NEWS
Edge and Beth Phoenix are now expected to return to the WWE storylines. We noted before how WWE is bringing Edge to Monday’s "SummerSlam" go-home edition of RAW from Madison Square Garden in New York City. While he has not been confirmed for the RAW broadcast, WWE is bringing him to the show. It’s rumored that Edge will return to resume his feud with Damian Priest and Finn Balor of The Judgment Day, who will be facing The Mysterios (Rey Mysterio & Dominik Mysterio) on RAW, and who have promised to crash Rey’s 20th anniversary celebration. In an update, a new report from PWInsider notes that WWE is also bringing Phoenix to Monday’s RAW. Furthermore, Edge and Beth are also booked to be at WWE "SummerSlam". There is no confirmation that they will be on the "SummerSlam" card, but it’s likely as they are being brought in. This new report could be a sign that WWE is planning to have Edge and Beth build to an angle or match at "SummerSlam", which could end up being a match against Balor or Priest tagging with Rhea Ripley, but that has not been confirmed. Ripley has been out of action since mid-June with a brain injury, and there’s no word on if she’s ready to return, or if WWE might introduce a new female to The Judgment Day. Edge last teamed with his wife at WWE's "Royal Rumble" back in January where they defeated The Miz & Maryse. That was Beth’s first match since the 2020 Royal Rumble Match, and her first tag team match since "WrestleMania 35" in 2019. It was previously reported that WWE has plans to bring Edge back as a babyface. As we’ve noted, WWE began airing new mystery teaser vignettes during the recent "Money In the Bank" event, and it’s been reported that these promos are for Edge’s return.
WWE was the epicenter of a 10.0 earthquake on the Richter scale in the world of professional wrestling. The most influential promoter and arguably the greatest wrestling promoter in the history of this business is no longer in charge of WWE, no longer in Gorilla yelling instructions, and no longer heading up the creative at WWE. During his 40-year tenure as owner of WWE, the man we know as Mr. McMahon has been a friend, mentor, and father-figure to many of those who he worked with and much to no surprise, several of those who worked for him used social media to simply say thank you. Here are some of the comments compiled from Twitter: Ric Flair: “You’ve made my life better every day since I’ve been in the wrestling business. You’re the only promoter in my career that treated me like a man, respected who I was, and made me a better person. God bless you for all you’ve done. FYI – no one can follow your act.” Pat McAfee: “Thank you 4 the decades of dedication to entertainment. Thank you 4 the miles you traveled. Thank you 4 the sacrifices. Thank you 4 the priceless business advice. Thank you 4 the opportunity to be a WWE SUPERSTAR @VinceMcMahon. You’re not perfect..but you’re forever a legend” Eric Bischoff: “Loved competing against you, and will always respect the business you built.” Vickie Guerrero: “It is hard to believe that Vince McMahon has retired. Thank you Vince for loving my family! I learned so much from you not only professionally but in life’s lessons. Enjoy your well deserved retirement” Titus O’Neil: “THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!!” Alberto El Patron: “Today is a sad day in the sports entertainment and wrestling industry. @VinceMcMahon retired from @WWE at 77 years. Sir, thank you for believing in me and granting me the opportunity to change my life. Without you there wouldn’t be an Albert Del Río. Enjoy life! You deserve it.” Kevin Nash: “Thank you @VinceMcMahon with out you believing in me and giving me the opportunity of a lifetime I would not be who or where I currently am. Love you boss” Michelle McCool: “Thank you @VinceMcMahon for everything you’ve done….we love you!” Brie Bella: “Thank you Vince!! You took a chance on the Bella Twins and I’ll forever be grateful for that!! Enjoy retirement – Brie” JBL: “You changed the entire entertainment world and how we view that entertainment. From Iraq, to Afghanistan, to the first group to visit the Twin Towers and all the charity work you have funded/supported-you also changed the world for the better. Thank you for everything! #legend” Mick Foley: “Thank you for everything, Vince. You changed my life.” Matt Cardona: “Thank you Vince” Gerald Brisco: “Disappointed to see all you jabronis celebrating the retirement of the man who created a world that gave you so much enjoyment growing up. If Vince never existed, all you marks would have sadder lives than you already do.” Kurt Angle: “After winning a gold medal in 1996, I found my 2nd calling because of @VinceMcMahon … thank you for believing in me and giving me the opportunity of a lifetime. I Love you Vince. P.S. I’m still Vince’s favorite @steveaustinBSR” Road Dogg: “Thank you sir. For all I have, for your guidance and dare I say friendship (at times) lol” Saraya (Paige): “Thank you for everything Vince! You’ve been nothing but nice to me and I appreciate everything you’ve done for wrestling” Matt Hardy: “Thank you. VKM!” Dana Brooke: “Thank you @VinceMcMahon ! Nothing but appreciation & respect! You have always believed in me and have seen my vision! I appreciate our conversations & words of wisdom! You will be missed!” The Blue Meanie: “Love Vince or hate Vince. Vince took the industry to levels others had tried to and failed. Vince McMahon and WWE allowed me an opportunity to support my family. I’m forever grateful.” William Regal: “Thank you very much Boss. 21 years of a great job traveling the world and without your help I wouldn’t of lived to see a second of it. x”
Matches added to the WWE YouTube channel this week include Chavo Guerrero, Jr. vs. Rey Mysterio from "SummerSlam 2007" and AJ Styles & Omos vs. RK-Bro (Randy Orton & Riddle) for the RAW Tag Team Titles from "SummerSlam 2021".
Bill Goldberg spoke for the first time about defeating Bray Wyatt for the WWE Universal title at the "Super ShowDown" event in Saudi Arabia two years ago. In an interview with CBS Sports’ Shakiel Mahjour for "SHAK Wrestling", Goldberg rejected the suggestions that he went in and asked to win the title. Goldberg left to go to Saudi knowing he was going to lose the match but then, over the next hours, the decision was made to change the finish. “It surely wasn’t me because it’s an extremely selfish move to do,” Goldberg said. “Vince gave me opportunities that maybe I didn’t deserve in the past. I owe that man just about everything.” Goldberg said that that he never refused to put anyone over, except maybe once in WCW when he didn’t agree to lose to Chris Jericho in a comedy match. “But not in a million years in that Fiend situation in Saudi would I have done that. No way in hell. I’d love to see him face-to-face and make sure there is not one percent of his being that believes that I changed that match,” Goldberg continued.
Bill Goldberg recently joined Bleacher Report for an in-depth conversation about all things pro-wrestling, which includes the former two-time WWE Universal Champion talking about top AEW talent Wardlow, and how fans compare the two. Highlights from the interview can be found below. Says he understands why Wardlow gets compared to him: “I understand the comparisons. I’ve heard of him for sure. I’ve seen pictures of him. I haven’t seen him work that much. But, hey, man, more power to him. There needs to be more characters like that. There needs to be serious intensity out there. There’s people that slice meat and there’s people that eat meat and he needs to be eating meat — now Big E is going to come into it.” Considers it an honor that Wardlow is being compared to him: “But yeah, man , I don’t know. I’ve never read anything about a comparison from him and how he passes judgment on it. But at the end of the day, anybody that’s close to the top in their prospective business to be compared with myself. That’s an honor and a privilege.”
Bill Goldberg recently joined NFL Network’s "Good Morning Football" to hype up WWE’s "SummerSlam" premium live event, where the former world champion chooses who he thinks will win the headlining matchup between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar. Check out Goldberg’s full thoughts on the subject in the highlights below. Picks Lesnar to win against Reigns at SummerSlam: “Put me on the spot, right? You know, I gotta go Big Boy. I gotta go Brock. You never know what’s going to happen when Brock gets in the ring with anybody, let alone Roman. We’ve seen it a couple of times. But no matter how many times you’ve seen those two go at it, there’s always going to be something new, always going to be something exciting.” Wants Lesnar to choke Reigns out at SummerSlam: “What I like about Brock is, he’s like me. You never know when he’s going to explode or not. So even though Roman’s the D-linemen, you know, he went to Georgia Tech and we have the close proximity going to school together. He choked me out last time I was in the ring. I have to get redemption from that, and I hope and pray that Brock chokes him unconscious.”
Former WWE writer Phil Blechman is putting together a musical called "The Last Match: A Pro Wrestling Rock Musical." He said that Tito Santana, Tommy Fiero, Brutus Beefcake, and Demolition (Ax & Smash) are part of the production team.
Jesse Ventura recently joined "Talk Is Jericho" for an in-depth conversation about all things pro-wrestling, including who Ventura’s favorite person was to wrestle. Highlights from the interview are below. Names Tito Santana as his favorite person to wrestle: “Without naming a single match, I’ll simply say Tito Santana was the most favorite person I enjoyed wrestling out of anyone in the business. I don’t know if you know this, but Tito has written a book … He gave me a copy, and the reason I’m so touched by the book and him, is because the title of his book is Don’t Call Me Chico.” Explains the origin of the Chico phrase: “At that time I had switched to the broadcasting, so I wasn’t seeing the boys except at television tapings. The wrestlers, they didn’t see TV cause they’re on the road. They’re either traveling or wrestling. Tito is showing up to all these venues and the fans are calling him ‘Chico.’ It even got to the point that they’re holding signs that say ‘Chico.’ Now Merced [Santana’s real name] is caught, because he’s a babyface, and he’s trying to figure this out, so he goes over and it first happens at an airport … They’re all yelling ‘Chico,’ and they all come running over. Merced goes, ‘Well, you guys know my name’s Tito.’ And they go, ‘Oh, yeah we know that.’ ‘Well then, why are you calling me ‘Chico?” They wouldn’t tell him.” On the incident and how Tito addressed it in his book: “Tito comes to me at TV, and we both laugh like hell over it. In his book, he took an entire paragraph: I want you people to know, there is not one racist bone in Jesse Ventura’s body. He said Jesse Ventura was so over as a heel he would make you money by being derogatory towards you. He said ‘The more he insulted me, the better it was for me.’ He finished it by saying ‘Jesse Ventura was a total credit towards the wrestling business.’ He said, ‘Jesse Ventura made me a ton of money,’ and he said, ‘and he was great at doing it.’ Chris, I laid in bed at that hotel, and it brought tears to my eyes, because no one in the wrestling business has said that about me.”
Ric Flair is set to wrestle a tag team bout for his final match to be held at the “Jim Crockett Promotions Presents: Ric Flair’s Last Match” event during Starrcast V weekend. The second episode of the “Ric Flair’s Last Match” docuseries was released on Monday, and it includes a bloody beatdown angle where Jeff Jarrett, Jay Lethal, and Karen Angle took Flair out as David Crockett looked on. Flair then appeared with his son-in-law, Andrade el Idolo, and the tag team match is on. The third episode of the docuseries will be released next week with the contract signing and more. The match will be Flair & el Idolo vs. Jarrett and Lethal. Karen will accompany Jeff and Lethal to the ring. Flair has been training with Lethal for months, and Jarrett was involved in his recent press conference, and has been working with Flair’s other son-in-law, "Starrcast" promoter Conrad Thompson. It was revealed that Flair is suffering from a foot injury. However, word is that the injury will not impact his match later this month. The “Jim Crockett Promotions Presents: Ric Flair’s Last Match” event will take place on Sunday, July 31st from the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN, during "Starrcast V" weekend. The three-hour event will air live on FITE TV and various bundles are offered for the events of the weekend.
The official announcement was made of Ric Flair & Andrade el Idolo vs. Jeff Jarrett & Jay Lethal for the Ric Flair's final match show on July 31st in Nashville, TN. Notable is that Tony Khan is allowing el Idolo to do the show and WWE is allowing a Senior Vice President (Jarrett) to do the show working against someone from the other company. It was also noted about how Jarrett being the referee in the Usos-Street Profits match the night before at "SummerSlam" since the Jarretts have been on local television in Nashville and lived in the area dating back to the 60s, but that Jarrett would be working two shows that weekend and not just "SummerSlam".
Ric Flair is dealing with plantar fasciitis in the bottom of his foot, but he doesn’t seem worried about it heading into the last match of his career on July 31st. He was a guest on "Busted Open Radio" on Tuesday morning with Dave LeGreca and Bully Ray to discuss his last match on July 31st. Flair is scheduled to team with his son-in-law, Andrade el Idolo to take on Jeff Jarrett & Jay Lethal. When asked about his foot injury heading into this match, Flair revealed that he’s dealing with plantar fasciitis. “I’ve got plantar fasciitis in the bottom of my foot,” Flair revealed. “Other than that, I’m perfect, but that damn thing is sore as shit. I’m at the doctor’s right now.” When Bully Ray asked if he thought this injury would affect him in his last match, Flair said that it won’t, although it’s hard for him to run the ropes right now. “No, shoot, I would just deaden it if I had to. You know me,” Ric Flair said. “But it affects me daily. It’s hard running the ropes with that damn center of your foot. For some reason, everybody knows that the middle of your foot is so damn sensitive. I mean for anything, right? So much less my body weight, but no, I’ve been training hard and doing two-a-days training with Rob. I think he was on the episode; as you guys saw last night, he’s John Cena’s guy. In the morning, I’ve landed the lakes, and I drive over, and I was training with Jay, and now I’m training with other guys right here in town. So I do two-a-days, then take a day off, two-a-days, and take a day off.” Conrad Thompson was also on "Busted Open Radio" last week and confirmed that Flair isn’t worried about the issue with his foot and that he’s ready to compete on July 31st. “He’s in good spirits you know,” Thompson began. “He’s a little out of sorts that he’s not training with Jay Lethal; obviously, that was a big part of him getting ready, and he’s found another ring, and he feels good about it. He feels like he’s got his conditioning and up and down and quickness and movements and all that. Now it’s just a matter of getting down to Nashville, but I know there’s been some reports that he’s injured and he’s hurting and all that but the reality is, he’s still gonna be there. He’s got some sort of little foot thing going on, but he’s not worried about it, and it’s gonna be a big day, man. It’s gonna happen one way or another. Ric Flair’s gonna walk that aisle one last time.” Ric Flair’s Last Match will air on FITE.
The legendary Ric Flair was a recent guest on "Busted Open Radio" to hype up his Last Match, and discuss a number of different topics including how happy he is to have been added back into WWE’s signature intro. Check out the Nature Boy’s full thoughts on the subject in the highlights below. Says he personally thanked Vince McMahon for putting him back into WWE intro: “I went and saw Vince yesterday [Monday] to personally thank him because they were in Tampa. It made me feel like my world had changed again. It made me feel a lot better than when they took me off.” How everything McMahon has said to him has come true: “Everything Vince McMahon has ever said to me has come true and he said, ‘I promise you I’ll put you back on it,’ and he did. I went over there and thanked him.”
Steve Austin returned at WrestleMania this year for his final match. Now, one of Steve Austin’s fellow WWE Hall of Famers will also wrestle one last time. On July 31st, “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair will lace up his boots one more time in Nashville, TN. Flair will team up with his new son-in-law Andrade el Idolo to square off with Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal. Speaking with Sportskeeda Wrestling, Steve Austin expressed his support for Flair’s last match. He made it clear that he wishes the legend nothing but the best. “Well, it’s gonna be his final match, so I guess he’s in the mood to have one more go and to prove he was the man,” Austin explained. “I’ve said before, I think he was the greatest traveling world champion that there ever was. There’s a reason he had the belt as many times as he did, because he was that damn good. He lived the lifestyle on the road to the nth degree, let’s say. For him to have his final match, I wish him nothing but the best. I hold him in the highest regard and have the highest respect for him,” he continued. “I’m behind everything he does in the ring. So, I look forward to seeing it. I wish I could be there in person. Again, I’m not traveling anywhere right now, but I wish him all the best and I know it’s gonna turn out great and I can’t wait to watch it.” "Ric Flair’s Last Match" will air on Sunday, July 31st on FITE TV, live from "Starrcast" in Nashville, TN.
Mick Foley recently revealed that Vince McMahon told him to end his career after informing the boss about his apparent memory loss. The first episode of "Foley is Pod" revolved around Foley's run during the tail end of the Attitude Era. Foley recalled a match where he teamed up with Al Snow to face Crash Holly & Hardcore Holly on "SmackDown" in 1999. Foley experienced a few forgettable moments during the match and decided to speak to Vince McMahon backstage after the bout. Mick Foley was candid with Vince McMahon and said he couldn't even remember where he lived due to the innumerable bumps he'd taken over the years. Foley wanted to retire, and as expected, Vince McMahon, too, was concerned about his talent's well-being. "I talked to Vince; I was so embarrassed that night," revealed Foley. "I said, 'Vince, I think I've got to hang up the boots.' (...) I said, 'Vince, I can't remember where I live anymore.' He was like, 'What's that?' I said, 'I drive past my house, and I can't remember things, and he said, 'You've just had your last match.'" Despite his desire to hang up his wrestling boots, Mick Foley continued to wrestle for WWE for a few more months. He was involved in an epic storyline with Triple H before taking a break from in-ring action in 2000. McMahon has a reputation for being a rather unforgiving wrestling promoter. Foley said that while there are "elements" to the notion, he stressed that Vince McMahon has always prioritized a wrestler's health. Foley stated that McMahon wasn't just focused on making more money for WWE. McMahon also ensured that "his guys" were safe, as Foley briefly explained below: "When people talk about Vince being selfish and grinding people too hard, I counter with, 'okay, maybe there are elements to that,'" Foley continued. "But when push came to shove, and he heard one of his guys was having trouble with memory, it was more important to him that I be healthy than I continue to make money for the company."
The NWA has announced a major change to their "NWA 74" pay-per-view event. During an appearance on "Busted Open Radio", NWA President William Patrick Corgan announced that Nick Aldis has been pulled from the main event of "NWA 74 - Night 1". In his place, Tyrus will challenge Trevor Murdoch for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. Aldis won the finals of the Race to the Chase Tournament on the July 19th episode of "NWA Powerrr" to earn the title shot, but Corgan has stripped him of the opportunity. Tyrus is the reigning NWA World Television Champion. Murdoch won the NWA World Title at "NWA Alwayz Ready" after it was vacated due to Matt Cardona’s injury. He defeated Aldis, Samuel Shaw, and Thom Latimer in four-way match.
Fuego del Sol is determined to make sure things happen for him in AEW. Over the weekend on his Twitter page, he deleted his tweets, blacked out his avatar, and removed all mentions of AEW from his bio. This led to speculation online that he would be the next wrestler to depart the company, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. Fuego took to social media to cut a promo on the matter and reveal his new attitude in the process. “I delete my tweets and change my bio. And suddenly rumors and speculations swirling about what’s next for Fuego del Sol. Well, let me tell you, wrestling is all about presentation and momentum,” he began. “And a year ago, I had all the momentum in the world, and when I got my contract, I thought that meant the right people had finally recognized just how damn talented Fuego del Sol really is. I thought I’d have a new opportunity to showcase this talent, but the few hard-to-come-by TV matches I got didn’t go my way. I started to feel my momentum dying down; I start to realize commentators aren’t taking me seriously. I start to wonder are matchmakers taking me seriously? I’ve been called a lovable loser. But that is never what I aspire to be. I might make funny content to put online because it’s more productive than sitting in catering and complaining or being complacent. But to watch new guys come in and skip me in line to watch my own friends leave the company it made me realize I need to switch up the presentation. I need to change my momentum. So if you’re not taking me seriously, hell, opinions change when people do, but if you hadn’t been watching AEW Dark, you may not realize the changes I’ve been making. New look, new move set, added muscle, and a brand new attitude. But if no one else is going to tell you about it. I’ll talk my shit and tell you myself. I see the long list of guys you’re calling the future of professional wrestling that are ahead of me when they won’t outwork me, they won’t outwrestle me, and they damn sure won’t outtalk me, but I’ll throw humble Fuego out the window, and I’ll tell you my damn self. I’m pissed off for greatness. And I will refuse to wait any longer for someone to showcase this talent when I’ll do it my damn self. You want to know what’s next for me? I’ll tell you where you can find this new attitude next. Now that I have your attention, I want you to turn it to AEW Dark tomorrow night where I wrestle my old rival Q. T. Marshall because regardless of whether it’s Dynamite, Rampage, Elevation, or Dark, lucky for them, AEW is paying me to stick around a little bit longer, but I don’t think they realize the new Fuego they’re getting because this new Fuego is going to split this fire turn up the heat and take over the wrestling world even if I gotta do it all by my damn self!”
When AEW first launched back in 2019, three championships were created for the company; the AEW World Championship, AEW Women’s World Championship and AEW World Tag Team Championship. Over time, AEW has slowly started to introduce more titles to the company, with the TNT Championship, TBS Championship, all of Ring of Honor’s Championships, and most recently the AEW All-Atlantic Championship making their debuts since then. When the All-Atlantic title was revealed, it was met with a polarising reaction, with some fans believing the title to be "overkill" and that there was no need to introduce the title. AEW announcer Jim Ross recently spoke about the formation of the title on his "Grilling JR" podcast, where he admitted that he didn’t understand Tony Khan’s decision to introduce the title. He said “I didn’t understand that (creating the All-Atlantic Title), but it doesn’t matter what I understand. I’m not against it, but did we need it? I don’t know that we needed it, but I also don’t know how big of an asset it’s going to be internationally for us. I know that we’re going to go to places, like PAC is defending that title now in the U. K. I get it all the time. When are you guys coming to England? When are you going to do a pay-per-view? When are you going to do this? Well, when we come to England, you can bet your ass it’s going to be big. Tony’s got great business contacts there.” PAC became the inaugural AEW All-Atlantic Champion back at "Forbidden Door", when he defeated Miro, Clark Connors, and Malakai Black in a four-way. Since PAC captured the title, he has yet to appear on AEW television, though did retain the title against Shota Umino at a Revolution Pro Wrestling event in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, in a match that aired on this week’s episode of "AEW Dark". JR also seemed to confirm that AEW has plans to make it’s U. K. debut some time ‘in the next calendar year’. We recently put together a predicted card for the AEW U. K. show.
Shingo Takagi talked to New Japan Pro Wrestling's website about working with Sting at Forbidden Door when asked what catches his eye in AEW. “Well, I think the guys that I have wrestled before, or had near misses with. So Bryan (Danielson) (Samoa) Joe, Claudio (Castagnoli), PAC. But then Sting… Sting just entirely carried that match we had (laughs). From the entrance on, it was all Sting. That’s a legend for you. He was a real model for me going forward, that’s the kind of wrestler I need to be.”
