The Scoop

NEWS
Reportedly, WWE does not currently have plans to use Sting at the August 23rd "SummerSlam" pay-per-view. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter confirms these reports. The original idea was to introduce Sting as a surprise about a week or two out from the show, likely as the mystery third partner in Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose vs. The Wyatt Family. Sting was told a while back that he would be on the show in a six-man tag match and he was even mentioned in a "SummerSlam" TV commercial that WWE had cut more than a week ago. The 56 year old Sting has reportedly gotten himself into ridiculously good shape for his age. At one point recently, Sting was informed that plans had changed and they would not be using him on the show. No word yet on what this means for the six-man match with Reigns, Ambrose, and The Wyatts but all elements of the original angle are still in place. WWE had the idea that Sting and Ambrose teaming with Reigns would maybe get a good reaction for Reigns in New York City, which is going to be a tough crowd for him.
The July 27th "WWE Monday Night RAW" in Oklahoma City reportedly drew 8,000 fans. The telecast drew an average of 3,671,000 viewers this week, down 133,000 viewers from the post-Battleground show last week. Hour one drew 3,421,000 viewers, followed by 3,754,000 in the second hour and then another increase to 3,839,000 in the third and final hour. The good thing from this week is that the audience increased by over 400,000 from hour one to hour three when usually it?s the other way round.
Former WWE Divas Champion and member of Team Bella, Alicia Fox, suffered a concussion at the "Monday Night RAW" telecast in Oklahoma City during the tag team match with Nikki Bella vs. Becky Lynch and Charlotte. The WWE.com website described the concussion as ?mild? but they did not elaborate on the injury or how long Fox will be out for. It has been a while since WWE acknowledged concussions on the website.
WWE Hall of Famer ?The Million Dollar Man? Ted DiBiase was backstage at last night?s RAW in San Jose, CA.
In what many believe is a last ditch effort to save their television deal with Destination America, TNA Wrestling kicked off an invasion storyline with Jeff Jarrett?s Global Force Wrestling during the latest "Impact Wrestling" television tapings at Universal Studios in Orlando, FL. Rumors are that Discovery Communications are ready to pull the plug on TNA once September hits due to the high costs not justifying the ratings. Meanwhile, Global Force Wrestling just did some television tapings of their own last week in Las Vegas, NV in hoping to get picked up by a network. With Jeff Jarrett back in a working relationship with TNA and Dixie Carter, the company decided to pull the trigger on the much talked about invasion rumor. TNA released several wrestlers from guaranteed contracts with GFW picking up the services of many of them. The two will be working together over the next set of tapings, tapings which are scheduled to air on Destination America in September. TNA has two more tapings scheduled. The next taping will be on September 17th in York, PA. The last time an invasion angle was done, back in 2001, saw WWE completely dropping the ball on potentially the biggest money-making angle in the history of the business with their own version of the WCW invasion failing big time with viewers.
Global Force Wrestling announced some names for its second GFW Amped TV tapings on August 21st in Las Vegas, NV. Among those announed were The Killer Elite Squad (Davey Boy Smith, Jr. & Lance Archer), The Bullet Club (Doc Gallows & Karl Anderson), Shelton Benjamin, Candice LeRae, and Eric Young.
Ric Flair told UFC Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey that everyone thinks the world of her in professional wrestling following her fight against Bethe Correia on Saturday. Addressing Rousey on Twitter, Flair said, ?@R_Roddy_Piper thought the world of you as we all do in our sport! Way to do justice to the Rowdy name! AWESOME! #andSTILL.? Rousey heads up the 4 Horsewomen of WMMA and is often seen flashing the 4 hand sign when she?s with her girls, an homage to Flair and one of the greatest stables ever. Rousey was always a big name among WWE Superstars and Divas especially since she loves and respects professional wrestling a lot however the admiration towards her increased after she participated at WrestleMania 31 to create one of the most memorable WrestleMania moments with The Rock, Triple H, and Stephanie McMahon.
At the "Mid Atlantic Fan Fest" on Saturday, Ricky Steamboat & Jim Ross were talking about the Flair-Steamboat feud. Steamboat said that he didn't know he was getting the title in Chicago, IL until the day of the show. Jim Ross said he found out right before the show.

Oklafan congratulates Jerry Bostic who recently surpassed one year as IWR Heavyweight Champion. He defeated Ky-Ote, Christopher Cambridge, and Griffin in a 4-Way TLC Match to become the inaugural champion on August 3, 2014 in Ardmore at IWR's first event.
Oklafan extends condolences to Roc-N-Roll Cowboy, who's brother Stephen passed away on July 29th.
Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of "Rowdy" Roddy Piper who passed away on July 31st at the age of 61. He suffered a cardiac arrest in his sleep at his Hollywood home. He was born Roderick George Toombs in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on April 17, 1954 and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After being expelled from junior high and having a falling out with his father, Piper left home and stayed in youth hostels wherever he could find them and picked up odd jobs at local gyms running errands for several pro wrestlers. Also as a young man, he became proficient in playing the bagpipes, though he has repeatedly stated that he is unsure exactly where he picked them up. By the age of 15, he made his pro debut in Winnipeg, against Larry Hennig. When Roddy made his way to the ring playing the bagpipes the ring-announcer introduced him as "Roddy the Piper", the fans in attendance heard it as "Roddy Piper" and the name stuck. From 1973 to 1975, Piper wrestled in the AWA, in Kansas City, through the Maritimes in Canada, and in Texas for the NWA in Houston and Dallas. When he made his way to California, the bookers were impressed with Piper and saw money making possibilities with Piper as a villain. While in the NWA, Piper was the top villain throughout the country in every territory he entered. His time in WWF was as much instrumental in the company's nationwide explosion as Hulk Hogan as Piper was the perfect villain for Hogan. His interview segment "Piper's Pit" helped create feuds for Piper, and according to Piper's autobiography, "Piper's Pit" was completely unscripted. In 1985, Piper faced Hogan at "The War to Settle the Score" on MTV. That match setup the main event at the very first "WrestleMania", Piper and Paul Orndorff vs. Hogan and Mr. T. At "WrestleMania II", he faced Mr. T in a boxing match. During his career he held 18 singles titles and 17 tag team titles including the NWA Television Title (twice), the NWA United States Heavyweight Title (3 times), the WWF Intercontinental Title, and the WWE World Tag Team Titles. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005 and was named one of the top 50 villains in the history of the WWE. Outside of wrestling, Piper starred in several movies, including "They Live" which is still popular among sci-fi fans. Piper had been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2006, but last November he said he was cancer free. A family source reported that Piper was cancer free at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife Kitty and their 4 kids -- including 3 daughters and son Colton who is pursuing a career in professional wrestling.
The family of Rowdy Roddy Piper posted a small statement on Piper?s Facebook page which has been flooded with condolences from fans around the world. ?Our family is saddened by the sudden passing of our father and beloved husband, Roderick Toombs aka Rowdy Roddy Piper. Please respect our family?s privacy during this difficult period,? the statement read.
UFC Women?s Bantamweight Champion ?Rowdy? Ronda Rousey did not disappoint Saturday night and made the WWE Hall of Famer Roddy Piper proud after finishing off the undefeated Bethe Correia in 34 seconds. In her post-fight interview inside the Octagon, Rousey mentioned Hot Rod after she dedicated the fight to him the day before. ?I just wanna say we lost a really close friend, Rowdy Roddy Piper, who gave me permission to use his name as a fighter and so I hope he and my dad had a good time watching this today,? she told Joe Rogan. Also during her interview on FOX Sports with Ariel Helwani, Rousey revealed that she spoke to Piper for a couple of hours earlier this week talking about this fight and told him that she?s going to beat Correia and do his name proud.
Oakland Athletics outfielder Josh Reddick used bagpipe music each time he walked to the plate on July 31st to pay homage to Roddy Piper.
After Roddy Piper's passing, pop singer Cyndi Lauper who feuded with Piper in the 80's, posted on Twitter "I am so sad to tweet that my friend Roddy Piper passed away last night. He was really such a sweet man. My heart is with his family."
There has been a ton of mainstream coverage of the death of Roddy Piper. That's not surprising, but some of it is, like Piper's death being the cover story in the Boston Herald. The BBC covered it as the third biggest story in world news.
Bret ?Hitman? Hart wrote a very touching tribute to his dear friend Roddy Piper on his Instagram following the news of his death. ?I can?t find the words to describe the sorrow in my heart upon learning the news of my dear friend, Roddy Piper, passing away. He was my closest friend in the business, a man that schooled me and guided me throughout my career,? Hart said. Bret credited Piper for helping him and preventing him from being just a ?mere footnote? in wrestling as he was always there for him. ?He was family to me, a brother who loved me and was there for me through my darkest days. He was the only wrestler to come visit me when I suffered a stroke in 2002,? the Hall of Famer added. Bret recounted how Piper ?totally made him? at WrestleMania VIII during their classic match for the Intercontinental title, passing the torch that many others in that era couldn?t conceive of doing. ?I loved you Roddy, and I?ll miss you and your laugh for the rest of my days. I?m stunned and the hole in my heart will widen as it sinks in that I lost a brother of such great worth. What a tragic loss to all that knew him.?
As expected, all major media outlets and those who don?t usually cover professional wrestling, covered the untimely death of WWE Hall of Famer Rowdy Roddy Piper, including MMA websites due to the connection of his nickname with Ronda Rousey. CNN, Washington Post, Esquire, ESPN, Entertainment Weekly, FOX Sports, CBS Sports, Yahoo! News, The Associated Press, BBC, The Guardian, and more. In many of these websites, the Piper story was one of the most read stories for the day.
The funeral services for Rowdy Roddy Piper will be held on August 12th in Portland, OR. WWE happens to be in Portland for a Smackdown taping on August 11th and the funeral service most likely was delayed to allow anyone working the show to remain in Portland for an extra day to attend the service. Wednesday is typically a day off for WWE Superstars and Divas. [url=http://www.PWInsider.com[/url] adds that Piper will be laid to rest in Portland as well. Piper and his family lived in Hillsboro, OR for a long time.
Madison Square Garden has honored WWE Hall of Famer Rowdy Roddy Piper by putting his image on the electronic board on top of MSG?s entrance. ?RIP Rowdy Roddy Piper - One of the all-time great performers at Madison Square Garden,? read the message on the board accompanying the picture of Piper wearing the Hot Rod WWE t-shirt. The image was posted on MSG?s Twitter account saying that Piper was ?a friend to us all,? and ?you will be missed.? Piper wrestled at Madison Square Garden countless times during his WWE career and was an integral part of the main event of the first ever WrestleMania. To see the touching tribute, go to here.
They shot a ton of interviews with talent regarding Roddy Piper, although I'm not sure if it's for the show tonight or something else but I would expect a major presence of Piper footage and talk tonight. As everyone has noted, it will be an interesting game to talk about Piper's career highlights while avoiding footage of Hulk Hogan, so we'll see how it goes.
