Bud Guffey Shares His Thoughts On The Ryder Cup
Posted: Jun 22nd 2018 By: Bud Guffey
So, I would like to give my thoughts about the two-night Ryder Cup Memorial. In a word, it was amazing!!! I got to see some of my favorite veterans and some faces that I’ve not yet seen. I am glad that J.D. won the cup. He seems like a genuinely good dude.
It was great to see Canadian Red Devil and Draven. While Draven has a different (meaner) attitude since the last time I saw him wrestle, it was good to see him. It was also great to see Canadian Red Devil. I first saw him in November 2006 in Tahlequah at an event where I saw Tim Rockwell for one of the first times. CRD has been one of my favorites ever since. Tim has been to, when he’s not that horrible Villain, but I digress. Finally, it was good to see Dexter Hardaway back in the ring. I first saw him wrestle in 2003 at the Tulsa Indoor Fun Fair, and he’s been a favorite of mine since then. I could tell from that first match that he delivers.
Now, on to the fresh faces on the block. Luke Langley looked really impressive. It was the first time I had seen him in singles action. I enjoy seeing him wrestle. I’ve already said that Tommy Dean has the greatest hair in wrestling, but he also showed a lot of heart. That was an awesome somersault plancha over the top rope to the outside. It got a “WOW!” out of me.
Marce Lewis was a wrestler I had never seen before, and I hope to see him again in the area. He showed tremendous athleticism. Even though he lost the match, his display of skill was a win for both the fans and his future. Speaking of that match, it was also the first time I had gotten to see Malico. He’s creepy. But, he’s a skilled grappler. With the fear of clowns already being commonplace, he’s already got a psychological advantage. I think it’s only a matter of time before he has some hardware.
A couple of other guys that caught my eye are Dusty Gold and Lance Osborne. Osborne has really improved from the first time I saw him. He did a couple of things that I’ve, personally, not seen in 37 years of watching wrestling. One of the moves was a hangman’s piledriver. It was similar to Randy Orton’s hangman’s DDT, except with a piledriver. Dusty Gold has one of the more impressive physiques that I’ve seen in the Oklahoma territories since Max McGuirk or Jeff Starchild. With a few more years of wrestling, he’ll be the standard for a lot of aspects that make a great wrestler. By putting in the work, it wouldn’t surprise me to see these two gentlemen and/or Marce Lewis in NJPW, ROH, or maybe even amongst the ranks of NXT/WWE.
Finally, I’ll talk about Double D and Erica. While I don’t agree with their tactics, I will say that they are an impressive duo. They bring a new dynamic to the wrestler/valet pairing in pro wrestling. I would not doubt that Erica could compete in the Ryder Memorial Cup tournament herself. She was carrying Double D on her shoulders around the ring!!!
I would like to give one last shout out. This one goes out to Aerokid. Aerokid was adorable, and I thought the youngster is a nice addition to Space Age. I bet we see signs for Aerokid in the crowd real soon. There’s a good chance I’ll be holding one.
To Wrestling For A Cause: thank you SO much for what you all do. It’s absolutely incredible. I LOVED both days of the event, as I do every event. Thanks again for the contest, as it gave me the opportunity to attend. My lovely wife and I will be back soon. Until then...FIGHT LIKE A KID!!!
