NEWS
“Dirty” Dutch Mantell, who was Zeb Colter in WWE, announced that he’s at work on another book: “Hello Facebook. Here I am again. What have I been up to? Writing another book hopefully to be out before Christmas. This one will cover a lot of things I didn’t have room for in the first 2. I’ll cover my going back to the WWE and managing Jack Swagger and how the wrestling business has changed since then and maybe not for the better. I don’t come here much but when I do, I like to spark conversation. So…here’s my question. Will wrestling ever be the same again? Personally speaking, I watch as little of wrestling as I can these days. It’s hard for me to get invested in it anymore. IMO, I think wrestling jumped the shark about 5 years ago and it’s never recovered. When I was in WWE, it was sellouts every night and Jack and I as the Real Americans had people standing when we entered the ring. But that was then, I’m talking now. Will wrestling ever return to its former glory.” He asked for readers to contribute their thoughts on his Facebook page.

Sting has fueled speculation with a recent post on Twitter that he could be itching for a match with the “retired” Undertaker.

Right before July 4th, the WWE Network has added ‘The Best of US Championship Matches’ collection. Matches include: Magnum T. A. vs. Tully Blanchard (I Quit/Steel Cage Match) from NWA Starrcade 1985, and Rick Rude vs. Sting from Clash of the Champions XXVII from 1994.

EC3 has posted a Facebook video under his new persona. In it, he makes numerous references to AEW.

The dubious distinction of the most searched for name on social media over the past week in pro wrestling, boxing, or MMA was Sammy Guevara with 200,000 on Monday. Guevara is the only name from any #SpeakingOut stories that got any traction at all mainstream.

On Twitter, AEW Executive Vice President Cody said that Sammy Guevara would be back and he would be a better person and better wrestler for what happened with his being suspended.

A few television and movie stars have banded together to create a Star Trek-themed comedy, all filmed at their homes. James McAvoy of X-Men, Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan of Outlander, and a handful of others have posted Star Force 2, a very campy and goofy short movie on YouTube. Although he honestly stands out as an odd member of the cast, Mick Foley plays a part and tweeted that it may be his “finest work”. You can view it by clicking here.

Oklafan congratulates Drake Gallows on his marriage on July 28th.

Oklafan extends condolences to the family of the late Brad Armstrong on the passing of his mother Gail this past week. She was the matriarch of the Armstrong family having been married to pro wrestler Bob Armstrong for 60 years. Bob and Gail had 4 sons that are or were involved in pro wrestling - the aforementioned Brad, Steve Armstrong, Scott Armstrong, and "Road Dogg" Jesse James.

Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of "Killer" Tim Brooks, who passed away from cancer at the age of 72 on June 30th. Brooks came from a wrestling family as his cousin was Dick Murdoch and his uncles Frankie Murdoch and Farmer Jones were pro wrestlers as well. But Brooks didn’t enter the sport until after he had spent time as a member of the military police, something he says prepared him well for pro wrestling. His first match was a 15-man Battle Royal and he then embarked on his career as Timmy Brooks, a clean-cut babyface who first came to prominence in the Detroit area, winning their version of the NWA World Tag Team Titles on 3 occasions. But this image didn’t sit well with Brooks and he eventually grew his hair our, grew a beard, and became the greasy, tattooed brawler that many people would remember as “Killer” Tim Brooks, (Though he would also utilize the nicknames “The Rebel” and “Hit Man”). Brooks would first become known on the Oklahoma circuit in 1974, when he competed for TSW. Brooks was involved in a couple of major angles in wrestling. In Portland, OR he and Roddy Piper were Pacific Northwest Tag Team Champions, but after losing those titles, Brooks turned on Piper, turning him face for the first time in the territory. More notably, in 1983, Brooks would win the NWA National Title and then sell it Larry Zbyskzo! This was 5 years before Andre the Giant did the same thing with Ted DiBiase, but the result was the same: the championship was declared vacant. Brooks’ biggest success came in Texas. In May of 1981, Brooks was awarded the WCCW Texas Title, which he held until sometime in September, 1981, when he lost it to Al Madrid. That same month, he would team up with Armand Hussein and defeat Madril & Brian Blair for the WCCW American Tag Team Titles, which they would possess until October 25, 1981 when they dropped them to Kerry Von Erich & Terry Orndorff. Brooks then spent time away from Texas, venturing to Georgia, Puerto Rico, Canada (Where he was billed as “Buster” Brody, the insane brother of Bruiser Brody), and other territories before returning to Texas in 1985. On June 10, 1985, he defeated Scott Casey for the WCCW Television Title. He would double his championship holdings on July 7, 1985 when he teamed with Mark Lewin & The One Man Gang to defeat Kerry & Kevin Von Erich in a Handicap Match for the WCCW World 6-Man Tag Team Titles. That “dual belt” status only lasted about a week as he lost the Television Title to Iceman King Parsons on July 15, 1985. And on September 2, 1985, Brooks, Lewis & The Gang lost the 6-Man Tag Team Titles to Kerry & Kevin Von Erich & Brian Adias. Brooks continued to wrestle in various places before slowing down in the early 1990s, but he still added one more title with an Oklahoma connection to it to his resume. Sometime in 1996, he defeated Red Eagle for the WWEmp Title, though he would only hold that title for a couple of weeks before losing it back to Eagle. Brooks would go on to open a training school in Waxahachie, TX and form the North American Wrestling Allegiance, where he spent most of the rest of his wrestling life, either competing or training. Brooks has a total of 16 documented Oklahoma matches. The earliest was November 24, 1974, when he lost to Sonny King at a TSW event in Tulsa. The last was April 13, 1995, when he lost to Al Perez at an NWA event in Lawton.
