-Believed that Vince McMahon, Jr. was only using him to lure his father out of retirement. He quit the WWF several times, only to be lured back by his dad. He was finally fired by the WWF after punching a fan who spit on him.
-In one of his final WWF appearances, Sammartino was involved in a confusing and controversial finish at the Philadelphia Spectrum on November 22, 1985, quickly submitting to a bear hug by preliminary wrestler Ron Shaw in a match Sammartino is believed to have been booked to win. The alleged changing of the finish by Sammartino (Shaw and the referee apparently were caught by surprise) has caused this to be known as the "Phantom Submission Match."
-Was supposed to be revealed as the man under the mask of the Unknown Soldier in the AWA in 1989, leading to a feud with then-AWA World Champion Larry Zbyszko. This might have led to a run as AWA World Champion, but Sammartino no-showed that event.
-Voted PWI Rookie of the Year in 1981.
