Having Your Cake Pt 1: Mike Iles

Having Your Cake Pt 1: Mike Iles

Posted: Jun 11th 2010 By: CMBurnham

In professional wrestling, celebrations always seem to go wrong. Anytime there is something like an anniversary or a major title win, when the involved people try to acknowledge it, it just never seems to work out.

Excellence Personified had much to celebrate. Last month, Dustin Heritage won the MWA-MAX Division Title and the TAP Tag Team Title with Se7en. Also, Jack Legacy won the MWA Championship. And on Wednesday, Michael Barry added the BYEW Title to EP's accomplishments. With so much gold falling into EP's hands, it seemed only appropriate that a party be held and that party occurred at the MWA show on Friday.

Mike Iles and Jack Legacy came out and Iles had the chance to address the crowd for the first time since he cost Jeff Starchild the MWA Title. He said that he had been receiving e-mails all week asking him why he turned his back on the people and joined EP. He then pointed out that it was obvious since the beginning that he was a member of EP. Jack Legacy was best man at his wedding. He'd known Michael Barry ever since they met in NWA-OK and he knew Dustin Heritage when another promoter forced him to wear a mask because that promoter was jealous of Dustin's good looks. Jeff Starchild arrived and, in a surprise move, makes no excuses for his loss. He admits he was outclassed, outsmarted and outwrestled. He said that Mike Iles alligned himself with a member of the elite and he wanted to congratulate Jack for beating him. As Jack and Iles began to cut the celebratory cake that sat at the ringside table, Starchild said that he would like to join them in having a piece of that cake and (in what was certainly a shocking moment to the crowd) he was interested in talking to Iles about joining EP. But then, as Iles was focused on cutting the cake, Starchild shoved Iles facefirst into to cake. Iles stood up and the cake mostly stayed on his face. He took one step backwards, slipped on the splattered icing and fell down, spraying more cake on his suit, his face and the ringside area. As the other EP members ran to their leader's rescue, Starchild made his way into the crowd and said that Iles might have 3 people to back him up, but he had about 150 (the attendance that night) there to support him. He vowed to prove that the fans loved him and that he was still the star of the show.

Iles emerged after intermission for Legacy's title defence against Brian Breaker with cake still smeared all over him. Despite his humiliation earlier (or perhaps because of it), Iles was focused on his job. Breaker & Legacy took the match to the outside and annihilated the table at ringside, scattering belts, water bottles and the ring bell all over the place when Breaker threw Legacy across it. When the match made its way back into the ring, Iles distracted the referee and EP made their presence known. But Breaker was prepared for this and disposed of Barry and Heritage swiftly and effectively. He then turned to get rid of Iles, but Legacy snuck up from behind and nailed him in the crotch. A simple schoolboy was all it took at that point for Legacy to retain the MWA Title.

Iles chose not to accompany EP to ringside at the ComPro event the next night. Instead, Lars Manderson filled in and while Michael Barry was able to gain a victory over Blake Albright (something he was unsuccessful at the previous night against Max McGuirk), the Jet Setters could not take the ComPro Tag Team Titles from Legion 13. So the celebration was somewhat shortlived. But Iles was not the only person to have some cake and suffer the consequences this week as you'll see in part 2 of this story tomorrow.
