NEWS
On a recent episode of his podcast, Bruce Prichard says Vince McMahon and Jim Cornette thought Triple H was not that great. He said “I do remember Corny and Vince McMahon saying that Triple H would be a midcard guy at best early on in his (pro wrestling) career and Russo was a huge proponent of Triple H. And I dare say that without Russo at the helm at the time, Hunter probably would not have gotten the breaks that he got at the time. Yeah, (Russo was Triple H’s biggest advocate at the time) and then Vince McMahon became, but Hunter was one of those guys who was always around, always asking questions, and wanting to be a part of whatever he could do to learn. I liked Hunter because I always liked his attitude, just willing to do whatever it took to learn the (pro wrestling) business, but Russo was definitely pushing Hunter and had an awful lot of ideas for him.”

A. J. Styles won another shot at the WWE United States Title after he won an Independence Day Battle Royal on "SmackDown Live" on Tuesday. The former WWE champion pulled double duty on SmackDown. First he had to go through Chad Gable to secure his spot in the battle royal match. Styles ended up with Sami Zayn and Tye Dillinger as the final three, with Zayn eliminating Dillinger and then Styles eliminating Zayn with a Pele kick. The feud between Owens and Styles have been going on for a few months now. While it does not happen very often, during WWE’s return to Madison Square Garden in New York City, the company pulled the trigger on a title change as Styles defeated Owens in a non-televised live event. Styles won a title rematch for the United States Title by winning the Independence Day battle royal on Smackdown earlier this week, guaranteeing a shot at Kevin Owens’ title at the upcoming "Battleground" pay-per-view. But for whatever reason, WWE decided to make the title switch early, giving the fans at MSG a nice surprise. Styles won the title after delivering the Phenomenal Forearm half-way across the ring and then pinning Owens immediately. Earlier in the match, Owens survived the Styles Clash. The title win can be seen by clicking here. There is also a backstage video of Styles talking about his title win that you can watch by clicking here.

Matt Hardy posted a congratulatory message to A. J. Styles on his WWE United States Title win that said "What a DELIGHTFUL Title change at @TheGarden. Definitely #BestForBusiness." Dixie Carter posted a reply that said "I agree @MATTHARDYBRAND. Congrats @AJStylesOrg".

A. J. Styles has been added to Wizard World Comic Con Columbus, which kicks off on August 4th and ends on August 6th. Styles will be attending the event on Friday, August 4 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center and will pose for photo ops, sign autographs and conduct a Q&A panel between 5pm and 8pm. Prices for an autograph are $50 each while a photo op will cost $55. VIP packages will be announced by Wizard World soon. An entry ticket is also required. A one-day ticket is $39.95 for the day Styles will be there. For more information go to WizardWorld.com/ComicCon/Columbus.

Since GFW and TNA/Impact Wrestling are one company, it was just a matter of time before the GFW television taping from last year, entitled "Amped" would see the light of day. It was announced last week that "Amped Anthology" will air as a 4-part tournament style "One Night Only" pay-per-view series starting on August 11th. In "Part I" you will see international stars in action like Sanada, P. J. Black, Nick Aldis, Kushida, The Bollywood Boyz (Girv Sihra & Harv Sihra), and Sonjay Dutt. Other superstars on the first card include Mickie James, Bobby Roode, Brian Myers, and Chris Mordetzky. Calling the action is Bellator MMA fighter Chael Sonnen and international ring announcer Cyrus Fees.

Gail Kim appeared during the GFW “Impact Wrestling” television tapings and announced that this would be her last year wrestling, stating that she would be returning soon and would end her career on top. Kim has been wrestling since 2000, spending the vast majority of her career wrestling for WWE and Impact, winning the WWE Women's Title once and the Impact Knockouts Title six times.

It was announced at the GFW “Impact Wrestling” tapings that the Super X Cup would be making a return after a 12-year absence. The 8-Man single elimination tournament that will pit wrestlers from various promotions and countries against one another, with the winner most likely becoming the number one contender for the X Division Title. The eight participants in the returning Super X Cup are: Sammy Guevara (World Wrestling Network/Texas independent scene), Drago (Asistencia Asesoría y Administración/Lucha Underground), ACH (EVOLVE, and formerly of Ring of Honor), Andrew Everett (GFW), Taiji Ishimori (Pro Wrestling NOAH), Davey Richards (GFW), Dezmond Xavier (GFW), and Idris Abraham (GFW).

Jim Ross was given a paper with the pictures of the New Japan Pro Wrestling wrestlers and their names printed underneath after making several mistakes on night one of NJPW's G1 USA special.

Tama Tonga criticized Jim Ross and Josh Barnett's commentary from New Japan Pro Wrestling's G1 Specials. He said "Commentating sucked at the #G1Special..at least @realkevinkelly knows the storylines and OUR F#CKING NAMES". That was followed by Kenny Omega tweeting that he can't wait to hear Kevin Kelly and Don Callis on NJPW again and saying that he appreciates their unbiased opinions.

Roddy Piper’s widow, operating as The Kitty J. Toombs Trust, has filed for trademarks on the following items: Roddy Piper, Rowdy Roddy Piper, and Piper. The application states the marks would be for wrestling, merchandise, and action figure purposes. WWE has yet to file opposition to the marks but it would be surprising if they didn’t.
