Albright Gone, Barry and Starchild Getting Along?

Well, I have finally made it back to the MWA. I have been gone for several months covering the recent elections across our great nation, and the following transitions into office. I am also working on a different format for the column, which will begin with this column. Let's get on to the action.

The January event began with a familiar face, however, it was the first time it had been seen unmasked. "Prime Time" Brandon Walker, who used to be known as El Super Colibri, returned to the MWA, but this time he had a different attitude and no mask. He squared off against his former friend from the north, Canadian Red Devil. The fans were treated to exactly what they had expected as both men utilized technical wrestling skill combined with quick, high-flying action. Much to the surprise of this journalist, the crowd seemed to be split, as half of the crowd cheered for CRD and half of the crowd cheered for Walker despite his lack of appreciation for the fans. Despite being a former MWA Max-Division champion, Walker did not prevail as a champion often does, as he lost the bout to the Canadian Red Devil. I'm sure Walker regretted bringing his video camera to the ring to film his loss.

Speaking of MWA Max-Division champions, the current champion, "Darling' Dustin Heritage came to the ring to remind the crowd that Blake Albright's career was on the line in their match tonight. Albright didn't appreciate the comments, so he went to the ring to confront the arrogant champion. The two combatants were close to beginning the match, but MWA Director of Operations, "Smokin'" Bud Guffey declared that both men would be fired, if they did not wait until the main event. He, then, told Heritage that Excellence Personified, including Mike Iles, would be banned from ringside for the main event.

The MWA fans were also treated to another return, as New York native, Bobby V, returned to the MWA ring. He would be facing a relative new comer to the MWA in the form of Richie Adams. Bobby V took the fight directly to Richie Adams lighting his chest up with several stiff chops. Bobby V also showed his excellent submission skills, as he was able to make Adams tap out to gain the victory. Bobby V, who dubs himself as the Pure Wrestler, showed another dimension to his wrestling expertise, as he did not rely on his high-flying skills as much as possible. However, he proved victorious and he also proved that he is quite versatile in the squared circle.

"Big" Stevie Caballero came to the ring with Foreign Legion member "Dirty" Dutch Hagen. Apparently, the duo have severed their ties with the "Minsk Manhandler" Boris Saarikoski, as Caballero felt that the Russian was the reason he got injured over the past couple of months. The only problem is that there was an opening in the tag-team champions. However, Caballero quickly solved the problem, naming former Gentlemen Thug, Joe Cothern, as the newest member of the Foreign Legion and new tag-team champion.

In an effort to name a new #1 contender to the MWA Heavyweight title, the MWA pitted "Terrific" Tim Rockwell in a triple-threat match against "The Human Action Figure" Jeff Starchild and "Mr. Saturday Night" Michael Barry. All three of these men have been former champions, and it will only be a matter of time before one of them hoists the title in the air again. Barry's EP comrade, "Handsome" Jack Legacy, is the current MWA Heavyweight champion, but the two men have been having problems in recent months. All three men in this match brought their A-game to the ring. Starchild dazzled the crowd with a suicide dive over the top rope onto Barry and Rockwell. Despite their best efforts, Starchild and Rockwell could not overcome the crafty veteran, and now, Michael Barry is the new #1 contender to the MWA Heavyweight title. In an odd moment after the match, Starchild and Barry, who have had their share of differences in the past showed mutual respect to each other, as they shook hands and embraced in the center of the ring. One can only speculate what the other members of Excellence Personified will have to say about Barry's victory and his actions following the match. My guess is that Mike Iles will not be pleased, nor will "Handsome" Jack Legacy.

Continuing with odd occurrences, "Space Cowboy" Jason Jones and former rival, Bernard Funk, teamed up to make a run for the MWA tag-team championship. The duo had an advantage as the new version of the Foreign Legion had little to no chemistry as a tag-team. However, that advantage fell to the wayside, as Jones and Funk not only lacked chemistry, but they used to be bitter rivals. The odd couple of Jones and Funk were doing well until Funk's nephew, Tim Rockwell, served as a distraction. Funk chased Rockwell through the crowd and into the locker room, giving the Foreign Legion a two-on-one advantage. The Foreign Legion continue their reign as MWA tag-team champions, despite the change in personnel.

Finally, the time had come for the main event. Would Dustin Heritage remain the Max-Division champion or would the MWA fans be seeing the last of Blake Albright. Regardless of the outcome, the fans were sure to see an absolutely classic match-up. Heritage usually overwhelms his opponents with a quickness advantage, but Albright is equally as quick as the champion. Similar to their match in September 2010, the time limit expired before a winner could be declared. Heritage was waving good-bye to Albright and walking up the ramp, however, he ran into MWA D.O.O. Guffey, whom added 5 minutes to the match. Reluctantly, Heritage went back to the ring, and much to the dismay of the fans, he came out victorious, when Albright passed out due to pain. As per the stipulation of the match, Blake Albright is no longer employed by the Maximum Wrestling Alliance.

Be sure to make the drive to Grove, OK on February 5, as the Maximum Wrestling Alliance makes their debut in Grove at the Grove Civic Center!

That's my two-cents worth,
J. Wayne McGillicutty
