After further investigation, Yamato changed his story to say that his wife Hanoki accidentally shot him during a pistol scuffle while in a domestic dispute. His conditioned worsened and he died in the hospital. Hanoki did not face any charges after his death. When Hanoki went to the hospital to claim the body and sign the death certificate, it was revealed that her husband had petitioned and was granted a divorce in October of 1960 which meant she was no longer next of kin.
