Two Cents Worth

Two Cents Worth

Posted: Oct 12th 2008 By: mikeiles

Maximum Wrestling Alliance's October 10 show turned out to be more than what some expected. First of all, there were some special guests in the crowd. I'm referring to both former WWF (now WWE) announcer, Mike McGuirk, and Oklahoma wrestling legend, Chief Red Eagle. The MWA staff and talent were excited and honored to have these two stars on hand. If you've not had a chance to meet either, they are as classy as they come.

Also, I thought I spotted a distant cousin to the sasquatch from Harry and the Hendersons, but on second glance I noticed it was C. M. Burnham...with a thicker beard and mullet? Who would have thought that.

The evening started off with a tag team match that set the pace for an action packed evening. "Handsome" Jack Legacy and "Mr. Saturday Night" Michael Barry, whose alliance may have started at the September MWA show when they done a number on Blake Albright, were set to face against the very popular team of the Canadian Red Devil and El Super Colibri. Although the duo of Legacy and Barry had the power and experience advantage, they had a difficult time getting the victory over the masked duo. However, Barry served up a Saturday Night Special one night early, and the rest was history, as the adage goes.

Winners: "Handsome" Jack Legacy & "Mr. Saturday Night" Michael Barry

The next match saw half of the continuation from the fued between the Gentlemen Thugs and the Old School Express. The always intense Cast-Iron Cothern (with Shane Morbid by his side) took on the OSE high flyer, Jake Boulder. Before the referee could call for the opening bell, Cothern took the advantage by attacking Boulder while he was trying to get his jacket off. Boulder was able to mount a brief comeback that began with a spectacular flying dropkick, but Cothern was able to get the victory in the end.

Winner: Cast-Iron Cothern

The third match of the night saw the MWA debut of both the "Disco King" Trey Christian and third-generation wrestling sensation, Max McGuirk. Disco King's dancing, music, entrance, and wrestling attire all leave something to be desired, but you can't deny that the guy can wrestle. McGuirk came to the ring with a purpose, and that was to make his MWA debut a successful one. He done just that by disposing of the hip-shaking nit wit that happened to be his opponent that evening. It was a very impressive debut for the young upstart.

Winner: Max McGuirk

"Mr. Endurance" Sugar Shane Morbid and "Space Cowboy" Jason Jones picked up right where Cothern and Boulder left off. Cothern returned Morbid's earlier gesture of accompanying him to the ring, so without Boulder by his side, Jones had a pretty formidable task in front of him. Taking nothing away from any other wrestlers out there, but I feel that Shane Morbid is one guy on the wrestling scene that is pretty under-rated. With that being said, his choice to use a foreign object in his match with Jones makes me wonder if Morbid doubts his own talent. Also, it cost him the match. After getting the victory initially, Jake Boulder brought a second referee to the ring with him, pointed out the foreign object to the match official, and the decision was reversed, giving the victory to the "Space Cowboy" Jason Jones. Afterwards, Old School Express challenged the Gentlemen Thugs to a no-holds-barred, bring-what-you-want, come dressed-as-you-are, bunkhouse brawl. Of course, Jones and Boulder called it the Old School Butt Whoopin' Match. The Gentlemen Thugs accepted, which set up the main event for MWA's November 7 show.

Winner: "Space Cowboy" Jason Jones

Finally, the time came when Blake Albright would have a chance to get some form of revenge on "Terrific" Tim Rockwell, which had probably been weighing on his mind since Rockwell's questionable victory in the MWA title tournament finals. Rockwell, who berated the fans earlier in the evening in an interview with Mike Iles, should not have been surprised when the fans were excited to see Albright get his hands on Rockwell. These two men put on a 20-minute clinic, which not only kept the fans enthralled by all of the action, but took this feud to a new level of intensity. Both men battled back and forth for the entire 20 minutes. However, Albright was able to get the Fujiwara armbar on Rockwell, and just before the champ submitted the bell rang. People thought that Albright had won the MWA championship, but in contrast, Rockwell was saved by the bell...the time limit expired. Exhausted and frustrated, Albright left the ring so close to winning a championship, yet so far away.

Time-Limit Draw

The main event was a 12-man, over-the-top-rope Battle Royal, with the winner being named the number one contender for the MWA heavyweight title. Rockwell, who had entered himself in the Battle Royal earlier in the night, was the first one to be eliminated, as every person in the Battle (except for Legacy and Barry), threw him out. Shortly after, Albright (who must have been wearing rocket shoes) leapt over the top rope, eliminating himself, but giving himself the chance to beat Rockwell all the way to the dressing room. Sources say, this fight went on out to the parking area for the wrestlers, but those rumors haven't been confirmed yet. One-by-one, the wrestlers were eliminated, until it was down to Legacy, Barry, and McGuirk. Legacy and Barry tried to double team the young star, but it back fired, as Barry accidentally eliminated Legacy, which in turn got himself eliminated by McGuirk. Max McGuirk made it 2-for-2 on his debut night, and became the new #1 contender for the MWA heavyweight title.

Winner and new #1 contender: Max McGuirk

The next MWA show will be November 7, 2008 in Spavinaw, OK at the Spavinaw Gym, 100 Lake Avenue. Tickets are $5.00 each and kids 5 & under get in free. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and bell time is 8:00 p.m. Be there or be square. Well, that's just my two cents worth. Have a great Halloween.

Until I can dig up some more change,
J.W. McGillicutty
