was noted that Flair likely will not speak out against WWE as he believes doing so could negatively impact the WWE career of daughter Charlotte Flair, and he won’t risk that. Flair denied some reports on his release, but multiple sources have reported that he did complain to McMahon about various booking decisions. There is no word yet on what Flair has planned for his pro wrestling career, but he’s noted that he left WWE to continue with his other business interests, including his own line of wine, a comic book, and an un-named network.

Mickie James posted on Twitter about WWE's release of Bray Wyatt: "I think what you meant to say was: “Thank you so much for coming up with such an incredible gimmick(time & time again)one so cool & over, we really didn’t know how to book it right. So we just gave it to someone else so we can still make ALL the money off of it & let you go”.

Jeff Jarrett spoke on his My World podcast about a wide range of topics. During it, he was asked about the narrative of TNA never being profitable and why it’s not true. “When we got the Spike deal, we became profitable that day, we will say that week. The investment that went in, we made it back. When you go from one to two hours, and you don’t double your expenses, so ‘07, ‘08, ‘09; ‘09 was the most profitable year by far. I received those owner checks. Kurt Angle was making great money. There were a lot of guys making really good money. OK, profit, in 2009, and that’s paying bills, paying investors back, and all kinds of things back, we made 8-10 million. It’s crazy to think back on that. Our investment, and I don’t want to get into hypotheticals and all that, but the Carter’s investment just wasn’t as rich as people seem to think. The Asylum days were about $100,000 a week. That’s what we were spending, so we were making some money. We didn’t go in that proverbial deep, dark hole that people, I guess, believe. It goes without saying, when we got the Spike deal, we became profitable that day.”

On the latest edition of his "My World With Jeff Jarrett" podcast WWE Hall of Famer Double-J spoke about a number of pro-wrestling related topics, including what he believes was the most rewarding moment of his career, and how he’s not itching to return to the ring but does hint at least wrestling one more match. Highlights are below. Says TNA going to two hours in primetime was very rewarding for his career: “When we had a celebratory meeting in New York City with Spike when we were going from one to two hours. That was more or less….I could remember going back to my room that night thinking here we are years later, and ‘we’re going out of business’ and all that chatter from year one to year two to year three. And then that summer where we weren’t on at all. That was a hell of a roller coaster ride, then we went one hour. Our first contract with Spike was Saturday nights off prime. We were on at 11 eastern. That’s not the greatest time slot. We weren’t there long because people immediately tuned into us, which was huge. But then we’re gonna go Thursday nights and still not put you in prime. We did that for a while and that was very successful. Then we went to primetime one hour. But when we want to primetime two hours and that was the trajectory, that’s up there. You talk about a what if had we continued on that path and things not transpired. That was very rewarding. Obviously, my match with Shawn Michaels was huge, my matches with Kurt Angle I remember with great fondness. The Ring Ka King experience was big. The UK tours with TNA and the profits with those. But going to two hours was huge.” Says fans have NOT seen his last match yet but he’s not itching to get back in the ring just yet: “I better stay on my side of the street here, but I have not put the wrestling boots on for the last time by any stretch of the imagination. When I hear guys, especially in their 30s, say ‘I’m retired’, well we’ll see. Somehow, some way, guys often get sucked back in. Do I have plans to put on the boots today, tomorrow, or the next day? No, but I can safely say you have not seen my last match. Do I have plans where it’s gonna be? No.”

Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of Jody Hamilton, best known as The Assassin, Assassin #1, or The Masked Assassin, who passed away August 3rd at the age of 82. At the time of this writing, no specific cause of death has been announced, but he had been placed in hospice care shortly before his death. Hamilton was the younger brother of The Missouri Mauler (Larry Hamilton), and while he demonstrated skill as an amateur boxer, chose to pursue pro wrestling as a career. He debuted in 1957 in a 40-minute match against Rip Hawk and soon started teaming with his brother in the Capitol Wrestling territory (the predecessor to the WWE, owned by Vince McMahon, Sr.). There, he became the youngest man to co-main event Madison Square Garden when, at the age of 19, he teamed with his brother against Antonino Rocca & Miguel Perez. After their time in New York ran out, Jody split from his brother and struck out on his own, competing in Amarillo, where he was given the nickname “Silent” Joe Hamilton, because he rarely spoke (he was not good at promos at the time). Hamilton split time between Amarillo and TSW in Oklahoma, making his debut in this state on March 7, 1960, losing a 2-out-of-3 falls match to Jack Donovan. Hamilton only stayed around for about 6 weeks, competing on 4 cards and only lodging 1 win, a 2-out-of-3 falls victory over Carlos Rodriguez. Hamilton went back to Amarillo and didnt return to TSW until January 1961. He still didnt have a very successful run, losing to stars like Sonny Myers, Mike Clancy, and TSW Oklahoma Champion Oni Wiki Wiki. His only recorded win during this time was in a tag team match, where on April 3, 1961, he teamed with Jack Donovan and beat Sonny Myers and Pepper Martin. This is ironic as he would go on to compete against Donovan a few times in this run, and on May 22nd, Donovan broke his collar bone during a match with Hamilton. Jack Curtis took over the match for Donovan and beat Hamilton. Hamilton finished up on June 5, 1961, losing to NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Danny Hodge. He then went to Florida and after his stint there, intended to return to Oklahoma, but instead, went to Georgia. This would be where the biggest change for Hamilton occurred. The plan was for him to go to Georgia and portray a character called “The Iron Russian”, but plans changed and when he got there, he became The Assassin. After a brief run as a singles wrestler, he teamed up with Tom Renesto, who also donned a mask as The Assassin and The Assassins tag team was born. For over a dozen years, Renesto & Hamilton would work all over the world as The Assassins (Except in the Carolinas, where Renesto had established himself as The Great Bolo, So Hamilton became The Mighty Bolo there). In 1966, The Assassins made their way into TSW and would stay for almost 2 full years as a team. On May 10, 1966, they defeated The Great Matsuda & Stan Kowalski for the vacant TSW United States Tag Team Titles. They would lose the belts to Jack Brisco & Eddie Sullivan on December 7, 1966, but regained them a week later, then lost them to Brisco & Haystacks Calhoun on December 31, 1966. The belts were vacated on February 3, 1967 for unknown reasons. The Assassins won the belts again, defeating Krusher Karlson & Skandar Akbar in a tournament final. The belts would be held up after a match against The Red Raiders on April 10, 1967, but the Assassins regain them in a rematch on April 21st. This final title reign for the pair is ended on May 8, 1967 when then lose the titles to Jack Brisco & Gorgeous George, Jr. At that point, Hamilton returned to Georgia Championship Wrestling, where he would stay for 4 years, the longest stay with a promotion for the team. While there, Renesto became more and more involved in the booking of the company and after Ray Gunkel died, Renesto followed his widow Ann to the formation of All-South Wrestling, a challenger to the NWA territory in the area. Renesto had to cut back on his duties in the ring, leaving Hamilton to once again venture into solo competition. This lead a big feud with Mr. Wrestling II, which saw Hamilton recruit several replacement Assassins, including Randy Colley, who would go on to be The Nightmare in MSW. By 1978, Hamilton was back in TSW. He formed a team with Ernie Ladd and they beat Ray Candy & Steven Little Bear for the TSW United States Tag Team Titles on April 5, 1978, but would only hold the belts for about two-and-a-half weeks before dropping them back to Candy & Little Bear. Hamilton would then recruit another competitor to be Assassin #2 and they beat Terry Latham & Ricky Fields for the TSW Louisiana Tag Team Titles on December 2nd, 1978. That title reign ended when The Assassin #2 left TSW, so Hamilton & Angel [1st] defeated Latham & Fields in a tournament final on January 6, 1979 for the Louisiana Tag Team Titles. On January 25, 1979, The Assassin would capture his final TSW United States Tag Team Title, teaming with the Angel [1st] and defeating Dusty Rhodes & The Spoiler when the Spoiler turned on Rhodes. Assassin & Angel held those titles for almost 6 months before losing them to Bill Watts & Buck Robley on July 21, 1979; the same team that had beaten Assassin & Angel for the Louisiana Tag Team Titles just 15 days earlier. Hamilton ventured up to the Central States area after this, but eventually made his way back to what had become Mid-South Wrestling where he brought in Hercules Hernandez, whom he presented as Assassin #3. By the mid-1980s, Hamilton had retired the gold-and-black mask and had donned a new identity, competing as The Flame in Memphis and teaming with a partner named Fire. In 1986, Hamilton began working at a company called Deep South Championship Wrestling, both as The Flame and behind the scenes. Sadly, in 1988, he was thrown from the top rope and landed incorrectly, breaking the lumbar vertebrae in his back. This forced his retirement from in-ring competition, though he would enter WCW as a manager, primarily guiding the career of Paul Orndorff through 1994. He also opened the Power Plant, the official training facility for WCW, and oversaw the development of stars such as Kevin Nash, Dallas Page, Bill Goldberg, & Paul Wight, just to name a few. When WCW was bought out by WWE, the Power Plant shut down, but in 2005, Hamilton, who had continued to train wrestlers, opened Deep South Wrestling as a developmental territory for WWE. It would be in operation from 2005 until April 19, 2007. Hamilton would go on to sue the WWE over how the relationship between it and Deep South ended. That suit was settled out of court, but the terms were not disclosed. In total, Hamilton competed on 138 documented cards in Oklahoma between March 7, 1960 and August 9, 1982.

WWE and the NWA have issued statements on the passing of “The Masked Assassin” Jody Hamilton. As noted, the legendary Hamilton passed away on Tuesday at the age of 82, right after entering hospice care. Hamilton’s son, former WCW/WWE referee Nick Patrick (Joe Hamilton Jr.) announced his father’s passing on Facebook. “It is with heavy heart that I make this post. At 2:16 today my father took his last breath on this earth. He passed comfortably, surrounded by the people that love him. Now our attention has to shift over to taking care of my mom. I want to thank everyone that sent out prayers and support for my family. I will put more information about pop out, but right now I’m kinda numb,” he wrote. The NWA remembered Hamilton as a legend whose legacy will live on forever. “Sending condolences today to the family and friends of The Assassin, Jody Hamilton. Truly a legend in this business whose legacy will live on forever,” the NWA wrote. WWE issued a lengthy statement to remember Hamilton, noting how he once ran the Deep South Wrestling promotion that operated as a WWE developmental territory. DSW operated as a WWE developmental territory until 2007, but shortly after that DSW ceased operations, and Hamilton filed a lawsuit against WWE over their working agreement for the developmental territory. The suit was settled out of court in early 2010, but terms were never revealed. You can read WWE’s full statement below: “The Assassin” Jody Hamilton passes away. WWE is saddened to learn that Jody Hamilton, known to fans as “The Assassin,” passed away at the age of 82. Following in the footsteps of his brother Larry “The Missouri Mauler,” Hamilton transitioned from amateur boxing and broke into the world of wrestling in the 1950s. By 1958, The Hamilton Brothers had risen up the ranks of the New York based Capitol Wrestling and battled Antonino Rocca and Miguel Pérez in the main event at Madison Square Garden. Just 19 years old at the time, Jody became the youngest grappler to ever co-main event at The World’s Most Famous Arena. Hamilton would go on to team with Tom Renesto to form the masked duo The Assassins and drew sellout crowds throughout the southeastern United States. The tandem became a force in Georgia Championship Wrestling and held the NWA Georgia Tag Team Titles a record-breaking 12 times. After Renesto’s retirement, Hamilton would carry on the torch of The Assassins with Ernie Ladd and then “Hercules” Hernandez and claim a collection of tag team championships in the Central States and Mid-South Wrestling Promotions. An injury forced Hamilton to step away from the ring, but with sports-entertainment in his blood, the veteran would blaze a new path with The Power Plant training center for WCW. Hamilton was instrumental in the development of legendary competitors such as Kevin Nash, Goldberg, Diamond Dallas Page and Big Show. Following WWE’s acquisition of WCW, Hamilton would continue teaching future Superstars with Deep South Wrestling. His son Nick continued the family tradition as a referee for Georgia Championship Wrestling, WCW and WWE. WWE extends its condolences to Hamilton’s family, friends and fans. Hamilton was inducted into the WCW Hall of Fame in 1994, and inducted into the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2013.

Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of Bobby Eaton, who passed away August 4th at the age of 62. At the time of this article, a cause of death had not been announced. Eaton, whose full name was Robert Lee Eaton, grew up as a fan of wrestling in Huntsville, Alabama and at the age of 13, began helping to set up rings for shows promoted by Nick Gulas. He would later be trained by Tojo Yamamoto and have his first match in May 1976, which he lost to Bearcat Wright. That match happened because Wright’s opponent for the evening did not show up. Eaton displayed impressive athleticism and showmanship in his early days and quickly entered into a feud with The Hollywood Blondes (Jerry Brown & Buddy Roberts), where he had several different partners. This cemented Eaton as a tag team competitor and he would go on to form a team known as the Jet Set with George Gulas. After a year of teaming with Gulas, Eaton struck out on his own, engaging in a particularly violent feud with Chris Colt. He would reunite with Gulas for one final run before NWA Mid-American shut down. Eaton briefly competed in Georgia in 1980 before moving back to Memphis, where he would stay for the next 3 years. Once again, Eaton found success in tag team ranks, forming a team with Koko Ware known as the New Wave. But in 1983, Eaton would get the biggest break of his career when he was part of a talent trade between Jerry Jarrett and Bill Watts. Watts put Eaton together with Dennis Condrey (whom Eaton had wrestled in NWA Mid-American) and gave them Jim Cornette as a manager, calling them The Midnight Express (a name that Condrey had used in a stable with Randy Rose & Norvell Austin, amongst others). This was also the point where Eaton gained the nickname “Beautiful”. Together, The Midnight Express defeated The Rock-N-Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) for the MSW Mid-South Tag Team Titles on May 23, 1983 in a No DQ Match. They would hold them for just over 2 months, losing them to Magnum T. A. & Jim Duggan on July 24, 1983 and would have to wait almost a year to regain them, beating T. A. & Mr. Wrestling II on March 13, 1984 for the titles in a match where the losers received 10 lashes from the winner. Mr. Wrestling II walked out on T. A. in this match, sacrificing his partner and the titles. Condrey & Eaton would remain champions through the summer of 1984 before finally losing the titles to The Rock-N-Roll Express on September 1, 1984. The Midnight Express would then venture down to WCCW where they would engage in a feud with The Fantastics (Tommy Rogers & Bobby Fulton) for the WCCW American Tag Team Titles, which they won on January 11, 1985. They held those belts for just under 4 months, losing them back to The Fantastics on May 6, 1985. At that point, frustrated by the payouts in WCCW, they left Dallas and went to the NWA, where they again engaged in a feud with the Rock-N-Roll Express, trading the NWA World Tag Team Titles with the duo. In 1987, Dennis Condrey abruptly left the team and was replaced by Stan Lane (whom Eaton had wrestled many times in Memphis). This pairing of The Midnight Express would also hold the NWA World Tag Team Titles as well as the NWA United States Tag Team Titles (and were the only pair to hold both titles simultaneously). Feuds with The Samoan SWAT Team (Fatu & Samu), The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes & Jimmy Garvin), and most notably, The Original Midnight Express, Dennis Condrey & Randy Rose, led by Paul E. Dangerously, were some of the standout moments for this pairing. Programs with The Dynamic Dudes (Shane Douglas & Johnny Ace) and Flyin’ Brian & The Z-Man were also in the cards to round out the 1980s, but after a loss at Halloween Havoc 1990, Cornette & Lane left WCW and Eaton stayed. Eaton now found himself as a singles competitor again and beat Arn Anderson for the WCW World Television Title. He got high profile matches with Anderson, Steve Austin (who eventually beat him for the TV Title), and even Ric Flair. Eaton would then become a member of The Dangerous Alliance, led by Paul E. Dangerously. He and Arn Anderson would form a partnership and win the WCW World Tag Team Titles. But the Alliance only lasted about a year, disintegrating after Sting forced Eaton to submit in a War Games Match. Eaton and Anderson, now managed by Michael Hayes, stuck around until Bill Watts took charge as the booker for WCW and Eaton was fired as a cost-cutting measure. Eaton would move to Smoky Mountain Wrestling, rejoining partner Stan Lane and his new partner Tom Prichard as The Heavenly Bodies. He would even win the SMW Television Title. But when Bill Watts was ousted from his position in WCW, Eaton returned to the company. He floundered at first, teaming with Chris Benoit and forming the tag team Bad Attitude with Steve Keirn. He also made tours of Japan and appearances in ECW in this time. But after Bad Attitude ended, Eaton ended up being turned into Earl Robert Eaton by Lord Steven Regal, Squire David Taylor, and Sir William as The Blue Bloods. They would feud with teams such as The Nasty Boys (Brian Knobbs & Jerry Sags), Harlem Heat (Booker T & Stevie Ray), and The Stud Stable (a stable managed by Col. Robert Parker), but would never capture the World Tag Team Titles. Eaton would finish out the 1990s in WCW and then move to the independents. He would reform The Midnight Express with both Dennis Condrey and Stan Lane and continued competing until 2012. His official retirement match occurred against Ricky Morton on October 23, 2015. Eaton had been plagued with health issues in the last decade of his life and even had a pacemaker inserted. He was considered by many people in the business as one of the nicest men in pro wrestling. The story goes that Bill Dundee forbade his daughter Donna from dating a wrestler, so when Bobby and Donna started dating, they kept it a secret from him, but when Dundee found out, he was OK with it because of Bobby’s “nice guy” reputation. Eaton competed on 33 documented Oklahoma wrestling cards. The earliest appearance was February 19, 1984 when he teamed with Dennis Condrey and, managed by Jim Cornette, went to a No-Contest against Mr. Wrestling II & Magnum T. A. In Tulsa. The last appearance was January 15, 2005, when he teamed with Dennis Condrey and, managed by Terri Runnels, lost to The Fantastics in a Steel Cage Match for the vacant SCW Southern Tag Team Titles.

The wrestling world woke up Thursday to the news that one half of the legendary Midnight Express, Bobby Eaton, passed away at the age of 62. Many of his peers and all four major wrestling promotions in the United States paid tribute to Eaton on social media during the day. "WWE is saddened to learn that Bobby Eaton passed away at the age of 62. WWE extends its condolences to Eaton’s family, friends and fans," WWE said in a statement along with a story on the website. "AEW joins the wrestling world in mourning the passing of a true legend and one of the greatest tag team wrestlers off all-time 'Beautiful' Bobby Eaton. Our thoughts are with his family, his friends and his fans," said AEW on Twitter. Impact Wrestling and the NWA also issued short statements on their social media. "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of 'Beautiful' Bobby Eaton - part of the legendary Midnight Express tag team. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his friends and family," said Impact, while the NWA wrote, "The National Wrestling Alliance is Saddened to hear about the passing of the legendary 'Beautiful' Bobby Eaton. We send our love to his friends and family. His impact & legacy will always be remembered." NXT General Manager and former tag team partner of Eaton, William Regal, described him as a dear friend, partner, travel buddy, teacher, and superbly skilled pro. "My deepest condolences to Taryn, Dillon & Dustin and family of Bobby Eaton who has passed away," Regal wrote. Arn Anderson, a man who shared the ring several times with Eaton, said he was woken up by his wife delivering the worst news possible. "The world lost its finest citizen. If there was a kinder, gentler person I would sure love to meet them. I could spend all day talking about how special he was in a wrestling ring. That's easy," Double A wrote. "What's hard is to do justice to the person he was. To his family thank you for sharing Bobby with the world. I will treasure the memories of him forever." The "Nature Boy" Ric Flair chimed in writing that he was so sad and sorry to hear about his close friend and one of the all time greats passing away. "Beautiful Bobby and The Midnight Express were one of the greatest tag teams in the history of the business! Rest In Peace!" Jim Ross called many of Eaton's matches and described him as a fabulous in-ring talent and a much better human outside the ring. "I was there when Bill Watts created the Midnight Express and will always cherish those times. RIP Beautiful Bobby," Ross wrote. Eric Bischoff, who was Eaton's boss down in WCW, said, "My heart goes out to the family, friends, and fans of Bobby Eaton. One of a kind talent whose skill in the ring made it look so real." Jerry "The King" Lawler wrote that he lost two great friends and wrestling legends in one day, Bert Prentice and Bobby Eaton. "No words...rest in peace my friends." Ricky Morton of The Rock N' Roll Express simply wrote that he loves Eaton and Michael P. S. Hayes of The Fabulous Freebirds wrote that he cannot begin to tell everyone how sorry he is to hear of Bobby Eaton’s passing. "Terry and I first met and worked with Bobby in 1978. What a tremendous worker and person! My condolences and prayers go out to his family, friends and fans." Lex Luger also worked with Eaton in WCW and said that Eaton not only was he a one of a kind wrestling talent, but a truly generous and gentle soul. "Prayers for his family. We will miss you Bobby and thanks for always having extra clean towels and stuff for all the boys." Gary Michael Cappetta, the longtime NWA and WCW ring announcer said that he was beyond sad to hear of Bobby's passing. "Everything you've heard is true - Bobby was kind, gentle caring and loyal. The sport has never known a more accomplished performer. My deepest sympathy to his family."

A GoFundMe was started for the family of Bobby Eaton to help cover the cost of his funeral. The response was so overwhelming, they closed it for donations at the 24 hour mark and the total was over $21,000 when it was closed.

Greg Oliver of SLAM! Wrestling wrote a story on Bobby Eaton's passing which you can read by clicking here.
