WWE Over the Limit 2012: Why Beth Phoenix Must Regain Divas Championship
Posted: May 18th 2012 By: mikeiles
Beth Phoenix dropped the WWE Divas Championship to Nikki Bella on Raw a couple weeks ago, ending a reign of more than 200 days. Now that she's back in action after a storyline ankle injury, it's time for her to regain the title.
Phoenix will face off with current champion Layla, who made a surprise return at Extreme Rules and defeated Bella to take control of the belt. Even though she's been pretty impressive since coming back, Layla still isn't on the same level as the "Glamazon."
The Divas division has already been viewed as a second-tier portion of the shows because they don't get much television time to build characters and advance feuds. It doesn't have to be that way, of course, but the WWE hasn't made an effort to make it more important.
Even in that limited amount of time, Phoenix has separated herself from the pack as the best pure wrestler among the Divas.
The only match that would actually make the WWE Universe care about division would be Phoenix taking on Kharma, who has been off weekly television since last May. She did make an appearance at Royal Rumble, but nothing else.
It appears her return should be happening soon, however. Justin LaBar of WrestleZone.com passes along a report that says she's ready for action whenever the WWE can find a storyline for her.
While it's too bad she wasn't ready in time to write the Bella Twins off television after their brief encounter last year, getting her back will provide a nice boost nevertheless. She was on track to become a dominant force before leaving due to her pregnancy.
The best way to handle her return would be to have Phoenix win the Divas title back on Sunday night followed by a battle royal on Raw to become the No. 1 contender. After all the other participants in the ring and the match looks ready to begin, have Kharma come out and clean house.
That would set up an extended storyline between Kharma and Phoenix that should run all the way through SummerSlam. Keeping her off television any longer would be a waste of valuable build time.
Even though the Divas division will never become a top attraction for the WWE, at least a feud between the two best female superstars would make it matter for awhile.
To make it happen, Phoenix has to win the title back to set the wheels in motion. So that's what should happen at Over the Limit.
