Old Friends Now Perpetual Nemeses In Cruiserweight Battle

Old Friends Now Perpetual Nemeses In Cruiserweight Battle

Posted: Sep 17th 2010 By: CMBurnham

When friendships end, the fallout can be excruciating. Just ask Rage Logan. For a long time in SWCW, he and SWCW Cruiserweight Champion Damien Morte were best friends and core members of the group called Nemesis. But as that group crumbled apart from the inside earlier this year, Logan and Morte ended up on opposite sides with the Cruiserweight Title as the goal for both men.

This year has seen a couple of major confrontations between Logan and Morte. The first, on April 25, saw Logan emerge victorious. But that was prior to Morte defeating Crisstopher Crow (another former Nemesis alum) for the Cruiserweight Title. On July 24, Morte defeated Logan in a 2-out-of-3 Falls Match to retain the title. On August 22, Morte once again put Logan's shoulders to the mat for a 3 count, although he needed his feet on the ropes to make that pin.

This past Sunday, Morte found himself in the opening match against Kevin James Sanchez. Sanchez is a former Heavyweight Champion, but has been competing primarily in tag team matches with Bobby Star as X-Rated and has lost some of the step needed for a one-on-one match. Consequently, Morte dominated a lot of the match and was setting Sanchez up for a swanton bomb when Logan strode down the walkway, carrying a legal envelope. He made his way around to the ring annouce table and handed that envelope to SWCW Commissioner Shawn McKeaigg. While Morte watched Logan's travel, this allowed Sanchez to recover and meet Morte with a superkick for the win.

After the match, McKeaigg announced to the crowd that Morte had an open contract to defend his Cruiserweight Title at "Thirst For Gold" on October 2nd. Logan signed that contract and the match was officially made into a Ladder Match. Logan & Morte, who were also the first in the state to participate in an Ultimate X Match, now find themselves back in what seems to be their most comfortable environment, with the Cruiserweight Title hanging high above the ring.

But the surprises weren't over the for the night as Logan found himself facing the man who drove a spike into the carcass of Nemesis, Damon Windsor. The last time Windsor had been in SWCW, he had defeated Morte and Nemesis was disbanded as a result. This time, Windsor found himself opposite the man who created Nemesis. Logan fought the good fight, using speed and agility to counter Windor's height advantage. And as the match seemed to move to a close, Logan had Windsor pinned until Morte arrived and pulled Logan off the pin from outside. After dragging Logan out of the ring, he delivered a quick beating (unknown to referee George Knight, who was checking on Windsor's condition). Morte then rolled Logan back in and Windsor took the pin. Fans sat in wonder as it seemed the men who had put on one of the best matches in SWCW history had now bonded over their dislike of Rage Logan. But that bond wasn't as strong as it initially seemed. Morte tried to talk himself up to Windsor, but Windsor seemed distrusting of "The Suicide Saint". They finally bumped fists and Morte turned towards the ring announced table only to come face-to-face with Logan. At that moment, Morte realised he was trapped between the two men and perhaps things were not going to go in his favour. Logan faked a punch, Morte turned away from it and Windsor picked Morte up in a chokeslam which Logan turned into a Backstabber. As Morte lay fallen in the ring, Windsor & Logan stood triumphant, celebrating with the people.

Despite the alliance with Windsor, it's quite likely that Logan will be entering the Ladder match on October 2nd alone. Recent history seems to suggest that Morte will also be alone on this night, as the Saints of the Damned do not seem to be on the same page. Both Morte and Logan will put everything they have on the line in this match. The winner will not only be the cruiserweight champion, but might also be known as the man who took death-defying moves in Oklahoma independent wrestling to an entirely different level.
