Oklahoma X Title: Can Its Prestige Be Restored?

Oklahoma X Title: Can Its Prestige Be Restored?

Posted: Aug 27th 2009 By: CMBurnham

For months, the ComPro Oklahoma X Division Title has been little more than a joke.

When Goldeneye won the title on April 11, many fans were surprised. But as month after month passed, those same fans became more and more discouraged. Not because Goldeneye continued to be sucessful in title defences, but because they couldn't understand how this loser was still champion. As Goldeneye lost match after match, the prestige of the championship dropped again and again.

Pretty much everyone on the ComPro roster earned a victory over Goldeneye in the time he was champion, including ComPro Showtime Champion the Canadian Red Devil (2x), SWCW Champion Kevin Morgan, TOPW Oklahoma Champion Brandon Groom, SWCW Cruiserweight Champion Sage, Tyson Armstrong, The Canadian Luchadore, Shane Morbid, Dawn of Extreme and even Sensei Bolo, in his only in-ring appearance as a wrestler. Granted, this is not to say that Goldeneye was completely incapable of putting together wins. There were recorded victories over The Amazing Bolo, ComPro Tag Team Champion El Super Colibri, Dawn of Extreme and, most successfully, The Canadian Luchadore (3x). But most of these wins were garnered through outside interference from Boss Campbell or one of the other members of the Popped Collar Posse. On his own, Goldeneye was essentially a lost puppy who hid behind the 30-day rule for defence of his belt, desperate to cling to the minute amount of prestige he could muster in his career.

Shortly before August 22, ComPro owner Mike Two put a poll up on the message board, asking the fans who they believed deserved a shot at the X Title. The clear winner was Sage, who had beaten Goldeneye at the previous show on August 8. In second place were the Canadian Luchadore (who had defeated Sage and Crisstopher Crow in a Triple Threat match two weeks prior) and Michael York, a fellow PCP member. Mike Two announced that York would be getting a title shot, but not at the X Title. Instead, he would face the Canadian Red Devil for the Showtime title. But just as he was about to announce Goldeneye's opponent at the beginning of the show Saturday, the Canadian Luchadore arrived with Sensei Bolo and made his cae for receiving the title shot, noting his recent victories. With Boss Campbell not at ComPro that week, Luchie believed that there was no one to protect the champion and the title was his.

Mike Two again tried to announce the contender, but was interrupted this time by Sage. Sage simply put over his match the week before and said that since he beat the champion in a non-title match, he deserved a chance to win the gold. Once again, Mike Two attempted to announce the contender, but this time the champion strode from the curtain and protested the entire affair, saying it was unfair for him to have to defend his belt that night. At that point, Mike Two erupted, telling the masked man to get out of his face and saying that it was up to HIM when Goldeneye defended the belt, since it had been almost two months since a title defence. He then announced that it would be a Triple Threat Match: Goldeneye defending against both Sage and The Canadian Luchadore. Again, Goldeneye protested that it wasn't fair, so Mike amended the match, saying that in order for the title to change hands, the champion had to be pinned. Goldeneye seemed OK with that, despite Mike noting that there was no reason for the challengers to beat each other up when they could team up and beat on the champion.

The match itself was surprisingly groundbased and deliberate, although Goldeneye was the butt of several jokes at the beginning, including being tripped, schoolboy pushed and receiving a wedgie. But when the fun & games were over, all 3 men got down to business. In what some consider a shocker given his short time in the company, Sage came out the winner and elevates himself to dual-champion status. But most fans wouldn't have cared who won the match, as long as the champion didn't retain.

With the title now off Goldeneye, the Popped Collar Posse's prestige has dropped to near-nothing. Brett Taylor might be looking to fix that, as he & Michael York double teamed the Canadian Red Devil after York's loss in the Showtime Title match.

The Canadian Luchadore remains frustrated at his inability to win a singles title, but was gracious in the loss to Sage.

Sage will not have time to rest on his laurels, as he is part of a huge 6-man main event at the SWCW show this Sunday, teaming with David Kyzer and SWCW Luchadore Champion Se7en against the reformed Nemesis.
