A private memorial for "Rowdy" Roddy Piper will be held at The World Famous Comedy Store in Hollywood, CA on August 17th. This private memorial will include friends from all facets of Roddy Piper?s life and career including wrestling, acting, stand up comedy, live and broadcast TV, film, and numerous business and charitable ventures. His closest friends and colleagues in Los Angeles will share stories and experiences about Roddy over the years. ?The Comedy Store is the adopted home of so many ?comic orphans? and Roddy became like a dad or big brother to all of us. He became family. I wanted to have a get together where we could get up and share our favorite stories about this incredible man who we all love and will miss greatly. This is a night for Roddy?s friends to celebrate what a great friend he was to all of us,? said organizer and Roddy Piper friend, comic Steve Simeone. Piper?s daughter, actress Ariel Teal Toombs said that a lot of friends will appreciate something like this in the Los Angeles area since the funeral will be in Oregon and many won?t be able to make it. ?It means a lot that Steve and the Comedy Store family are putting this together,? she said.

WWE will be releasing a commemorative magazine on Roddy Piper that?s expected to go on sale August 31st. Triple H wrote the introduction and the magazine will have photos of matches and old Piper's Pits and tributes from various wrestlers. You can see the $9.99 tribute magazine at this link on WWE?s Shop website.

WWE Hall of Famer and former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura wrote that he has felt the loss of Rowdy Roddy Piper the whole week. ?I?ve felt the loss this whole week. I've got a bit of heartache, and Roddy is three years younger than me. He had a lot more to give the world to be taken from us at age 61,? Ventura wrote. He said Piper is one of the greatest of all time and a great asset to the world of professional wrestling. ?He loved the business and everything about it. There was no other job on the planet that Roddy Piper could have been better for,? Ventura said about his former colleague. ?I?ll remember Roddy as a guy who was willing to take a chance and put himself out there. When you took the handcuffs off Roddy, believe me, the handcuffs came off. We?re of the same vein: tell it like it is and stand up for yourself. People will come to see him as a cornerstone of the world of professional wrestling. He?s a legend and he always will be,? the man formerly known as ?The Body? concluded.

Dark Water Productions announced that a film with Roddy Piper called "The Reconciler" will be out in November. Piper plays a detective in the movie. There was also a movie he filmed called "The Masked Saint," that is set for a January release from the Ridgerock Entertainment Group.

BBC.com ran an article this past weekend asking why wrestlers often die so young, specifically naming Roddy Piper, Curt Hennig and The Ultimate Warrior. The article points to research done at the University of Eastern Michigan, where academic studies a group of 557 former pro wrestlers. Of the 62 wrestlers in the group who died between 1985 and 2011, 49 died before the age of 50, 24 of those 49 died before the age of 40, and 2 of them died before the age of 30. The study also found that mortality rates for wrestlers aged between 45 and 54 were 2.9 times greater than the rate for men in the wider United States population. From that group, cardiovascular disease was the most common cause of death. A WWE spokesperson issued this statement to BBC "Unfortunately, some past performers were part of a generation of wrestlers who made unhealthy and poor personal lifestyle choices, which in some cases continued beyond their years in the ring. Today?s athletes take great pride and personal responsibility for their overall health and well-being. Notwithstanding, WWE talent are subject to random drug testing and expected to live healthy lifestyles, reinforced through our Talent Wellness Program, which was instituted in 2006." Tommy Dreamer has said he has taken the last chokeslam of his career. The last chokeslam he took was on July 12th at Lone Star Championship Wrestling against Lance Hoyt. Dreamer wrote the following on his Facebook a few days after taking the move and explained why that?s the last one for him, "There comes a time in every person's life they say uggh im getting old. We can fight it as much as possible but it happens. It is harder to come to terms with many athletes that they are losing a step. Ironically I watched a story about Earl Campbell, the iconic running back for the Houston Oilers, whose punishing style made him famous. He has a myriad of back issues walks w/a walker from when the documentary was made. He said after he got traded, he had the toughest call to make & he called his wife & said I'm losing a step. It's time to retire. Well, on Sunday in Houston, Texas. I took my last ever chokeslam. This move was invented by Paul Heyman. He visualized it & gave it to a wrestler named 911. Well I took my share of them from him as well as from Brian Lee which made me famous for being crazy & extreme. I actually enjoyed taking them. I've taken them on chairs, concrete, a cinderblock, outside on someone's lawn. Into a trash can, into a dumpster, from the top of the ECW Arena, the top of steel cages, you name it I've taken them. Well I took this one on Sunday & I felt something weird. PAIN. & heard crunch. Wasn't Lance Hoyt's fault he placed me perfect. Im just 44 & after a 20min hardcore match my chokeslam bump card has expired. Going into my own company's largest show I'm hurt. I'm pissed at myself because when I'm performing in ring I'm still 25 years old, but my body reminded me I'm 44 w/a broken neck & back. So thank you Chokeslam we had a great relationship. I've taken them from 911, Brian Lee, The Undertaker, Kane, Test, Big Show and a few I probably forgot. I will heal, I will fight thru the pain but knowing my wrestling career is on the tail end of ending is the hardest part. No regrets, I got a few good matches left in me. Thanks for reading."
