The Scoop

NEWS
Region 8 News in Arkansas is reporting that WWE World Champion A. J. Styles was robbed and Arkansas State University police are still investigating the case. The theft occurred last Monday night while Styles was performing at a WWE show at the ASU Convocation Center in Jonesboro, AR. Styles reported the theft of a black bag containing $1,000 in American currency, $7,000 in Japanese yen, iPhone, a set of Beats headphones, a small screen TV, an Xbox 360, and six Xbox 360 games. Region 8 News has requested more information to be released in the case, but Arkansas State University has denied their request.

As seen on "WWE SmackDown Live" on Tuesday, La Luchadora was revealed as Mickie James after Becky Lynch ripped off her mask during the WWE SmackDown Ladies Title Steel Cage match between Alexa Bliss and Lynch. While the feud between James and Lynch is imminent, WWE SmackDown officials don’t have long-term plans for their rivalry. It is being said that James’ feud with Lynch will take place over the next couple of months, however they will not have a blow-off match at WrestleMania as expected.

Mickie James was unveiled as La Luchadora last Tuesday night on SmackDown, marking her first time appearing on the main roster since 2010. James, as La Luchadora, helped Alexa Bliss retain the SmackDown Women's Title in a Steel Cage Match against Becky Lynch. While the La Luchadora character has been appearing on WWE television over the past few weeks, it was the first time that James was under the mask and costume. James was offered a new full-time deal with WWE following her match with Asuka at "NXT Takeover: Toronto" in November and she accepted the deal. The former 5-time WWE Women's Champion wrestled in TNA after she departed WWE but wrapped up her TNA duties in 2015. SmackDown's women roster was in need of some additional help considering the roster is a bit weaker compared to the one on RAW.

Mickie James will be doing an interview on SmackDown explaining her reasons for being La Luchadora.

The WWE produced Jimmy Snuka tribute video on RAW drew mixed criticism from the internet wrestling community, some praising it, and some coming down hard on WWE for making a tribute to an alleged murderer. The murder charges against Snuka, which were dropped earlier this month after he was deemed unfit to stand trial, pretty much dominated Snuka’s final year and a half on his life. When Snuka was charged, he was also removed from the WWE Hall of Fame website as WWE distanced itself from him and the case. Snuka was arraigned on November 2, 2015 in Lehigh County Court in Pennsylvania for the killing of his mistress Nancy Argentino, a case from 1983 which went cold until it was re-opened by the District Attorney following an investigative report in the Morning Call newspaper. The 72-year-old former professional wrestler was charged two months earlier with third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter after a grand jury determined he repeatedly assaulted Argentino in the former George Washington Motor Lodge in Whitehall Township, PA then left her in bed to die. While all charges against Snuka were dropped due to his severe battle with dementia and another losing battle with stomach cancer, WWE officials were left in a tricky situation where they were going to get criticized if they showed or not showed some kind of tribute on RAW. WWE went all out instead, first showing the “in memoriam” graphic at the beginning of the show, then Michael Cole going over the story, followed by a tribute video and screenshots from Twitter of past and present WWE Superstars paying tribute to Snuka. Snuka’s daughter Tamina works for WWE, which makes it even more of a weird situation. There are even many rumors of Vince McMahon knowing about the alleged murder and allegedly paying off someone when Snuka was questioned back then. Snuka was one of McMahon’s biggest stars in the early 80s. In his biography, Snuka wrote that he remembers McMahon and himself meeting with District Attorney William Platt, Assistant District Attorney Robert Steinberg, forensic pathologist Isidore Mihalakis, Whitehall Police Detectives Gerry Procanyn, Al Fritzinger and Vincent Geiger in the DA's office law library. There's no official record of what was said. "All I remember is [McMahon] had a briefcase with him," Snuka wrote. “I don't know what happened. The only thing I know for sure is I didn't hurt Nancy." This is not the first time that WWE got blasted for airing a video tribute for one of their wrestlers. When Chris Benoit died, the company canceled RAW and dedicated the whole show to him replaying some of his best matches. Just a few hours later it emerged that Benoit killed his family before committing suicide, with some still arguing that WWE knew what went down before Raw but still decided to go ahead with the tribute.

Despite receiving criticism about honoring Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka on Monday Night Raw, WWE went ahead and added a Snuka WWE Network Collection which debuted last night. An e-mail sent to all WWE Network subscribers with the subject ‘Celebrate the Life of Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka,’ WWE described Snuka as the pioneer of high-flying offense who took the industry to new heights. “From a legendary leap off a steel cage at Madison Square Garden, to unforgettable rivalries with Rowdy Roddy Piper and “Cowboy” Bob Orton, enjoy Snuka’s most memorable moments and see how this WWE Hall of Famer influenced a generation of future WWE Superstars,” the description reads. Meanwhile, Snuka is still missing from the Hall of Fame WWE page just like Hulk Hogan.

Tamina posted an update on Instagram regarding funeral plans for her father, Jimmy Snuka. She said "Thank you everyone for your outpouring of love and support during this time. As his children we wanted to share there will be NO Formal Funeral Services arranged by myself or our family at this time. Instead we will be looking for a future date to appropriately celebrate his LIFE and LEGACY in a style that would make him proud. Thank you and much love and gratitude to all of you from his children."

Jerry “The King” Lawler has not done any commentary for WWE television since mid-2016 but that will all change come the "Royal Rumble". It was announced last week on "Talking Smack" that the WWE Hall of Famer will be back in the commentary booth to call the 30-man over-the-top rope Royal Rumble Match along with Michael Cole and Corey Graves, leaving no SmackDown announcer calling the action. The regular commentary teams will be doing their own matches on the show and the change will only be done for the Royal Rumble Match. Jerry Lawler returned on SmackDown last Tuesday to host a special edition of "The King’s Court" with Dolph Ziggler. That did not turn out well for The King who got super kicked in the chest by Ziggler. Lawler has been off WWE television for the past few months after he was removed from the pay-per-view kickoff panel shows along with Lita.

Renee Young, Jerry Lawler, Booker T, and Shawn Michaels will be doing the Royal Rumble pre-show panel that starts at 5pm Eastern time.

Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre announced that Raymond Rowe will be appearing for them the same weekend that he’ll be wrestling for Lucha Memes. Lucha Memes promoter Daniel Ledesma confirmed that Raymond Rowe would be wrestling for CMLL on the Friday January 27th show.
