WWE Survivor Series 2012: Team Foley vs. Team Punk Needs to Be Winner-Take-All

Team Foley vs. Team Punk in a traditional Survivor Series match is set for the upcoming WWE Survivor Series pay-per-view.

Mick Foley?s team is made up of Ryback, Randy Orton, Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston and WWE Tag Team Champions Team Hell No. WWE Champion CM Punk?s team consists of him, Alberto del Rio, Miz and Team Rhodes Scholars.

With all this talent condensed into one match, this match is sure to make an excellent main event.

The only question is what happens to the WWE, Intercontinental and Tag Team Championships? Is it possible that those titles won?t be defended at one of the WWE?s biggest PPVs of the year?

One has to wonder if the name value and feuds within this match are enough for the WWE to rely on to sell such a big event. Yes, the dynamic between Punk, Foley and Ryback is enough to give the match a main event feel.

Beyond that, each participant in the match needs to have something to fight for. Each individual feud within the traditional elimination tag team match needs to be addressed in a compelling manner. That said, each champion in the match needs to be defending his title.

Let?s say that Team Punk is victorious. If every champion?s title is on the line, then Punk retains the WWE Championship, Miz wins the Intercontinental Championship and Rhodes Scholars wins the WWE Tag Team Championships. The right to challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship can be on the line for Del Rio and Orton, too.

With something for each participant to fight for, no one will get lost in the shuffle. It?s a sure fire way to make sure the match isn?t all about Punk and Ryback and everyone else is secondary.

This scenario works perfectly for Team Punk. With the Royal Rumble fast approaching, it?s becoming more likely that Punk will defend the WWE Championship against The Rock.

Unless they?re planning Ryback vs. The Rock, having Ryback win the title with only one PPV to drop the title before the Royal Rumble would do more harm than good.

Everything else for Team Punk lines up perfectly.

First, let?s look at the Kingston vs. Miz feud within this match. Pitting them against each other in this match is an obvious indication that this feud is meant to continue despite Kingston?s clean retention at Hell in a Cell.

There are two possible scenarios for Miz. Miz could either eliminate anyone other than Kingston or no one at all. Either way, should Team Punk win, Miz would become Intercontinental Champion without pinning Kingston. It would give Miz bragging rights and lead to a rematch for Kingston, allowing the feud to continue.

The Rhodes Scholars should actually have an impressive outing. They should show off their tag team prowess and eliminate at least one member of Hell No. In the end, they?d get demolished by Ryback. Rhodes and Sandow won?t lose much because it?s Ryback. In addition, two quick eliminations would truly make Ryback look unstoppable.

The ongoing feud between Orton and Del Rio is simple. ?The Mexican Aristocrat? needs to get back at ?The Viper? whenever possible in the weeks leading to Survivor Series. Del Rio could end up eliminating Orton in some questionable fashion. That would lead to a rematch between the two in which Orton would decisively win No. 1 contendership for the World Heavyweight Championship.

The WWE Championship is a tricky situation. One possible route is for Punk to go through the match without letting Ryback touch him. It will probably require a team effort to eliminate Ryback, but the anticipation for a singles meeting between the two would be monumental.

This wouldn?t be the first time championships were defended in tag team situations. Backlash 2009 saw WWE Champion Triple H defend his title in a six-man tag team match against Legacy.

In addition, SummerSlam 2008 saw the team of Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix defeat Kofi Kingston and Mickie James to become the new Intercontinental and WWE Women?s Champions, respectively.

Adding such high stakes to the match will make it significant from top to bottom. It will make it feel more like a big PPV main event and less like a main event program diluted by a collection of midcard feuds.

Furthermore, it will help build the match over the coming weeks. Finally, come Survivor Series, the fans will be on the edge of their seats for the entire match.

Team Foley vs. Team Punk at Survivor Series needs to be winner takes all.
