Small in stature, huge in determination

Small in stature, huge in determination

Posted: Feb 12th 2010 By: mikeiles

Being the underdog is nothing new to Jason Kirby. Since the beginning of his career, he?s been outsized and often outclassed in the ring. But few wrestlers possess as much heart as he does and that determination has brought him legions of young fans as he fights the battles many of them only wish they could.

Lots of Kirby?s fans know what it?s like to be the victim of the schoolyard bully. And that best describes SWCW Cruiserweight Champion Xavior, who, for two months, has tried to make Kirby his whipping boy. The reasons remain somewhat unclear, but the outcome has always been the same. Until this past Sunday.

The problems between the two began on December 13, in the first of their most recent meetings. Kirby saw an opportunity to prove himself and Xavior looked at Kirby like just another victim. In the end, Xavior won the contest. And it just made Kirby more determined.

One month later, a rematch. And again, Kirby tried to put up the valiant fight in hopes of pulling out the win. But the ruthlessness of Xavior shown through and he forced Kirby to submit to a sitting octopus, pulling his record to 2-0 against Kirby.

Despite losing those 2 matches, Kirby was still getting a lot of attention. Attention that Xavior coveted. And things went another step on January 24 when Milton Winkelman called him out for an interview. But it wasn?t Kirby who stormed to the ring. It was Xavior and he wasn?t happy. Xavior told the fans that they needed to respect him, while they all voiced their desire to see Kirby. Xavior said that there was no one more overrated than Kirby and he didn?t care if he had to go through Kirby or anyone else in the locker room, he was going to get noticed. Milton took that opportunity to ask Xavior what his thoughts on Kirby were and Xavior said that Kirby was a nobody like all the fans, someone who just didn?t matter. These caustic comments finally brought Kirby to the ring where he told all the fans assembled that they were great. Xavior said that the fans really came to see him and that didn?t seem to ring true, based on the reaction the fans gave Xavior afterwards. Kirby acknowledged that he had lost to Xavior two times, but believed that the third time was the charm. Xavior seemed reluctant to compete against the diminutive superstar again, but then paintbrushed him unexpectedly, delivered a thunderous brainbuster and threw him from the ring, leading Milton to call for the bell and the match was on. Xavior was almost tunnelvision-like in his aggression and he even seemed to have referee Bill Decker intimidated, as he delivered a low blow to Kirby in full view of Decker, but the referee did nothing. Again, the end was the same as before, with Xavior delivering a thunderous Tiger Bomb for the win. Kirby had been beaten, but struggled to his feet to show that he had not been put out. Xavior went back in and delivered a series of chops to Kirby?s chest, then hit another hard power bomb, leaving Kirby in a crumpled mass in the ring before he was helped out by security.

The fans probably secretly hoped that Kirby would stay home on February 7, but their prayers weren?t answered. At least not the way they expected. Again, Xavior stormed to the ring and complained to Milton Winkelman about how Kirby once again had an interview scheduled, but he couldn?t even get a match! More insults towards the fans followed, culminating with Xavior referring to them as the ?Scum of the Earth?. Kirby once again arrived to defend his legion of faithful following and Kirby tried to keep him out of the ring, but Kirby would have none of it. He dove in the ring, but was not prepared to meet the physical pummeling that he received. But this time, Kirby wasn?t alone as Jesse White hit the ring and said that if Xavior wanted a match, he?d be happy to give him one. The bell rang and the match was one. Despite only having four matches under his belt, White took things straight to the ring-bully, who didn?t seem concerned that he was facing a second-generation star. White concentrated on body-blows and relied on his football background and power to match the speed and deviousness of his opponent, but he couldn?t prepare for the low blow that Xavior delivered. This time, it wasn?t in front of Bill Decker, but rather Donny Brooks, who had no problem seeing it and signaling for the DQ. But the beating wasn?t over as Jesse White locked Xavior in a submission hold after the bell rang and delivered some shots to the head, just to send a message that Xavior?s intimidation and mistreatment of Kirby would no longer be tolerated.

And in something of a consolation prize, Kirby was chosen by MSWA Oklahoma Champion Jermaine Johnson as his handpicked opponent to avoid having to face Kevin Morgan. Johnson relied on the ever-present Impact, Inc. security force to give him an advantage and, while he distracted the referee, two of them hit a devastating double-team move on Kirby. Johnson followed that up with a one-finger pin, but it wasn?t enough and Kirby kicked out. Johnson then hauled Kirby up to the top rope, preparing to give him a superplex, but when he took a moment to mouth off at the crowd, Kirby stole a move out of Big Daddy Moore?s playbook and delivered a titty-twister to Johnson, causing him to recoil off the top rope in pain. Three members of Impact, Inc. security jumped up on the ring apron, one at a time and Kirby disposed of each of them with no problem. Johnson decided he?d had enough, but as he attempted to leave with his title (which he would have retained on a countout loss), Kevin Morgan stood in the way and forcibly shoved him back in the ring. Kirby was quick to connect with a stunner and thought he had won his first championship, but it was only good enough for a 2 ? . Johnson quickly recovered and made it clear he would suffer no further humiliation, hitting The Energy Shot on Kirby and covering him for the win.

Johnson scored an exclamation point on Kirby, slamming the Oklahoma Title belt into his head before leaving the ring. But perhaps Kirby can consider it a win, since he discovered he had an unexpected ally against Xavior. More importantly, he showed he is a strong contender against anyone who doesn?t treat him with the proper respect. Kirby?s confidence seems to have been restored and if he can score a decisive victory over the SWCW Cruiserweight Champion, perhaps he can move on to gaining some gold of his own.
