Erik Watts Shoots On Why Samoa Joe Can't Be TNA's Goldberg

Erik Watts Shoots On Why Samoa Joe Can't Be TNA's Goldberg

Posted: Jul 31st 2009 By: CMBurnham

Get ready for the first and only internet wrestling audio show that's powered by 1.21 gigawatts. That's right. The always outspoken and controversial Erik Watts has joined ClubWWI.com to host his very own show, "MEGAWATTS." The 68 minute debut is available right now on the Club (with a full list of topics on WorldWrestlingInsanity.com) and it features all the straight talk that you've come to expect from Erik.

The debut features a ton of topics including the story of how his WCW parking lot brawl with Arn Anderson almost got him arrested for real, why he put the STF on Arn's other leg, how Diamond Dallas Page lost a major insurance policy because of wrestling confusion, the call that brought him to WCW, signing with WWE, the country music video he and Goldilocks were supposed to be in, why it didn't happen, advice to Indy stars looking to profit on unused plane tickets, Kevin Nash's "money" interview, why BG James was upset with his PPV payout, WWE forcing wrestlers to fly in for free gifts, how much WCW spent on Glacier's outfit alone, more listed below, and even tons more than that!

At the start of the new ClubWWI.com show, Erik says that he's happy to be on World Wrestling Insanity. He explains that he and James Guttman have mutual friends. After speaking for a while, Watts decided that if he was going to host an audio, he wanted to do it on the Insanity. JG feels that the show will be a positive experience because many fans feel they already know Watts, his father, and his entire family through third-hand reports. This is the chance for them to hear from him directly on a regular basis. Erik agrees.

"Yeah. I just went through that. It's amazing. I just buried my best friend (Damien Steele) yesterday. It's amazing how just on the Internet, how so many people already know when he passed and how he passed. The truth of the fact is that I've been spending time with the family and toxicology reports aren't back. Yes. We know he was laying by his front door and that he had a tough workout and that his eyes were blurry. Some assumptions would say an aneurysm. But only being 34 or 35 years old, that's tough. But that's just how news is and it's no different than wrestling. I see it all the time. I think I've said this before, to you, the most amazing thing is that people come up to me all the time and say, 'You're from Amarillo, Texas.' I'm not from Amarillo, Texas. I've never been from Amarillo, Texas."

Watts says that there's a story behind it, but it's not true. Yet, because of widely circulated information, people believe it. James and Erik go on to discuss the pitfalls of Internet reporting, why simple news gets so screwed up, how false reports can really affect a wrestler's private life, Erik's dealings with rabid "reporters," plagiarism, how people tried to attack him to get at his dad, why that was comical, what his dad told him about his detractors, the anti-Erik Watts newsletter, being a promoter's son, and more.

One subject that ClubWWI.com listeners are always eager to hear Erik's thought on is TNA. As the former Director of Authority for the promotion, he has a rich history with Total Nonstop Action. During MegaWatts, James asks him about the current state of the shows. Watts responds by asking Guttman what he thinks of Samoa Joe. JG answers that he's been going downhill in recent months. Erik follows up by asking his thoughts on Bill Goldberg. James replies that Bill wasn't all that special once the mega push was over. The host of MegaWatts then puts that all together to give some of his thoughts on the main event picture there.

"It was over 100 episodes to get us to not care about (Goldberg's push). Like me. I even sat back and thought, 'OK. Unbelievable freak coming in the ring, hurting himself, hurting other people.' And I was most happy watching Goldberg knowing that I wasn't his opponent... My point to you is, how many times are we going to do the Goldberg Push on the wrong person? Samoa Joe, I don't know him. He could be the nicest guy in the world. I might be talking about the toughest guy in the world, you know? I don't think so. I think it might be Brock Lesnar right now, because he was pretty impressive in his last fight. But my point is that those are things I can't understand. I watched TNA for a little while and this guy does not have the look to come out and kill people. And why is this guy such a killer and I think, if I'm watching Fit Finlay and I'm watching Samoa Joe, I think Fit Finlay is stiffer than he is."

Erik doesn't take any steps back from his thoughts on TNA's current state. He talks to ClubWWI.com listeners about the problems that come from using a six-sided ring, the bad decision to move to Orlando, heat with Jeff Jarrett, the Main Event Mafia, why TNA doesn't update gimmicks, forced pushes, backstage politics, ideas to improve the company, working with Goldilocks, the crazy story of Goldi's feud with his wife, the thing he said about her and Trinity that left many shaking their head, getting his hand slapped by TNA, never getting his hand slapped by Vince Russo, respect for Russo, his TNA debut, two separate entrances, sticking it out, and tons more.

One huge topic that will leave many fans happy is Erik's video library. As many fans know, the Watts family still owns the Mid-South tape library. Fans can head over to www.UniversalWrestling.com to see all the rare footage available. In fact, just recently, Shawn Michaels called Watts for some of his early footage to show his children and Erik sent it right over - including Shawn's first five matches ever on TV! E.W. says that merely talking about the footage gives him goosebumps.

"Back in the day, there was a company called Mid-South Sports and the Universal Wrestling Federation in more of your mid-south states - Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Georgia, Oklahoma. And there's just some amazing, amazing, amazing athletes that came through there?. We set up a site. It's www.UniversalWrestling.com and you can sit there and you can go through, I'm looking at it right now, Mid South has got 102 different volumes. We've got 40 volumes put on right now of Power Pro. We've got 14 volumes of Universal Wrestling Federation put up. I mean, the artists and the people who were in here all the way from Andre the Giant to, some of these have Vince McMahon. Yeah. We used to have Vince McMahon come down every once in a while and introduce an athlete and he would come down. From Junkyard Dog to Dusty Rhodes to (Jim) Duggan to (Ric) Flair to (Ted) DiBiase to all those people came through."

Erik Watts not only joins over 170 stars on ClubWWI.com including everyone from Bobby Lahsley to Sean Mooney, but also other superstars in ho sting his on audio. Other shows feature Bull Buchanan's "Bullpen," Paul Roma's "Glorious," D-Lo Brown's "Lo-Down," Orlando Jordan's "Club O.J.," and show archives from Tom Prichard and Ivory.
